Brad Miller agrees to deal with Rockets

HOUSTON (AP)—Free agent center Brad Miller has agreed to a three-year, $15 million contract with the Houston Rockets.

The 7-foot Miller averaged 8.8 points and 4.9 rebounds for Chicago last season. Miller played in Sacramento from 2003-09, including three seasons playing for current Houston coach Rick Adelman.

Agent Mark Bartelstein said in a phone interview on Saturday that reuniting with Adelman was a major factor in Miller’s decision.

“Coach Adelman was a huge part of it,” Bartelstein said. “He had a great time playing for him, and he thinks he’s a great, great coach.”

The 34-year-old Miller will back up All-Star center Yao Ming, who’s expected to return healthy next season after sitting out a year to recover from foot surgery.

The Rockets initially pursued Chris Bosh when free agency opened on July 1, but Bosh chose to join LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in Miami. Houston agreed to terms this week with restricted free agents Kyle Lowry and Luis Scola.

Miller will enter his 13th NBA season. His best year came in 2003-04, his first with the Kings under Adelman, when he averaged 14.1 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. He averaged a career-high 15.6 points in 2004-05.

The Rockets were undersized last season and missed the playoffs with a 42-40 record. Yao is coming off reconstructive surgery on his left foot, and the team has said his minutes will be carefully monitored next season. Miller played in all 82 regular-season games for the Bulls last season, averaging 24 minutes per game.

Bartelstein said Miller was courted by several teams, but saw championship potential in Houston.

“The Rockets have a chance to be really good next year,” Bartelstein said. “With Yao being back, they’ve also got a lot of really good pieces. They could really be a championship contender.”

Anybody else feel like $5MM a year is too much for Brad Miller?

Yep, but other than the guys signing for lower deals in Miami, what FA this offseason has signed for appropriate value?

Look to the Bobcats for example- I like TT, but 8 mil a year for him is crazy!

      The same folks crying about the OL right now were crying about it in 2023 too. We have tied up over 100 million dollars in two interior olinemen alone and we have Taylor Moton inked to a recent extension. We've invested multiple first and second round picks in the offense. We hired an offensive minded head coach. This is an offensive team. The offense needs to produce or people need to be replaced.

      This is the same place that has ridiculed and blasted Caleb Williams at every opportunity he has his team sitting at 10-4 in the same NFC that the Panthers are competing in. And their division in the NFC North is as or more competitive as our division. Yet from the same people who have very high standards for Williams we get every excuse imaginable for the smallest starting QB in the league even when he and his team continue to disappoint when the pressure is on. You lot aren't any less inconsistent than anyone else.

      The Panthers are 9th in cap spent on offense this year.  However next season is already a different story  The Panthers as it stands right now will be 18th in cap spent on offense and 8th in cap spent on defense  The Panthers are currently set to spend more on defense next year than they are on offense this season Guys like Jaycee and Moehrig cap numbers take a big jump. Wharton has a massive cap hit   Jaycee Moehrig and Wharton in 2025 The same 3 in 2026 So this same defense as it stands right now will cost more in 2026 than this offense does right now… Got anything else you want to try?
