NFLPA Response to Owners Desire for 18-Game Season

Nope...don't buy it.

The players are EMPLOYEES....not OWNERS.

They are not entitled to higher salaries becasue the company is making money.

Do you think your company will share the profits with you after this recession? Hell no.

First, "yes", I think my company will share profits with me - since I am the owner :-)

That being said, if I have an agreement/contract with an employee or contractor and we agreed to it based on a certain set of facts and then I go ahead and change them I would expect to compensate that person for that material change in our agreement. The same is for agreements I sign with others. In this case the players entered agreements and negotiated based on a 16 game schedule. Changing to an 18 games schedule is material in this situation and the players/employees should be compensated for such.

Now I am not an attorney nor know the real legal applications here but to say the players are just employees and should play two extra games without compenstion is to simple.

That all being said, this arguement will not need to apply to new players coming into the leaque or free agents because they will be negoting contracts based on an 18 game regular season schedule.

I am not saying that they shouldn't ask for more....hell, you should always go for more.

But, the players are not really playing two extra games. They are still playing a total of 20 games.

I think the players the players should negotiate whatever they can in this new deal. That is the American way.

I just think the arbitrary concept that the players deserve a % of the profits and deserve more becuase of the success of the company is fundamentally wrong....they are indeed just employees. You are the owner of your co, so you are entitled to the profits for your investment. You may chose to have a profit sharing with your employees, but they do not have a "right" to it. But, if they can negotiate more pay, then good for them.

Riddle me this....if the profitablity of your company doubled next year, would you double the salary of all your employees? I doubt you would.

Or better yet, and even more likely, would you expect your pay to get whacked when the company has difficulties (2008-present recession included)?

Sure, I haven't had a pay increase in a few years, but the company isn't having its best year anyway. But, even during tough times the thought of a pay cut has never been an option to the corporation.
