Players of interest / Offseason Cuts

Mr. Scot

A name I have not heard that could be a 1-2 year insurance policy for Delhomme is Charlie Batch. His contract is up I believe and the Steelers have a Byron Leftwitch in their QB rotation. Batch has about the same amount of years as Delhomme left in the tank and I think could help out if Jake needs to take a rest.

Others:

Shaun McDonald WR Lions

Jermain Philips DB Bucs (Unsure of his current status but would love to see us take a look at him)

Jonathan Babineaux DL ATL (He could be a solid backup)

I don't think Batch gives us anything we don't already have in McCown.

Babineaux I could somewhat see, although I'm personally hoping they get a starter quality DT and go back to rotating Kemo and Lewis. In that scenario, Gary Gibson might be a younger, cheaper option if he returns to form.

Raiders may release Ron Curry and Kwame Harris. Curry was once a good big receiver but may have fallen off. He or Mike Furrey could be cheaper - but less promising - options than trying to trade for Anquan Boldin.

Kwame Harris has been largely a bust. I'd only look at him for depth, but we went the "bust for depth" route once before with Kenyatta Walker and it didn't last long.

Also possible for OL depth, 49ers are letting go of Jonas Jennings. He's big and is a veteran, but also gets hurt a fair amount. They're also letting go of Tully Banta-Cain who's been a DL-LB tweener.

Michael Huff played some pretty good football in Oakland. He had one bad year and that was this year, so I would hardly call him a bust.

Patrick Surtain is way too old, why the hell would we want him?

Orlando Pace is too old and I think he would provide nothing but injuries.

Justin Miller would not be a bad pick up, I think he'd be better than CJ Wilson.

Mike Furrey, get him because I miss Ricky Proehl. He also led the league in receptions a few years ago. So the can catch. Reminds me of Ricky.

Leigh Bodden is a good corner, he played for the lions, so I still think he's got the talent but I think he goes somewhere else.

I also believe we sign Hangartner.

Jags are reportedly cutting Jerry Porter and Drayton Florence.

Porter looked like a world beater in Oakland. In Jacksonville, not so much. Florence, I think, is a former Charger so Boltergeist may have some info on him.

for some reason WRs never really thrive in Jacksonville.

Looked it up. Florence was indeed a former Charger. Played there up til last year when he signed with the Jags.

Denver let a couple guys go, including former Panther RB Alex Haynes and temporary Panther TE Chad Mustard.

Texans let go of LB Morlon Greenwood. Can't say I know the name well but if new LB coach Richard Smith liked him in Houston, he might suggest we look at him.

Does Morlon Greenwood play special teams?

Looked up his stats. He's started most of his career. Was originally drafted 3rd round out of Syracuse in 01 by Miami. Lost his starting job this past season to a younger guy and was apparently too expensive to keep as a reserve.

Kubiak praised him as hard working and said he'll play for somebody this year. Just not the Texans.

We've probably already got more decent LBs than we can keep (younger too) but if he was a guy Richard Smith liked, the team could conceivably work him out.

Me? I'm ambivalent :sosp:

Just found this. Didn't see him listed anywhere else.

The Cardinals may let Antonio Smith walk in free agency because second-year DE Calais Campbell is waiting in the wings.

The 50th pick overall last year, Campbell is better built at 6'8/280 to play end in the 3-4 than Smith at 6'4/280. Campbell also has more upside as a pocket pusher. Smith was solid against the run last year, but he's probably gone.

    • Teams do some super stupid stuff with mid-fairly good QBs. I think they are just absolutely terrified they will be stuck with a QB that is not the quality of the QB they have now, even if its someone like Daniel Jones. Lots of trash QBs go in the first round. I encourage you to take a look at the sad, sad list of first round QBs in the last 15 years.
    • No, it will be a raw 6'7" 17-year-old European who just played basketball for the first time in March and who the idiot GM "had first on our board." He'll play the whole G-League season, get in 42 games for the Hornets and average 1.1 ppg on 35% shooting. Been there, seen that.
    • We missed on Burns at his peak value. That’s the problem with trading for picks 2-3 years away (which people were convinced the Rams would suck by now and these would be higher picks btw). Each year away the pick is the further in value it drops. Fitt was clearly hired based on turning us around quickly. It’s one of the many reasons tanking isn’t really a thing as our player JJ is telling you in this original article. It would take the whole organization from the owners down admitting they aren’t winning soon with Burns and picks 2-3 years away having more value because that’s when we are still rebuilding. It would only make sense if Fitt had a longer leash and would more than likely be the ones making these picks anyway which you wouldn’t want. The question is would you rather have those Rams picks with the strong possibility of Fitt still being here or would you rather Fitt try to “win now” like he did and expedite his firing? Altering the timeline would affect more than just the Rams picks.
