Feline Training

Other than litterbox, has anyone had much experience with advanced training in cats?

I sit and watch my sons small orange tabby and can't help but admire the tenacity and viciousness in the way she stalks and kills her prey. Usually she will lay her kill out and sort of present it to us for us to admire (I guess). Im wanting to know if there is a way to get a cat to go out and hunt and return with kill in mouth. If so why not apply those same methods to bigger cats for bigger prey.

I read some years ago a training study conducted by the army where they trained and used cats to navigate troops in total darkness. It worked great until the cats began to play with the loose straps hanging off the gear.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for techniques and reading material? I can train a dog to do pretty much what ever I want them to. Im up for the challenge to do the same with an animal as independent as a cat.

They bring you their kill as a contribution towards food supplies. They view us as being inept hunters, so they bring us dead animals as gifts. (Like a mother would bring her kittens food).

Past that, you're on your own.

When i first got Nug, I read up a little bit on it.

Cats are trained the opposite way of dogs apparently, they dont do well with negativity or domination like dogs do.

they are all about positive reinforcement

Nug plays fetch but I think thats just a special thing she does.

As for the training part, ive read it can be very time consuming and there is mass amounts of patience required. So, I just spray her with water when shes on the counter

    • This is what I mean. I am not some huge BY fan. I honestly don't look at QBs the way a lot of you guys do. Right or wrong, I've always looked at them as just another cog in the machine. Didn't want BY or even a trade up for a QB in 2023. We saw in the Super Bowl how important the rest of the team is on any given Sunday. Now... so PFF, who has no reason to prop up BY, says he's first in 2 stat lines and Panthers "fans" are arguing why it's either wrong or a made up stat just to make BY look good. Even though they have multiple stat lines where he's literally last in. Like 32nd in the NFL. Some he's even lower than 32. Take a step back. Try to objectively self analyze. This is just not sensible.  Same thing I see with other teams' fans and their QBs though. We analyze every single throw on every single play. For every other QB, most here are only using highlights to judge. Makes a difference. We saw Stafford miss throws when they played Carolina - both games. We saw Love throw crap up when they played Carolina. We saw Dak miss throws when they played Carolina - and Pickens was putting on a SHOW. We saw Josh Allen win a game with 163 yards passing against Carolina, but if BY does it he's crap and can't pass for 200 yards. Gents... come on.
    • None of us think we're contenders this season but no reason we're doomed to 5 or 6 wins either. Dan has to have another 2025- like draft class and at least 2 key free agent signings. We're not Seattle but they don't win without 5 starters from their last 2 draft classes and Darnold and Lawrence in free agency.  Alas,  we'll have to wait one more season for a QB upgrade.
