Just finished the first The Name of the Wind, and it did nothing for me. The books after this one may be the best in the history of writing but to read this book to get to it, is torture.

Started listening (on Audible) to The Blade Itself, by Joe Abercrombie. I went into it not expecting much, but am pleasantly surprised. Granted I'm only about 6 hours into it (about a third of the way) but it's very interesting. He really does flesh out his characters without boring you to death...and they are characters that you actually feel one way or another about.

just finished this book yesterday

it took me several months to get through the first 250 pages... although, i wasn't putting forth the effort and time to sit down and read much. this past weekend, i decided to put my head down and actually take some time to read and imo the story got much better rather quickly. the addition of Denna made the story much more interesting as well

like has been said, the beginning was definitely slow, but if i couldn't get past that i never would have gotten into the GoT books either. hoping i get the wise man's fear for christmas

i'm reading the complete collection of clive barker's books of blood. nothing but short stories, pretty good, but i'm most of the way through the 2nd one and i'm getting a little weary of how he goes to the well too many times

other than that every story is different and its emboldened me in my own writing

he does sexual horror very well, but sometimes it borders on absurd, and othertimes it just feels cliche.

anyone else here read much clive barker and can possibly recommend a good book by him?

i like his stuff, but he's starting to reveal himself as a one trick pony in his short stories

i have to admit though, he's one of the most eloquent authors i've read at times, doing things with words that have a very classic feel to them. he's almost poetic at times, without coming across as pretentious or forced. his writing has a very nice natural flow to it that i never expected.

pick something up if you haven't.

i definitely don't just associate barker with tentacle rape anymore like i used to

  • 2 weeks later...

Speaking of reading... I'm working on Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series now... about 3 books into it. Really enjoying it...

For those of you with eReaders or tablets, I found a forum site that has lots and lots of free epubs, PDFs and mobi files... PM me if you want the link.

Still working on the Rapp series...

Just finished 'Consent to Kill', my second book this week... they are hard to put down once you start.

just say no to stephen king

i have for a very long time... haven't read a king book in probably 12 years or so... found the first 3 dark tower books on the sidewalk and decided to give them a shot... the first one was good, the second one started to get a little to "stephen kingy" for me. Maybe i'll pick them up again at some point... but not when i have the whole hitchiker series to get through.

lol. now you know why they were on the sidewalk and not in someone's bookshelf.

pick up some clive barker if you get a chance, and let me know what you think. he's pretty "stephen kingy" but at least he knows how to end a book...even if the end does come 100 pages after the climax.

i'll do that... but i'll warn you... i generally have a hard time with supernatural horror... even lovecraft gets on my nerves most of the time.

You couldn't make me read Lovecraft, mostly because of all the douchbags that fap to him. Not all of Barker's stories are supernatural, and the ones that are happen to be really well done. I've only read one of his books, and it was one that was pretty heavily trashed by fans, but I still enjoyed it. I've read a lot of short stories of his though. The one I'm on now I didn't think I'd like, but its turning out pretty well. Some guy's hands start plotting against him, make him kill his wife, then one hand cuts the other free. The freed hand escapes, makes its way to a prison, and starts freeing other hands. So now in the prison there is a full on riot of disembodied hands running amok, killing everyone. At first I thought it was a stupid, cliched concept, and I considered skipping it. After seeing where its going, I'm kind of glad it didn't.

Some of the poo that he has in his books, like a woman being almost raped by a giant mutant offspring between a ghost and a peacock gets really out there.

But his work is original, which is something I can't say about very many authors.

    • 3rd and Chandler Zavala.......... Id toss in Yohsi or Brano/DJ Johnson if that's what it took to get the trade done.    Bungals need OL B-A-D   Its un-godly to treat a unique HOF level level like Burrow with the OL they have and seems going to this year. People forgot during that bungal SB year, Burrow was sacked like 62 times and I believe had the highest hurries as well. They should be in jail for this, no memeing....
    • I will admit this- Kon doesn't look or play like a 19 year. Much bigger and filled out than I thought he was. Plus initiate the offense during his best quarter and he did make some good passes for FG attempts.   I watch NBA years ago and was a top 3 fantasy yahoo managers for years. Many times a player had like 30 points, it mostly came from one or 2 hot quarters. The others were 5 and 0, so his 16 point game is normal in that regard.    If Ball, bridges, and Miller allow Kon to be apart of the team, just depends on if he clicks of not. Another generic white guy comp popped in my head........he of hornet lore-Gordon Hayward 15 points 5 rebs 3.5 asst Maybe??
