How do those work?

If another team signs a FA from us do we automatically get some?

1st, you have to have a net loss of free agents from the year before. This year's comp picks are from 2008. So, you can't cut many people (i.e., you can't replace them because you replace them with FAs, but the people you cut aren't people you "lose"). Also, RFAs, franchise/transition tag players don't count.

Then, compensatory picks are given out based on the value of the contract and based on the production of the player. There's no rhyme or reason for it. There's never been more than a 3rd given at a time, but some teams receive multiple picks for various situations.

I believe the performances of the FAs lost vs the ones picked up also play a role in this. But yeah, it's some formula we mere mortals never get to see.

It is a complex solution based on several factors. But the first factor is that you can not sign more free agents than you lost. Even if you lost 2 big time players and only signed 4 scrubs, you still get no picks in the next draft. We signed a ton of free agents last year: Vincent, Gibson, Hackett, Johnson, Wesley, Walker and perhaps Mark Jones counts also although he might not since he was signed so late. Therefore I doubt we lost more than that who wound up being signed by other teams.

So I doubt we get picks in this draft.

The highest I have seen picks awarded for players being lost is a third round pick BUT if we lose Peppers or Gross and some other free agents totaling say...4 that are re-signed by other teams, and we sign 5 free agents, we probably miss out on compensatory picks next year even if all 5 of our new guys turn out to be scrubs. It just works that way.
