Console RPG Central

I made this thread for my love of RPGs. I have been an RPG fan since the days of Chrono Cross, Xenogears, FF7, Skies of Arcadia (GC) etc. Those games to me are legendary. I am in my mid 20s now and still have my love for RPGs, they are so involving. I decided to make an official RPG thread. Feel free to discuss any love for RPGs, even though today I will be talking about upcoming RPGs.

RPG fans, it's that time of the year. October. The best month for a gamer, but to an RPG fan it means even more. Quality console RPGs are almost never released outside the holiday months, specifically October. Sometimes its not until many years one comes out. RPG games take more time, and more work for the same profit point. TO me they are the real reason/value in playing games.

This isn't the playstation days where games had depth and meaning. Now days people want a sharp looking fancy FPS or a mindless destruction game. They don't want a game you have to involve yourself with, you have to remember things that aren't written down for you and what I think scares people the most of actually doing things and going places without the game tell you where to go, free will.

So this time of year really means a lot to us RPG fans. I have three games for October than I am ecstatic for. I only have a XBOX 360 so I only speak for these games as of now. These are coming from my perspective, not other reviews.

Two Worlds II Due:10/05/2010

This is the game I am most thrilled about which may surprise some of you. The first Two Worlds game had mixed reviews. Some people loved it and some hated it. I loved it. What I loved most about it was it's potential. I loved Oblivion, it set a bar. Two worlds approached that bar very closely. The game is the closest thing to a next generation Oblivion than any other game that has come out. Problem was it had many many bugs and it was extremely difficult as a game in general. Also Two worlds online was horrible. I hope to see these things fixed with this one. If they can deliver, expect this game to be the best RPG this year.

Fallout Vegas Due: October 19, 2010

Fallout 3 was a great game. Tons to do in an open world. I tend to like the more mid-evil (spells, sword) RPGs but this one was really awesome. Tons of configurations and side quests. What this game lacked was involvement and AI awareness. In Morrowind and more/less Oblivion if you kill say an important person and walk across the world, walk by an AI and they will make a comment about what you have done, the person you have become and will continue to. This is the kind of involvement Fallout needs. AI awareness of the stages of the game.

The game also needs more personal/relationship depth, the conversation abilities are fine and what you can do is fine but there needs more involvement and depth like owning a house, people knowing you, missions that alter the end etc. Fallout3 started off on the right track but didn't end well IMO. I don't think that will change in vegas but I will play it anyway, probably last of these three.

Open ended open world type RPGs are the absolute best.IMO However my last choice is a little different in concept but I still for some reason get addicted to playing this next series.

Fable III Due: October 26, 2010

Ahh, I remember waiting in line for the very first Fable. The hype is what killed that game (even though it was still great IMO) but the ideas infused into its creation have persevered and made some excellent RPG styled games.

Fable had everything Fallout 3 lacked like more involvement, being able to own a store, own a house, get married, become an evil or good person. But everything a game like fallout 3 has, like open-endedness, the ability to have complex conversations (which Dragon Age: origins is absolutely amazing in this aspect, play it!), the ability to really explore the world and do what you want, the Fable series has lacked. Still can't wait to play this game, hopefully they can make the game a little longer this time and the world a little larger, something Fable fans have been craving (and promised) since fable was released.

Game to look for early next year:Dragon Age II, March 8th

Fable 2 was terrible. Really really easy and got boring after waltzing through it.

Other two I agree with though (I play PC, not console though).

I never tried Two Worlds, though. I almost got it but the reviews are just so bad. From what I've read about Two Worlds 2, it sounds like it should be a big improvement on the first.

PSC that is the only lineup minus your game which I did not see but does look awesome as well. These are the only thing close that comes out on the 360 that are anywhere near quality RPGs. And since I am talking about consoles, specifically the 360 as said.

Looks like I have more money to save with the addition of that game.

The first Two Worlds got really horrible reviews. Graphics were compared to Playstation 2 graphics, and the developers used "bait and switch" and used better animation on the trailers then was even close to the game. It's going to take really great reviews on TWII to bring people back to it. It doesn't matter how good the gameplay is, if the graphics aren't better than PS2 it's going to fail.

    • While I agree with you in spirit my gut and my heart says I'm not falling for this again until I see consistent results across the entire upcoming season. Then I'll breathe a sigh of relief and truly feel better about the future.
    • After some time to process and also in light of other small markets being successful and not requiring top overall picks to compete. This years finals looming large. While I readily acknowledge the league office clearly despises our franchise and has absolutely no qualms about us getting the short end of any stick in the draft lottery. The Hornets may just be doomed regardless due to their own mismanagement and inability to draft and develop legitimate playoff worthy talent. And we seemingly always pick the wrong player in the draft. I mean at this point we can even take a hard look at the 2020 draft and someone like Haliburton going pick 12 while Ball went 3rd. Did we draft the wrong guy or are we just that inept at any level of talent development or is it a mixture of both? Looks the latter right now.
    • I feel we are already moving in a better direction before we even take a snap this season.  We have hope now.  People are talking about us brewing something special. Remember how dismal things were when Rhule was here?
