Salary Cap Numbers

Very misleading.

Sure, simple math shows that we are only 9 million under BUT, we have set up to easily create cap room as needed. For example, Gamble's new deal included a $10 Million "Roster" bonus. As a roster bonus, it all counts on the cap in the year it is paid and is now being tallied that way in the cap room reports. BUt a simple stroke of the pen and we convert it to "signing" bonus and we can pro-rate it over the term of the contract giving us $8 million more cap room instantly. I'm sure the contract contained a clausde making the swap from roster to signing bonus a team option. Gamble still gets his money up front so it shouldn't make a difference to him.

I don't think that it was misleading. He stated what each team currently has in cap space as reported by several sources. I'm sure that not one of those teams will end up with that exact same amount by the time FA starts.

As for cutting Vincient. If he has some type of clause in his contract for starting games this past season that could be a big issue. He was good and should be the slated as the starter for next season but he is also injuried. The same injury that took two years to heal from the last go around. If Vincent has a cap # of lets say 2-3 million and doesn't play this season that could be a big hit to what the Panthers could go out and sign, namely re-signing Geoff Hangartner. Not saying Hangartner is better but he does seem to be more reliable over the course of the two careers.

He posted an amount of space, then stated some less than desirable (IMO) options to free up $8 million. Converting Gamble's roster bonus and rolling his $4 million guaranteed salary into a signing bonus frees up almost $11 million without the cuts or extensions. The bottom line is we don't need to cut anybody until we're sure that they can be replaced with equal or better players. Sure, we're over-paying in a few spots. All teams do. Panic cuts can amount to throwing the baby out with the bath water.

I see your point. The cap space # isn't misleading but the options he gives for increasing the cap space is.

How do you know this about Gamble? Was this reported in a article at some point? If that is the case then the Panthers will be good shape for free agency. I would still cut Hackett and Goings. I think Jarrett and the kid on the practice squade, Brimingham?, are suitable replacements. The others I agree that you wait and see what you get first before cutting players.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
