Panthers Madden Franchise Simulation

Catalyst

Recommended Posts

I've been simming a Panther franchise. Unfortunately I know how to exploit the draft so I sim 16-0 superbowl winning seasons pretty much all the time.

I typically have 20 first round picks every season because of the low value of future firsts and my ability to dig up the best players not in round 1. Madden's trade logic is retarded.

True, which is why I make it a point to keep things realistic. I could have a stacked team, but I only make trades/signings that are realistic and that I can see happening in real life.

TRANSACTIONS - WEEK 6:

LEAGUE STORYLINES - WEEK 6:

Panthers: Streak had to end sometime. Defense resembled last season against Saints. Yet another season-ending injury for OLB Thomas Davis. Could be career-threatening.

Falcons: Falcons need to work on running game during bye, but Matt Ryan has also been average this season without Michael Turner of old to lean on.

Buccaneers: They managed a win over the 'Skins, but Josh Freeman was underwhelming yet again. There should be real concern in Tampa about him.

Saints: This is the Saints we know and expected to see from opening day. Need to keep it up.

49ers: Injuries to the offensive line have really hurt this team.

Rams: Huge win to keep them in the hunt in the NFC West

Cardinals: Kolb's struggles could bring the Tyler Bray express to the desert next season with the 1st overall pick.

Seahawks: A terrible way to lose a game they should have won and dominated defensively for 50 minutes. Great performances by the two rookie studs Griffin & Polk.

Cowboys: If Jason Garrett survived the bye week he should make it the rest of the season. Don't expect Jerry Jones to wait long after that to fire him, though.

Eagles: At least they lost to a quality Steelers team in a close one. The Eagles are still in good shape.

Redskins: Matt Barkley continues to impress, even in defeat.

Giants: Tom Coughlin has to be among the coaches on the hot seat after this horrible start to the season. Sure they've lost close games, but this team was so good last year; what happened?

Packers: Huge win over previously undefeated Minnesota puts Pack back in NFC North driver's seat... for now.

Bears: Jay Cutler is very quietly having an outstanding season for the Bears.

Lions: Mikel LeShoure disappoints in first official start.

Vikings: They'll be back. It took everything the Packers had to beat them.

Patriots: They have to know they were out-played by the Seahawks for 3.5 quarters before the offense came to life. And even then it took a missed field goal by Seattle.

Jets: Just the kind of game you'd expect from the Ravens and Jets, though Rex Ryan was expecting a better result. Again, Mark Sanchez has to get better.

Bills: Defense has improved from last year; unfortunately the passing game has taken steps backwards.

Dolphins: You see those flashes of just how good Andrew Luck can be, but it's clear he's not one of those instant-impact rookies like Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, or Ben Roethlisberger. He'll get there, though.

Colts: He's baaaack!

Texans: How about Matt Leinart? 323 yards and 3 TD's in your first start in years isn't anything to sneeze at. He may have just given himself a shot at reviving his career come the offseason.

Jaguars: The defense had to cave at some point... but make no mistake, the offense - and particularly Blaine Gabbert - is the real problem here.

Titans: I think it's safe to say the Titans expected much better from Jake Locker. Matt Hasselbeck has been re-named the starter.

Browns: A few more games like that and we'll be seeing Landry Jones get another shot.

Steelers: Just another couple weeks before Troy Polamalu returns and gives the Steelers a much needed boost on defense.

Ravens: All the talk is on Joe Flacco, but the defense is still the heart and soul of this team.

Bengals: Trent Richardson could already be the best running back in the NFL. Yes, I said it. At the very least he's the best this season so far.

Raiders: Shouldn't Carson Palmer (1,133 yards, 9 TD's, 1 INT) be a legitimate MVP candidate? He has the Raiders on track for a possible #1 seed.

Chargers: It's going to take a lot more than a win over the Browns to turn things around for Norv Turner and co.

Chiefs: Bye week sees focus on defense, running game.

Broncos: What more can be said about how bad the Broncos offense is? This simply can't be all on the players; there's much more blame on the coaching staff. At this rate, that won't be an issue for much longer.

Alright, so it looks like the Colts are going to end up with the 1st overall pick and not the Dolphins, so I'm going to go back and 'retcon' some of the draft via cut/release/trade.

- Dolphins trade up from 2nd to 1st overall to take Luck and also get a 5th rounder in 2013.

- Colts get the Dolphins 1st, 2nd, & one of their 3rd rounders in '12 and their 1st & 2nd rounders in '13.

- With the Dolphins picks, the Colts take Matt Kalil 2nd overall, Cordy Glenn in the 2nd, & Mark Barron in the 3rd along with their original picks.

