Golf Clubs

Played golf for the first time in a long time this morning (thank you, Masters). My golf clubs are getting pretty old and are fairly worn, so I am considering investing in some new ones. Any recommendations?

My last set were Nike Slingshots from the first release. I plan on going to the golf shop to try a lot of them out, but I'd like a starting point.

I am sure most of it is a mental thing...we build these little scenarios in our minds that we can hit this club better than we can hit that one...but you certainly want to be comfortable with whatever you buy!

if you are going to get into it fairly seriously and plan to drop some decent coin on clubs, I would highly recommend getting a swing analysis completed. Most of the big stores should offer it. Once they look at your swing and measure your speed etc, they will make recommendations for you.

Go somewhere and get fitted... makes a big difference from what I understand. Then you can choose the brand and make you want...

I am tempted to get a new set soon as well. I would probably go with Titleist or Cleveland.

I got my slingshots fitted, and it was definitely tremendous. It added quite a bit to the price. But if I am really going to get back into playing, I don't mind spending a lot.

I haven't much kept up with Titleist irons recently, so I'll check those out. I've heard a lot of good things about Clevelands, so they are currently #1 on my list.

Good call. I had my swing analyzed when I played for North Stone, but I never had it done when I went to purchase. I should definitely give that a shot.

I really like the way the Cleveland irons sit. I don't like irons with an offset at the hosel, and most of the Titleist's and Clevelands don't.

I like the TaylorMade Draw irons too... there's too many choices really. I went in Martins in Myrtle Beach two weeks ago when we were down there... you could really go crazy trying to narrow it down without some professional help.

I gotcha. Yea I attend East Carolina University so I play up here. Honestly, the courses aren't much fun here. I've never played in Wilmington though.

Come on down man... tons of courses. The muni is nice most all year, just gotta watch out 'cause the holes are pretty close together and there's lots of high handicappers out there.

I'd love to get down there. I have a lot of friends that live there. I'll definitely check it out. I'll let you know and hopefully we can hit the links.

Just got everything fitted as my older clubs are still out of the country. Spent a couple hours at golf galaxy where fitting and swing analysis is free.

Mizuno MX 300 Irons

Taylormade Hybrids

Nike Square-head driver

Cleveland wedge 56

Ping putter

Ogio bag

So far I am having trouble with the hybrids. i used to have King Cobra 3/5/7 woods which i liked. Love the square-head. That is the only club i would urge you to hit. The rest are just personal preference

    • Sure if you just blindly look at stats, you can pinpoint a couple areas that look similar. But come on man that's lazy analysis. Instead of throwing lower percentage throws, Dalton held onto the ball unconscionably long, leading to several of those sacks including that unthinkable one at the end of the first half, inflating his completion percentage. Bryce for all his flaws, does a pretty good job of escaping pressure and scrambling for 5 yards or throwing it away. Dalton's pocket presence was just so incredibly bad today, which led to both of his lost fumbles. If Bryce would just hold onto the ball and get sacked every 3rd play instead of throw it away or try a contested pass, his completion percentage would be 15 points higher than Dalton's today. And Bryce only had more yardage in 3 of 7 games? You mean when we played run heavy schemes in our wins, instead of Dalton being forced to throw all game cause we're getting blown out?  Look anyone is more than justified in arguing Bryce Young doesn't have the tools to lead this team to a super bowl. But he has been head and shoulders better this year than what Dalton showed today. That was just an abysmal perfomance.
    • 100% correct.    we also have a team that is completely incapable of responding to adversity. The first sign of trouble and the team just unravels. I think that says a lot about coaching more than anything. It can also be explained with the amount of youth we have playing key roles on offense and defense.
    • He's not elevating anyone around him and will never be that kind of qb. He is what he is. He will always need a good team around him to play his best. His best is not a game changer but game manager. If you accept that then you will understand what the outlook is going forward.
