Most women I know don't lift heavy enough weight in order to build strength. Which is what I think you're after. Last week at the gym I saw 2 girls doing seated cable rows. They were doing 15 lbs for like 10 reps and only 3 sets. I asked them to try 60 lbs and they got 10 reps easily. Why would you waste your time doing something that will not provide any benefit?

and if you're going to workout like that, why not work until you burn out

nobody ever got big doing 3x10

I see that all the time... more especially people doing movements completely wrong.

It's bad enough that the people don't know what to do, that they don't bother to try and find out, but hell... 80% of the trainers don't know what to do either... or they just don't care.

The last gym I went to had 3 trainers. They all were semi pro body builders. Only place I ever went where every trainer was bigger/stronger than me. Did you ever go to that dungeon gym with me Scott? God that place was sketch but it was so awesome at the same time. I miss it.

Yeah, that was a great gym...  a little dark and dank, but large and nice equipment.

All the Gold's gym trainers at my gym are college aged kids...  there are a few independent trainers in there that are pretty good, but even some of them are idiots.

The way I started doing moves that I couldn't perform initially (chin ups come to mind) is to cheat on the way up and slowly lower myself down with good form.

So for a pull up, I would use a chair or get a jumping start to get to the top of the movement, then slowly lower myself down.

For push ups, similarly you could push up from your knees to get up to the top of the movement, then lift your knees up and slowly lower yourself down.

That's exactly what my husband and I did to achieve pull ups, chins ups etc.

Question:

I keep reading that I should be lifting heavier because it helps burn more fat and that I wont bulk up anymore because I don't have the testosterone.

Anyone here agree or disagree?

Also remember, recently my arms have gained more muscle than I like, so I'm already bigger than I care to be

Well everybody is different Cat... and while I don't think you'll get "big" in terms of what men would be able to do, if you lift heavier, your muscles will grow.

I don't think you necessarily have to lift heavier to burn more fat... I think the idea there is, the more muscle you have (as a ratio) the more your body has to work while resting to keep it fed, so it burns more calories even when you're doing nothing.

As for squats, that is light.  Do you have a bar and weights you can use? You workout at home right?  Going up a lot on your squat weight (and don't forget about deadlifts) will put muscles pretty much everywhere but your arms and chest.

I've worked out with a lady at my gym a few times and she's about my age (40ish) and she has an ass and legs that are marvelous and she squats between 100 and 150 lbs on her sets, deadlifts that too.

i agree with this.   if you really totally seriously dedicate yourself you can end up looking like this:

but that's with a LOT of hard work.   it is a lifestyle in itself.

but you'll never look like this without testosterone and other enhancements such as steroids:

looks like someone photoshopped floppin's arms on that chick.

just do aerobic lifting with your arms and switch your strength training to back, shoulders, core, legs, chest...whatever you think isn't "too big" yet.

    • We keep referring to it as Over drafting him like he was really a first round draft pick. We traded up at the end of the first to get him in a deal with Buffalo so that we could grab him and get an extra year on his contract if needed. At the time that sounded like "If he really soars, we can get that fifth year extension automatically". It really probably meant, "We might need five years to really get him up to starting WR speed."  He was basically a second rounder with a potentially meaningless pick as well to pay for those rights. Still, I think that with him we are on the Kelvin Benjamin bubble right now... will he ever be more than just an athlete? Can he really learn to fight and compete for that ball? Can he learn professional routes? Can he handle the fame and more money than he's ever seen in his life? Can he handle all of the pressure a fanbase puts on him? Tough shoes to fill. Not sure I'd want to be in them. I hope he gets it all together soon. A lot, most draftees, can't. Good luck and God bless to the young man. He's got a lot of work to do in a very unforgiving workplace.
    • This is the #1 reason I defend Bryce. Everyone around him is learning on the job, including him. But hey in 3 years we could have a talented offense that grew up together.
    • Nope. No balling out but he could latch on as a backup elsewhere. I still think he would be the weak link on a ridiculously loaded team that would create problems in the Playoff and while facing other really good teams. His limitations are just to much at this level. I have zero fear of playing him in the future. It's a litmus test for the D, granted the D is pretty awful currently so none needed.
