Facepalm Moment

Today in my first period, I was teaching weather expressions in Spanish. One of the activities from the book was asking what the weather was like in certain places in a certain month. For example:

En Louisiana en noviembre

One of my students didn't know where Lousiana was. One of the students next her said "Do you know where New Orleans is" and she responded "Whats that?"

I seriously facepalmed right there. Our country is doomed if this is our future.

how old?

i still don't have a great knowledge of geography.

10th grader. I can understand not knowing exactly where its at, but you should at least know its in the south east.

And like it or not (despite mother nature's attempts) New Orleans is still a major city. I can't believe she didn't know what it was.

Wow what an idiot. Has she never heard of Mardi Gras? That would probably be the only thing she would recognize maybe....but yeah she was around when Katrina hit...

Props to you for teaching Espanol, I love the language.

Ha, thanks. The favorite thing I get in class is "Do I have to answer this in Spanish?" or "You know we don't speak Spanish right?

Really? 10th grade and if you don't know the states and roughly where they are at in the US. Then it's a good thing 12/21/12 is alomst here, because we are doomed for that next generation to take over.

    • Yep, the Panthers powers that be seem desperate to convince themselves he can clear the bare minimum bar of demanding a legit franchise QB contract. Canales seems to be laying the groundwork here of building the case that all of Bryce's shortcomings are still there and even more glaring than you may have thought while his strengths aren't nearly as strong as you had hoped and aren't near enough to make up for the lack of pure physical tools. When you have historically anomalous lack of measurables you need historically anomalous positive intangibles to make up for it. That was always issue with Bryce as a prospect. Like Parcells said when evaluating him, "he better walk on water".
    • I'm honestly not sure how much "west coast" plays into it. There's a huge difference between Tucson, AZ and Spokane, WA where he spent the previous two decades of his career. Chapel Hill is significantly different than Spokane but way more similar to it than Tucson. You're talking about a pretty significant plane ride to get back home either way. He and his family would be flying private and direct so we're talking about a 3ish hour flight vs. a 5ish hour flight. That's basically a wash. It's not like he went from Gonzaga to another PNW program. Tucson is a dramatic departure from Washington state. Honestly a far bigger departure climatically and scenery wise than Chapel Hill would be.
