My Musings...

For everything good I said about Clausen, there is one thing that sticks in the back of my head... I think he has a little bit of Jake in him too... in a good and bad way...

He is super competitive and wants to be fiery I think, but he also might be prone to forcing things, which got Jake into a lot of trouble...

One thing that lessens my fear of that point is that he threw it away a few times when there was nothing there or the pocket collapsed too much (which it did too often)... Cantwell did not, and there was one obvious play where he should have done so...

I think it just look more forced due to his couple of weird throws. Even if it was forced, I think he made the right decisions. A bit better on that spiral and throwing motion in general would've probably made it a bit better and safer.

I don't think he has forced it to the point where it would be game-changing dangerous... yet.

5. I was really impressed with Clausen, as I figured I would be since I had him as the highest rated QB in the draft... I know this will sound crazy, but the way he carried himself and called out the defense, as well as his motion in the pocket and his progressions reminded me a LOT of a certain QB in New England... No, I'm not going to say that he is going to be that good of a player, and I don't want him starting for us this year, but he is going to be very very good at the pro level...

brady is good, but i'd rather find similarities to the last notre dame qb worth mentioning

On the Hardy note... I will concede that I would like to see him going against a starting OL before I annoint him as the next Peppers, but it was the little things he showed me last night that blew me away for him being a rookie...

There was one running play where he made an immediate adjustment and came off of his block where he was already pretty much behind the halfback... He swallowed him up and dropped him for a loss... That is a fast reaction, and a special trait for a DE to have, and to be able to do it as a rookie is a good sign of enormous potential... It is the read/react reflex like that that allowed Pep to keep pursuit, as well as jump up for quick interceptions and blocked kicks...

I was also going to add, and this is for the Ravens, but big ups to Terrence Cody... As much hell as I gave him for being fat, he went out there and did his thing last night... For almost the entire game... I was impressed...

After we drafted him, I started watching some of his highlights, and came the same conclusion. His poise and pocket presence reminded me a whole hell of a lot of Tom Brady.

In watching him last night for most of the game, I modified that to be a 90% Tom Brady, 10% Brett Favre. I'll be watching his development with interest from here on out.

The Ravens were blitzing the poo out of us in certain situations...

Clausen's pre-snap reads were very very good... and he had a great awareness when the pocket collapsed about where the pressure was coming from around him...

Moore, as someone else pointed out, needs to get a better feel of that pressure... He almost got himself hurt on that blindside hit...

I take no issue with his propensity to force the ball into a tight speedo, I mean spot. Jake got into trouble doing it because he did not have the accuracy or skill to really do it consistently. As long as he is willing to throw it away when it is absolutely not there then I don't think it is a bad thing.

I liked what I saw from the D-line, especially Hardy. Yes it is preseason and Hardy played against the 2nd and 3rd string but he made the most of his oppotunities. Clausen looked good and I the Int wasn't his fault. I would like to see a spiral from him more. His throws are wobbly.

I can sort of see how he may have forced a few throws, especially that dump off pass where he ran right and threw it to a RB surrounded by random D-linemen. But I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere on here that he actually plays it a lot more safe as far as passing, supposedly due to Charlie Weis' teachings, which is why he had a low interception total his senior year.

And regarding the Cantwell play, I'm pretty sure you're talking about the play that a Ravens D-lineman slipped or tripped to the ground and was flopping RIGHT BESIDE Cantwell on the ground for a good 2-3 seconds and Cantwell just stood there holding on to the ball. That was absolutely terrible.

That was the one... the guy had him by the feet for a second or two, he pump faked (I think?) and then went to the ground... Should have chunked it to the sideline...

What was the deal with Pike getting pulled out in favor of Cantwell at the end? I haven't heard much about that... Just wanted to put Cantwell in that situation?

    • lol, that second part is quite literally one of the dumbest things ever. Having or not having guaranteed contracts has absolutely nothing to do with how much these billionaires have to pay.  Because there is a hard cap and a minimum cap spend requirement, and teams either use their cap or roll it over to use it all the next year, so the owners have to pay the same amount of money in the end no matter what. Having fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL would only hurt salary cap management, and thus would end up screwing over the team and its fan base when teams kiss on signings as they take up cap room that is needed to improve the roster. Look at the Browns with Watson, they gave him the fully guaranteed deal and all it’s doing is sucking up massive cap space now.  If they hadn’t done that, the owner would still be paying the same amount of money each year as that cap space would still be used elsewhere. If you want to argue for fully guaranteed contracts because the players deserve it, that’s an entirely different argument and a fair one to discuss.  But anyone against fully guaranteed deals isn’t doing it to argue for the billionaire owners.

    • Ryabkin could be the steal of the draft, he was a Top 10 pick heading into last season and had a rough year.  Lots of GMs passed on him because of that and his workouts. Pick has really high upside and Svech should be able to translate Rod tearing his arse a new one for making dumb plays since Svech has had several years of it.  🤣😂
