Guess What Time It Is? Time To Petition To Change The Bobcats Name Back To Hornets

No, I did not make this petition or have been involved in any way in initiating the movement. I came across this while searching for the Bobcats on twitter today.

While I agree with the reasoning behind it, I feel it is ill-conceived considering I recently read that Stern said the Hornets are about to be sold to a new owner who will have be required by agreement to remain in New Orleans for years to come. If this is the case, the odds of the Hornets name ever coming back to Charlotte went from slim to none.

Regardless, I support the movement for reasons stated in the other thread. At least if there is enough support for the movement, they will re-evaluate the brand situation and we may get a name with a more local feel that will engage even casual fans.

Again, no matter what I'm a Charlotte fan, regardless of the name, but I truly believe this will help our team now and in the future if we re-brand.

Anyway, here are the links...

TBH, as a diehard NC sports fan, I love the Bobcats because they are my team. That doesn't mean I like the name, in fact, I sort of hate it.

But I still love the team wholeheartedly and always will.

That being said, just because people weren't saying anything when we went to the playoffs doesn't mean people suddenly fell in love with them. Part of the problem with this organization is that they've never established themselves as part of the community. The name/brand has a huge part in that.

Winning just cloaks any dissension... Believe me, it was still there, but when you're winning it's cool to circle jerk and pretend you were all in all along.

We need to re-brand.

I'll care when TV coverage of the games is state wide. As of now they are never on TV.

This IMO is characteristic of the problems with this organization man...

I've repeatedly complained about their TV coverage and even did so to the former PR guy Michael Thompson who was very engaged with the fans until they fired him... He said it was up to the fans to call their TV providers and tell them they want the Bobcats themselves.

It seems with this organization they defer to fans for things that they should do themselves (TV) and they assume responsibility for things that fans should be involved in without fan's voices being heard (naming)... And overall it comes off as if we're just nobodies.

With the Panthers JR is calling fans and explaining himself when isn't obligated to, yet with the Bobcats it's like, "give us your money, now go f*ck yourself."

I've went to games, paid money, followed and supported them from day one, bought jerseys, and not once have I felt like my support or opinion mattered.

They alienate the fanbase, and in my opinion, if MJ genuinely and sincerely acknowledged the desire from fans to change the name, I think everything else will fall into place.

Give the fans a name that they can identify with as North Carolinians... That's the first step to making them feel like a part of it.

I tried to follow them a couple years ago, and from what I found, the NBA is reason for them not being on TV more. I read somewhere that the radius for televising home games is only 75 miles with the stadium being the center point.

Yeah, I read that before as well, but that is something separate from what I understand. That has to do with blackouts but from what I've gathered, it is irrelevant so long as the networks feel there is enough demand to show the games.

For instance, some carriers in Raleigh started showing them on an alternate channel and many people in the area can see them if they have SportsSouth, which I don't...

It's just been a jacked up situation altogether.

From everything I've read about it (and that has been A LOT, lol), what it comes down to is the team has to pay the networks to show the games, or the demand from fans must be high enough that the networks recognize it and carry the games themselves. Either way, money has to exchange from one side to the other, and apparently, the Cats are too cheap to pay the fee for more networks to carry the games statewide, so they keep telling the fans to call the providers and ask to see the games...

Good luck getting that to happen in the RDU area with the Canes in town. And for fans like you, in Wilmington, why should you have to ask to see the games when the Cats should want you to see them to promote their product (even though it sucks right now). That's how you build fanbases. They don't care and they don't want to spend money.

And that coincides with this whole naming/branding issue. After MJ purchased the team, he promised to investigate whether there was enough public support to justify renaming it. Yet, I didn't ever get a call, never heard anything about the poll or any surveys going on...

Then, out of nowhere the Observer posts up a report saying the team finished looking into it and determined there wasn't enough support for rebranding. I have yet to meet, talk with, or hear of anyone who participated in that charade. Yet, they think we're dumb enough to not question it. Again, MJ doesn't want to spend any extra money and the fans are alienated.

I have sports south. When I was trying to watch them the game would always be listed in the guide along with pre and post game coverage. The pre-game was always on when it was said to be. As soon as it was over the channel blacked out.

Does anyone know how it is in the triad? I'm moving there soon.

From my understanding it works just fine in the triad. My parents still live in the WS/Kernersville area and my dad can watch all Bobcat games on Sports South.

Yeah man, I'm not sure, hopefully someone else can help you out as far as what they know there. But from all the people I've talked to, the games are available in RDU on either SS or some alternate channel on DTV, IIRC. I think some get it on Charter as well, but someone else with direct knowledge would be better to speak on that.

I'm still on campus at UNC so we get crap student cable.

But again, I do know that the coverage isn't what it could be because the Bobcats won't pay to have the games carried.

    • Many layers my frend- Panthers had a draft recently. They picked 4 defense players. Each player picked 11, 22, 33, 55 as their number. For some players that number match the round or pre-draft round rank, example- Prince was a 3rd rounder and choose 33. Nic was a 1st rounder on some mock drafts and Dan Morgan said they had him as a 1st, he picked 11. Cam Jackson recently switched his number to 55, same as draft and has been telling Dave he wants to be special over and over.  The 44 was to add GOAT feels, thoughts, and more intrigue to this rookie phenomenon. X files was cause it was a great TV show and maybe it was playing when this theory came together.......   I hope this helps!
    • The best things Purdy has are certainly important tools for any QB. His accuracy his timing his decision making etc. I feel like he is a high end Teddy Bridgewater. You can compete and win in the regular season with this especially in a weakened NFC but where his limitations come into focus is when you are trying to contend for a Super Bowl you are going against elite and in some instances generational QB's like Mahomes. And when the time has come for him to go up against Mahomes he simply can't get it done. Now certainly he is not alone in that regard and people will point to another highly regarded QB such as Josh Allen who also cannot get by Mahomes. But the difference I see is Allen is not IMO at a phsyical disadvantage in that matchup whereas Purdy is. And that is with what had been to this point a comically stacked roster around Purdy and let's be clear we cannot understate that regardless of which side of the fence we land on in this debate. Purdy has had a top 5 roster and a top 5 coach. And the last time they went to the Super Bowl they leaned on McCaffrey extremely heavily. Now with what they are having to pay him and divert limited resources elsewhere they face a steep climb to get back to the Super Bowl let alone actually win it.
    • Lonzo mentioned Melo going to the Clippers, but he also said we would draft Dylan Harper and he isn't making it to 4.
