Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella is moving struggling starter Carlos Zambrano to the bullpen, and the move might not be temporary.

"I told him we really needed him in the bullpen," Piniella told reporters in New York before facing the Mets, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "We felt he could do a really nice job for us there.

Of course, the sportstalkers are all about this topic this AM.

Lots of stuff to examine.

Message being sent? To whom?

To Ricketts- Hendry has not shopped for the groceries properly, or was not given the funds to do so.

To Hendry- You didn't shop smart, and the 90+ mil to a guy with poor physical conditioning and poor mental makeup was a bad call.

From Lou- I don't give a damn what anybody thinks, I'm outta here next year so you can suck my balls.

To Zambrano- Get your poo together. No one is untouchable.

To the team- same as above

From a baseball standpoint, it is a weird move. He is a flaky sinkerballer. Not exactly your typical setup guy. Often struggles to find it in the first inning, has stamina issues. Should he really be throwing every other day given these things? Dunno.

On the flipside, he can't be any worse than the crap that has been paraded out there thus far. Samadzija has been garbage, another 10 mill waste. Grabow is what he has always been, just a guy. And not a good one. This team expected to contend in a league that has become a bullpen league with THAT crap? I sure didn't see it, and had zero expectations.

So yeah, I get it, but I think the more intriguing aspect is the above mentioned "messages" and how you choose to interpret them.

    • Never, and it doesn't have to be an old grizzled vet, sometimes a vet can learn something from a young player too.   Do you not see players talking to each other between plays, quarters, on the bench, wherever, in EVERY sport? It's what players do, especially the great ones, they're always working on their craft and learning tips from others to better themselves.   So when your entire receiving room outside of one player, who has mostly played special teams in his career, has played 1 season or less in the NFL, it's not a lot of experience there in the locker room and on the sideline and is a tad concerning in regards to the proper growth of all these young WRs with great potential.
    • So me "putting my foot down" would be me spending more money each season to watch the games without sound at the bar? Do you not see how dumb that sounds? Streaming a game here or there isn't tough, but doing it for 17 games a season, when more than half the time the quality is terrible if it's even working at all, and it's just an awful experience to follow your favorite team. It's literally spending at minimum an extra $100 a season to have a worse viewing experience if I were to "put my foot down" as you say, and then don't get to also be able to easily watch all my fantasy players as a bonus on top. I spent at over a dozen years going to the bar every Sunday to watch us play, so now that I get to watch from the comfort of my couch, plus get all the other games, and spend less money doing so, yea, I'm going to pay that money without a second thought, it's a great deal for me and tons of other fans.
    • I wanted Stroud as well because Reich only wanted folks who fit his scheme and he isn't a good enough coach to adapt to his players. Canales didn't have that choice and was hired knowing that his job was developing Bryce. To his credit he was able to embrace the challenge and make the necessary changes.