- The Rams (who originally took Cordy Glenn) take Alameda Ta'amu in the 2nd instead, who had gone to Miami. Rams sign Ryan Lilja to start at LG.

Also cut Haynesworth from the Rams and put him on the Bucs.

LEAGUE STORYLINES - WEEK 7:

Panthers: Nice bounce-back game and Cam Newton's best performance of the season so far. Next up: a quick re-match with the Saints.

Falcons: The more they lose, the more you wonder if Mike Smith might be coaching elsewhere - as an assistant - next season.

Buccaneers: The more the Bucs bury their heads in the sand and pretend there's nothing wrong with Josh Freeman the worse things are going to get.

Saints: It's not often a team faces the same opponent twice in 3 weeks with a bye in between. They should be prepared for Carolina if nothing else.

49ers: They're playing hard and that's a credit to Jim Harbaugh, but the defense has been a letdown after a fantastic 2011.

Rams: Tough loss to Seattle, but this team is much improved under the new regime.

Cardinals: I wonder how Tyler Bray feels about sand?

Seahawks: Nice win, but the story here are the injuries to Robert Griffin and Chris Polk. No two rookies are as important to their team's playoff hopes as these guys and it's going to hurt losing them for the next 2-3 weeks.

Cowboys: At least we know the potential is there for a solid football team. I'm not sure this staff can bring it out, though, to be honest.

Eagles: Just when you think they're finally headed in the right direction they lay an egg like this.

Redskins: The Steelers are simply a better team, but the 'Skins are still in solid shape in the NFC East.

Giants: Tom Coughlin was once voted the least-liked coach in the NFL by players. Think that's finally caught up with him?

Packers: Starting to look like the offensive juggernaut from last season as they head into their bye.

Bears: Once again, Jay Cutler is playing extremely well. Matt Forte is finally coming around after a slow start.

Lions: They'll need to beat better than the Cardinals to catch up with the Packers and Vikings in the north.

Vikings: Good bounce back win. Adrian Peterson is making his case for MVP.

Patriots: Tom Brady always gives them a chance, but it looks like they've added several keepers on defense in the draft in Devon Still, Jared Crick, and T.J. McDonald.

Jets: A win is a win, but this team is under-performing and has been for most of the season.

Bills: Ryan Fitzpatrick finally shows some signs of life just as the defense decides to take a day off.

Dolphins: A nice (LUCK-y?) mid-season bye for the Dolphins.

Colts: Did we mention Peyton Manning is back?

Texans: They need to keep winning with Manning returning to form because there could be very little room for error from here on out.

Jaguars: I know they just drafted Gabbert last year, but it's time to start thinking about at least bringing in someone to compete with him. He's been awful.

Titans: New QB, same results. Perhaps it's bigger than one position.

Browns: Is it time to consider giving Landry Jones another shot after the bye week?

Steelers: Polamalu returns next week to already strong Steelers team.

Ravens: Another team that has the talent but is under-performing. In what could be Ray Lewis' last year, that's a shame.

Bengals: Trent Richardson is so good he may rush for 100 yards during the Bengals bye.

Raiders: With Carson Palmer and Denarius Moore the Raiders have a legit vertical passing attack for the first time in years.

Chargers: Win over Ravens could be too little/too late for Norv Turner and possibly even A.J. Smith.

Chiefs: I'm just not convinced this team has any real long-term prospects with Matt Cassel at QB.

Broncos: Amazingly they managed to score 21 on a tough Raiders defense, but they still lost. I know they just signed Matt Flynn and spent a 3rd rounder on Ryan Tannehill, but if they're picking top-5 and a top QB prospect is there they almost have to take him.

LEAGUE STORYLINES - WEEK 8:

Panthers: Revenge is sweet, especially just 2 weeks after a loss to the Saints and on Monday Night Football.

Falcons: Running game is still a concern, but enough to beat lowly Broncos at home.

Buccaneers: Josh Freeman has some work to do during bye week.

Saints: Two weeks to prepare for the Panthers and they still couldn't get the job done.

49ers: Beating the Cardinals should be routine for this team, but they let them put up a fight. The talent is there, but for some reason the wins have not been this season.

Rams: HUGE win over the heavily-favored Vikings. The Rams are a bit inconsistent, but could be in the wild card mix with a few more wins like this.

Cardinals: Is it time to seriously consider moving Patrick Peterson to safety? He looks average at best at corner.

Seahawks: Sure, it was Green Bay, but this team badly needs it's two impact rookies back.

Cowboys: A loss to the hated Redskins only makes this season worse than it already was.

Eagles: Bye week blues for Eagles in the midst of losing streak after a promising start.

