Hurney shouldn't be fired for two main reasons

Cyberjag,

Comparing the team the AJ Smith has built and the one built by Hurney makes me LOL.

TheFuzz,

I believe that even you could build a very strong team if you managed to have the number one overall pick during a once-in-a-generation draft for top quarterbacks. They traded Manning for Rivers and several draft picks, picks which became Nate Kaeding and Shawne Merriman (the sterioded version). This is the same team that got LaDanian Thomlinson and Drew Brees in 2001.

In his first year as GM, he whiffed badly in the draft, but lucked out when he signed Antonio Gates as a UDFA (and we all know, blowing early picks while finding undrafted and late round gems makes you a genius if you're not Marty Hurney). The team was bad enough to get the first overall pick.

2004 and 2005 were good drafts, if you judge him by standards you refuse to apply to Hurney. And then from 2006 on he's been mediocre.

Philip Rivers is one of those QBs who will make any team consistently good. He should get more credit for the Chargers record than Smith.

I really, really don't get the love affair here with that guy.

Truths and opinions.

Their opinion is that we should keep Hurney, mine is that we need a breath of fresh air in the FO.

I am not saying that Hurney is the best GM, nor we worst, but has just been for a bit too long. Over his body of work, Hurney has been really good for the Panthers, but the last two drafts, and years of personnel choices have soured him, to me.

You don't want a breath of fresh air, you want a hurricane that blows us back to expansion-land.

You don't like the coaches

You don't like the GM

You don't like the owner

Can you tell me something you DO like about our team? Other than the logo?

Never said that I don't like JR, I just don't like what he is doing right now, but trust that he will at least try to right the ship.

Do you think that Fox should stay?

I understand that Hurney has done some really good things while here, but I think that sometimes a new direction is in order.

I love the Panthers, but to say that I am happy with the team when they are one of the worst teams in the league seems...well stupid.

I only have to point my fingers at the E. Brown and A. Edwards picks to say goodbye to Hurney.

I hated the picks then, and I hate them now. You say they can't be judged, and I say that they were horrible choices.

Fine, let's just say that they ARE horrible choices. So was signing Justin Hartwig. So was signing David Carr. So was drafting Shelton and Jarrett.

Tell me what the criteria for a successful GM is in your world.

We had Peppers rented for one final year at stupid cost, a highly rated DE slips into the second, we move for him and this is bad? Brown was a VERY good DE at Florida State. He looks to be a bust now, but how can you fault them for making that move?

Armanti wouldn't have been around in the 6th, no matter what you had on your mock. He could bust too, but neither of us will know for a few years there.

hartwig was just bad because he got hurt the second he got here

that's like the dude in our callout thread saying adam meadows was a bad move because he retired out of the blue, even giving back his signing bonus

yeah, yeah... I know. :P

It's easy Cyber. To consistently win.

Ok, so he needs to consistently win. And when he's been set free to do so, what have the results been overall?

Here's a hint: he's won more games than all but a few teams in the league. So maybe you should refine your criteria a little, get it narrowed down to the point where it actually looks like you shouldn't be supporting the guy.

He slips, then we give up a 1st to get him. That is where it got bad.

AE is a developmental player that we gave up a 2nd round pick for, and used the current 3rd. We are a losing team and cannot afford to spend 2nd rounders on players that have to change positions, and are making the jump from D2 ball to the NFL.

How many back to back seasons have we been in the playoffs?

Back to back seasons winning the NFC South?

Back to back winning seasons?

I love the fact that we have not had 2-14, 3-13, 5-11 seasons, but we also don't go out and put up back to back 11-5, 12-4, 13-3 seasons either.

    • Cards weren't really blitzing that much the entire game.  The ones they sent just wrecked Bryce.  My opinion is you are over fixated on what happened as we got close to the goal.   The one possession we had in the 3rd quarter? That was a freebie to get down there.  It was literally just checkdowns to the TE when we weren't running the ball down... 24 taking up the entire quarter.  Next quarter Cards were inviting the exact same behavior.  Which is why they were both clock eating small ball 14 play drives.
    • I don't think they changed as much as you think between the INT and the final sack (immediate pressure with 4 linemen). They definitely stopped blitzing as much, if a blitz means rushing more than the front 4/5. They definitely did some exotic packages where they sent LBs/DBs and dropped linemen into coverage though. The fumble and INT were both blitzes. And yes they were successful. And yes, I agreed with Bryce not taking care of the ball. Really not many answers on those plays - just take the sack and live another play (unless you're Lamar). Which he didn't do. And no, you can't run prevent on the goal line. What's prevent defense to you? Alignment, personnel, cushion, etc.? Just curious. My reply was to the post that they sat back in some soft zone the whole game - until the end, when it mattered. That's not true. They blitzed, they disguised coverages and blitzers, they pressed, they bailed, they covered the flats, all of that. Not trying to argue. Just trying to inform. Actually they only blitzed once on the final drive, and the DB got away with a bad hold on Tremayne. Otherwise looked like it would have been a completion for a first down. The Cardinals' final drive defense looked a lot like the rest of the game.  I know it's easy to get upset after a lose (I'm guilty), but Mondays are when cooler heads prevail. Right? Emotions can make us seem like we don't know what we're talking about. The Huddle isn't supposed to be that. I always saw it as a place to go discuss the Carolina Panthers with more than the casual fan, and their emotionally charged opinions. I can get that at the local grocery store, where they don't know anything about NC/SC, let alone the Panthers.
