Elway trips coming out of the gate

When people ask me to name the greatest quarterback of all time, John Elway is always one of the first names that pops in my head (along with Aikman, Marino and Favre).

But you know how they say great players don't generally make great coaches or executives?

Elway is providing some evidence of that.

His first major assignment was to try and talk Jim Harbaugh into making the same jump he did (Stanford to Denver).

Speculation prior to the game was that a big name like Elway would have plenty of pull.

Post game? Denver's never even been in the discussion. But I'm sure they'll now say they weren't really that interested in Harbaugh.

Yeah, sure. Neither were the Panthers.

(those phone calls he didn't return were all wrong numbers; someone got his number mixed up with Greg Manusky's) :sosp:

But that's okay. They moved on to their next candidate, that being Atlanta OC Mike Mularkey.

Or is it "Mark"?

Per a PFT story, while being asked about the interview, Elway repeatedly referred to the Atlanta OC as "Mark Mularkey".

Well now Mike (or Mark, whatever) has pushed back his scheduled interview with Denver. He's going to go ahead and interview with Cleveland, but said he doesn't want to do "back to back" interviews so the Broncs will have to wait until the Falcons postseason is over.

Florio speculates that maybe by the time the interview rolls around, Elway will know what Mularkey's first name is.

Solid start John :frown2:

But don't worry. If Mularkey doesn't work out, you can always try for Joe Fox

Teams win championships. There is a reason Elway never won until Terrell Davis showed up.

Montana and Young don't win without Rice, nor Kelly without Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed, etc etc.

Not many would leave Elway out of the top ten. Aikman is a tougher argument, but not Elway.

I've been on the Elway is overrated wagon forever. Other than throwing for a bunch of yards he's pretty mediocre.

EDIT: I just realized i left Favre out. Brain fart.

EDIT: Concerning the first part. Kelly didn't win a SB.

For my 3rd edit: Elway had 5 seasons without a positive TD/INT ratio. Name one on my list who has near that many.

4th edit: Dan Fouts had more than 5 i believe but he played in the 70s also.

EDIT: I swear i'm gonna set a record for most edits on one post.

    • I see what you did there
    • Yeah the only way current set up is fun is if every year a different tiny school builds a super team and makes a run. You just need 1 rich guy to say you know what would be funny, if I drop 30 million and my school has a shot at a national championship.   They won't ever do it but put some sort of tiered salary cap in place and sign them to 4 year deals. You can only transfer up or down tiers no lateral moves because mean ole coach at texas doesn't play me enough so I'm going to Tennessee. So a player at prairie view can transfer to texas and get paid more or a player from UNC can transfer to UNCG because he isn't getting playing time. If a guy is transferring "up" he can get a salary bump if the team has salary cap space. A guy transferring down has to stay at the same salary as he signed his 4 year deal for so the lower tier team would have to have the cap space to sign him. It would stop the money chasing for lateral moves but allow guys who improve massively at lower schools to make more money as juniors and seniors and hopefully keep more guys in one place because the contract is for 4 years.
    • Bryce youngs first starts for 3 years   51 of 103 49%     153 yards avg 6 ints 2 tds   But this is the year he turns it around
