Is this messed up for a job?

I work recording live shows at venues around town. My boss is the owner of the recording studio and we are sub-contracted by a media company that does video and audio of the shows.

I get paid about $30-$50 a gig for working about 8-10 hours, usually until 2-3am and I always drive my own car with all the equipment. I've yet to be given notice about a show more than 3 hours in advance. I've been harping my boss to give me some kind of schedule so I can make plans. Today I text him and ask if he knows a good place to get audio gear repaired and he responds "We've got a gig tonight." I made plans tonight and told him I couldn't then he comes back and says "I told you to be ready all week" So now I guess he's pissed. I offered to come help tear down and load out after the show.

I think it's pretty messed up...no schedule, basically on call every day, but get paid sh!t. This is a "for my resume" job no doubt, so do you think I should cancel my plans for this job?

when would you have found out about the gig if you hadn't texted him today?

don't cancel your plans. your boss should, at a minimum, be able to tell you one week in advance. now if he told you about this gig a while ago and you forgot that's a different story. but it sounds like he just told you. i'm assuming that if this is the way he runs his businesses then he is probably going to need you down the line.

i just reread your post - you've yet to be given more than three hours notice for a gig? what the hell kind of a business is this? are you someone that he calls at the last minute cause Jimmy the in-house AV guy got too strung out the night before and can't score enough blow in time to recover before the next show?

I don't know the logistics behind the scheduling of the shows, but he HAS to know at least somewhat in advance. Me and the other guys who do the live show are basically always on call. He found someone else to work tonight I'm sure. I guarantee he'll need me again so I'm not worried, I have an SUV and he's the only one with a truck - everyone else has cars and can't carry all the equipment for the shows. I agree, wtf is with giving me three hours notice, and would he have told me there was a gig at all if I didn't text him?

unless you want your res to say that you are a sucker and easy to take advantage of, I'd quit yesterday

I'm new in town. In defense of taking this job, it has helped me make some new friends and connections in the music industry...

    • I was watching a YouTube and it was said that scout and GM insider types were saying the NIL had killed rounds 4-7. I don’t know that I buy it, seems like it might for a year or maybe two but then those guys have to move on.  NCAA is apparently about to give 5 years of eligibility. It is gonna skew those entrants older maybe.
    • Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that.
    • I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller.  As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations.  It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did.
