Discussion on potential free agent targets for Carolina.

http://espn.go.com/n...ew-york-rangers

Asked three separate times whether he'd consider playing for the Rangers, Parise was unwavering in his responses.

"No."

Parise seems pretty content on staying with NJ, but we will see when he starts getting $$ tossed in his face.

I'd love to win the Ryan Suter sweepstakes too.

The New York Rangers, stocked with young, promising forwards, still appear to be the most likely fit for Nash, and their desire might have been heightened during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Rangers' 2.15 goals per game in the playoffs was the second-lowest figure of any club to advance past the first round.

Also known to have considerable interest are San Jose, Philadelphia, Toronto and Carolina, apparently a late entry, sources said.

With draft close at hand, asked GM Jim Rutherford again today about likelihood of Canes trading their first-round pick.

Chip Alexander@ice_chip

Rutherford: "That's hard to say. We've done a lot of work in trying to get a real good forward to play with Eric (Staal). ..."

Chip Alexander@ice_chip

Rutherford: "I'd prefer not to (trade the pick). But if the right player was available and the right deal, we would do it."

Chip Alexander@ice_chip

Rutherford said he expects NHL trades next week. "Whether we'll get in on those early trades or not, we're trying to."

The conjecture is that Staal is (a) seeking the kind of top-six ice time he cannot get as a third center behind Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin; and (B) wants to play alongside his brother Eric in Carolina.

Reports also saying that if the Rangers can't get Nash, they may go after Staal.

Other clubs also interested in Nash include Ottawa and Carolina. The Senators want to stay in the mix even though their best hook is now gone. With the Jackets drafting two goalies Saturday, plus trading for Sergei Bobrovsky on Friday, I doubt the Jackets would have interest in either Robin Lehner or Ben Bishop at this point. Still, the Senators can stay in by changing their possible offer. It might surprise some that the Hurricanes are in the mix, especially after picking up Jordan Staal Friday. But a source confirmed that Carolina is intent on staying in the race for Nash.

While you can expect Nash to be dealt sometime in July, it’s harder to tell with Luongo.

Glad to see we are still interested in going after him. That would be a good get.

I'd rather break the bank going after parise than trade for Nash/Ryan at this point. Who would we have to lose to get Nash?? Ruutu, Faulk or Murphy and another d prospect, and a top forward prospect, Rask, Tlusty, or newly acquired Welsh. Price for Nash is just too damn steep. We would be mortgaging our future. We now have prospects, don't want us to clean house...

I think it is all but decided that Parise will not be coming to Carolina.

Columbus isn't going to get what they think they are going to get for Nash. They will either have to significantly lower their asking price, or they will be going into next season with and unhappy Nash.

It honestly makes more sense to me for us to deal some prospects for Bobby Ryan. We have some good, young players in place right now, and Ryan has several good years left in him.

Hearing from multiple sources that the Penguins are very serious about attempting to sign Zach Parise in July.

Pens are looking to trade Paul Martin. Money saved in that deal may give them shot at Parise. Multiple sources believe this is their plan

Pittsburgh with Parise would be an intense offense.

We should have got Paul Martin in the Jordan Staal deal like everyone said we would.

Also we need to pull out of the Nash sweepstakes, there is no need to trade away any more of our valuable players.

Sign a good winger in P.A. Parenteau, a good center in Kyle Wellwood, and a good defenseman in Dennis Wideman and we will be contending next year.

Agree with this the more I think about it.

I don't know if we can get Wideman. I've heard he wants to stay with Washington or go to a contender.

Alexander Semin is reportedly going to test free agency when he becomes an UFA in July. His production has tailed off a bit, but a change of scenery may do him some good.

    • I have said if you out even an average QB into the offense we are averaging 25+ points a game. But that will never happen with Bryce under center.
    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