Redskins: Right back into the mix with win at Dallas. Matt Barkley continues to make a strong case for rookie of the year.

Giants: Tom Coughlin better have his team ready after the bye if he wants to avoid being placed squarely on the hot seat.

Packers: Showdown against Panthers up next.

Bears: The NFC North looks unlikely with the Packers finally playing well, but the Bears are firmly in the mix for a wild card spot.

Lions: That's a big win on the road against the Manning-lead Colts. Keeps Detroit alive for a wild card spot.

Vikings: That's the kind of game this team has to win. They're still in the mix, but they really need to win when they're supposed to.

Patriots: First Brady/Luck duel favors experience over potential.

Jets: Even against a bad team like the Jags, the Jets just don't look right. They won, but this isn't a playoff team.

Bills: Finally, Ryan Fitzpatrick starts to show up. Has Bills in the mix for AFC wild card.

Dolphins: It's not so much the loss, but Dolphins fans had to want to see Andrew Luck play better in his first game against the Pats.

Colts: Manning has a big day, but red zone struggles and defense is ripped by Lions in loss.

Texans: That's as good a showing as you'll see from any team in a loss. The Steelers just look like the better team.

Jaguars: Word is the Jags are considering starting Drew Stanton. That's perhaps the most disappointing news yet this season as it means their "franchise QB" isn't looking like the answer to anything.

Titans: These last few weeks make you wonder if Jake Locker was ever the real problem.

Browns: Landry Jones gets another shot at starting. Hopefully he's put his time on the bench to good use.

Steelers: Defense didn't exactly look great even with Polamalu back, but Big Ben again shows why he's a legit MVP candidate.

Ravens: This team needs to do some serious soul-searching during the bye week.

Bengals: They're not winning pretty, but that's just the type of team they are right now. Need to prove they can beat a good team.

Raiders: Carson Palmer has been re-born under Hue Jackson, but emergence of Denarius Moore has been a huge factor for 1st place Raiders.

Chargers: They can't be inconsistent during their bye week, can they? I wouldn't be so sure.

Chiefs: Tough close loss to Oakland. They need to pull out the close ones if they want to have a shot at the playoffs.

Broncos: Another awful offensive day, another loss, another few degrees added to the hot seat John Fox is currently sitting on. Broncos still aren't out of the Tyler Bray sweepstakes, but need Cardinals to win one first.

LEAGUE STORYLINES - WEEK 9:

Panthers: Tough loss, but it was the Packers at Lambeau.

Falcons: A quality win over a good team in the Raiders. This is the Falcons we expected.

Buccaneers: Josh Freeman's best game of the season, but can he keep it up?

Saints: Defense almost allowed a 'Giant' comeback.

49ers: Bye week comes in the midst of a disappointing season.

Rams: A loss to the Patriots isn't that bad, but you'd like to see the Rams put up more of a fight at home.

Cardinals: Bye week. Could the Cards go 0-16?

Seahawks: If you need a better indication of how important - and good - Robert Griffin and Chris Polk have been for Seattle, this was it.

Cowboys: Jerry Jones doesn't like 10 point home losses on national TV to mediocre teams. A house-cleaning is coming this offseason.

Eagles: Big win to snap losing streak and deal a big blow to division-leading Redskins all at once.

Redskins: That's a game they needed. Now the Eagles are back in the mix.

Giants: Points for the near-comeback, but it's clear the defense misses Perry Fewell. The difference between this year and last is huge.

Packers: Quality win against up & coming Panthers.

Bears: Wild card? With big win over Vikes the Bears are back in the hunt in the NFC North.

Lions: Bye week after a big win, but can they keep that momentum going into next week?

Vikings: Suddenly there are a lot of questions about this team after 2 straight losses.

Patriots: So much for the fear of an upset by the Rams...

Jets: This one stings, but really only tells us what we already knew about the Jets: they're not a playoff contender this year.

Bills: That's three good performances in a row for Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Dolphins: Huge game for Andrew Luck in shutout win over Seahawks, but credit to the defense for outstanding effort.

Colts: Ouch. Just... ouch. That one could knock them out of the playoff hunt.

Texans: Another quality performance in a loss for the offense, but I think MJD is still running free against their defense.

Jaguars: Finally some signs of life from Blaine Gabbert - and a career day for MJD.

Titans: Welcome back, 2009 Chris Johnson.

Browns: Browns hope QB of the future can rebound in second stint as starter after bye.

Steelers: Bengals up next after bye.

Ravens: This team needs to do some serious soul-searching during the bye week.

Bengals: Again, this team needs to show it can win against the better teams. They'll get another crack against the Steelers next week.

