Matt Moore's Biggest Weakness?

Yeah, a lot of you can make some jokes with that title/prompt... But, in all seriousness, yesterday I think his biggest weakness was exposed.

Take into account, none of us really know where the concussion occurred, although I agree with the assessment that it happened earlier in the game and when he walked off the field in the 4th he had been concussed further or for a 2nd time. If it happened in the 3rd it would excuse this 'weakness,' if not, then MM may not really be who we thought he was or could be.

The weakness - He doesn't progress through his reads. More specifically, he negated an entire side of the field.

Seemed to me, most of his passes went either to the right or middle, which may be the norm for most QBs being that they are mostly right-handed and offenses are designed around that, but QBs are supposed to work through their reads regardless.

The most obvious example of this was in the redzone. I don't have DVR on campus, but my mind is just as good sometimes, lol... Anyway, I believe it was Stewart that was in the game. He ran out to the flat 2 plays and had a good 5 yards or so between him and the nearest defender, and I trust Stewart to break almost any one-on-one tackle... Moore never looked back to him AT ALL, not even a glance. I remember thinking, why don't you just turn to your left and throw it!!! I'm almost sure it would've been a TD, and it didn't happen just once, but twice at the least. I can't remember if it was on 2 separate drives or just one, but I know it happened at least twice.

It just seems like he progressed through his reads last year. Either that, or the guy the play was designed for was open enough to throw it to and the 2nd option was close by.

Ive always believed that a team lives and dies by the guys who put their hand on the ground before the snap. I'm not excusing Matt's bad decisions or his inaccurate throws by pointing out that the line was on vacation but seriously, Joe Montana couldn't have done poo with our O-line yesterday.

Matt played poorly yesterday.

Is that clear enough?

But his poor play was exacerbated by and can benefit most from the O-line getting their act together.

I think you're exaggerating the bad play of the line. It was not THAT bad. There were spots where it was that bad but not the entire game.

this was also something from last year i noticed. he tends to float the long ball. a couple of those passes were intercepted were floated up there. unless the wr were wide open dbs can catch up.

Crazy floaters... I was going crazy when I saw those. They can work but you better be throwing to damn perfectly placed spot on the field.

    • His size will always limit him.  Do t kid yourself
    • When a team has EXPECTATIONS you have to show them that your fandom and praise is EARNED.  People would be mad if the they lost two one goal competitive games like 2023 but they wouldn't have gotten booed out of the building because the effort and competitiveness would be there but to lose in THAT fashion at home with your entire top line going free lance and saying fug this yeahhh.
    • Well with back to back road games to open the season again we really can't afford a "slow start" at least not for the psyche of the fanbase that is already at rock bottom from years of losing. I think that will depend on our approach to preseason this go around. But I do agree the makings of a culture change could be big for us. At the same time we heard talk of this last year and then we got the doors blown off multiple times. I can agree with you it's best to try to maintain perspective until we get closer to the midway point of the season. The main things I want to see early on even if we aren't necessarily winning is spark and toughness from the offense and defense and at least keeping games close.
