I'm trying to suck an egg into a bottle

This is a science experiment my kid is trying to do for her 4-h project. Her project is on Tornadoes. We have tried and tried to suck an egg into a bottle and we cant seem to make it happen.

:confused5:

we have a long necked bottle a little smaller in diameter than the boiled peeled egg. Plenty of matches. Strike 3 matches, throw in the bottle & quickly put the egg on top. It's supposed to suck into the bottle but all it does is either get stuck halfway, break in half or nothing at all.

Suggestions?

Might also try setting the bottle in steaming hot water. Once the bottle is good and hot, take it out, put the matches in, egg on top and place in ice water. That will multiply the suction significantly.

Possibly shattering it as well. :D

She might just have to have her tornado in a bottle as the only demonstration. 2 2liter bottles taped together at the opening with one bottle filled 3/4 with water. Turn upside down and swirl to make the tornado in a bottle.

Are you using a tall neck bottle? Use a short neck bottle, I'd think.

It's a vase so it's hourglass shaped. I really need an old glass milk container, that is ideal from what I've read.

I guess I'll go to a thrift store tomorrow and bring home several different kinds of bottles.

    • A substack is a new deli item.  It's a layered creation in which the turkey, ham, chicken and liver mush are alternately placed between pancakes.  Lettuce and tomato are between the top two layers of flapjacks.
