Used to play at work. The trick is to get the corner, and to prevent your opponent from doing the same. The best way is to never put a stone in any corner-adjacent square. I also like to trap the opponent by letting them take every square on one side except the corners and one of the squares next to them, and then force them to take the corner next to the empty square. Then you just place a stone in that empty square and the next move take the other corner. It's weird at first, but after a while you start to develop little strategies.