Raiders: The loss to the Falcons hurts, but the loss of LT Jared Veldheer for the season hurts even more. He was having a Pro Bowl year.

Chargers: So we got the good Chargers this week. Which team will show up next week?

Chiefs: Looks like another postseason on the couch for players in KC.

Broncos: The Broncos might score more points on their bye week than they will next week against the Chargers. Then again, it is the Chargers.

LEAGUE STORYLINES - WEEK 10:

Panthers: Ho-hum win over winless Cardinals keeps Panthers atop NFC South.

Falcons: The struggles of the running game might be a good thing in the long run for development of the passing game.

Buccaneers: How is it that once Josh Freeman finally comes around the rest of the team gets worse?

Saints: Another close one against, but it's a win.

49ers: They're starting to resemble the 49ers we thought we'd see back in August.

Rams: Bye week comes with Rams still in mix in NFC West.

Cardinals: Another week, another loss. Yawn.

Seahawks: Their two rookie stars return from injury and the Seahawks are right back atop the NFC West after being shut out last week. This just in: Griffin & Polk are pretty good.

Cowboys: That was as ugly a loss as they've had all year.

Eagles: Vick has best game all year in blowout of Giants.

Redskins: Tough way to lose to the Seahawks, but Matt Barkley showed well yet again.

Giants: At this point I think it's all but a done deal that Tom Coughlin will be gone come January.

Packers: That one hurts... and puts the Packers in a tie for 2nd place.

Bears: Big win puts Bears atop NFC North for first time all year.

Lions: What a win against Green Bay. If they can keep that level of play up, the Lions will be a factor.

Vikings: Vikes need to come out of bye week swinging after 2 straight losses.

Patriots: Division match-up against Bills up after bye.

Jets: That loss was embarrassing for a team that had Super Bowl hopes heading into the season.

Bills: Tough loss to a good team. Big game against Pats up next.

Dolphins: Andrew Luck beats Peyton Manning in first matchup.

Colts: Suddenly this team has to be questioning where it's headed. They need major upgrades at several positions.

Texans: Key game at Indy up next after bye week.

Jaguars: After showing some life, the offense is right back to its usual awful ways against the Bears.

Titans: Huge win over the Jets.

Browns: Landry Jones was better, but not good enough to beat Ravens.

Steelers: Tough loss to Bengals, but Steelers will be back.

Ravens: They need all the wins they can get to make it back into the playoff discussion.

Bengals: They finally get a win against a contender. They'll get another shot next week against the Raiders.

Raiders: Pass protection struggles with loss of Jared Veldheer for season.

Chargers: This may be the lowest point of the Norv Turner era. To lose to a pitiful Broncos team like that... ouch.

Chiefs: They always seem to come close, but fall short in the end.

Broncos: Upset over Chargers means little in the scheme of things.

    • The biggest problem we've had with this team since Rivera left is that we have become progressively more timid. Certainly on offense, but mostly on defense.  Football is not a finesse sport. It isn't gentlemanly. You don't want to kill or injure opposing players, but it is essential that you knock them hard enough to intimidate them or at least make them pensive about every move they make.  We used to be those guys. And we haven't been for a very long time.  So, I hope Dan and Dave can bring us back to this. We need it. And a tough, hard hitting team always gives you a shot, even when you might not have the finesse talent on the field.  Yes, it is a passing league, but scared or addled receivers and QBs change the whole game. We need our grit back. We've been a bunch of neutered Persian cats for too long.
    • A couple of notable insights I gained from this:  - Diontae Johnson seems eager to help Bryce progress in his career - Clowney is happy to be back home - Luke is essentially a FO spokesperson - Dan says he would've liked to have added more talent in the draft, and he seems eager to scour the waver wire for other team's cuts. It's easy to read into his statements that this roster rebuild is nowhere near complete in his eyes.
    • Keeping fit is something that many people overlook until they are out of shape and therefore must work harder to reach their physical goals. However, the work put into keeping your body healthy is worth it in both immediate results and long-term benefits. Here are some tips on fitness that can help keep you happy and healthy for years to come. Set up your weightlifting routine around your fitness goals. If you are trying to create large, bulky muscle you'll want to do more weight, but with longer rest periods between sets and between workouts. If you are trying to develop lean muscles with high endurance, you want to lift less weight, but do it more often and with shorter rest times. If you're a person who likes to walk for your daily dose of exercise, make sure you bend your elbows while you're walking. Doing this will make you swing your arms faster and in turn you'll move your legs faster. Not only will you either finish your work out sooner or go further, but you'll burn even more calories while you're doing it!
