Rules of the Game

Why do NFL coaches insist on using the Fade route in the red zone. I watch a lot of NFL games and it seems that the success rate of that play is pretty low.

Most of the time the CB is in man against the WR so he can't see the ball. WR has a good chance to go up and get it. In addition, the fade is a corner of the endzone route. Either the WR gets it or it goes out of bounds.

Why does a team have a 53 man roster yet 8 players have to be de-activated on gameday?

New rule, 46 man gameday roster now that the 3rd QB rule has been eliminated. 53-7=46. Under the old rule, the 3rd QB was counted as inactive, but could play without restriction in the 4th quarter. I perused the list at nfl.com/inactives and all teams showed 7 inactive players for week one.

In the spirit of ATFQ, I think inactive players get paid less, either by contract or CBA rule. Pretty sure it's just like anything else nfl, all about the $$$.

BTW, the complete unadbridged rules used to be posted on nfl.com until they decided to just give us a sweetened condensed version. Without public access to the actual rules, they can change them as they go along to suit the current needs of their PR dept. I call this NASCAR-itis, as that's who had the idea first, for the same reasons listed above.

with todays rules why not bring back the run and shoot?

Isn't that a 1 back set that uses a lot of motion with the receivers to create mismatches and also is supposed to react to the defense mid play and break route according to the look? If so we do something like that with the panthers they motion a lot before the snap and steve breaks route a lot if he sees something.. look no further than our gamecocks for the fun and gun which is really close to the run and shoot.
