Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has come along with the NFL passing game sooner than many expected. After one year with a Division I team, the Auburn Tigers, in 2010, Newton broke several NFL rookie passing records on his way to the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Through two games in his second professional season, Newton has picked up where he left off, throwing for 553 yards. In last Sunday's win over the New Orleans Saints, Newton threw just 20 passes and completed just 14, but his 12.65 yards per attempt average and high completion rate indicate that he's learning how to attain accuracy in a more expansive and explosive passing game.

One of the ways in which offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski is facilitating this is through the frequent and effective use of advanced route concepts. Rather than just go with two-wide sets or tight twins, "Chud" is formulating an offense that looks a lot like what former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator and current Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt put together for Ben Roethlisberger in his early NFL seasons. The comparison is apt -- like Big Ben, Newton is tough in the pocket, effectively mobile when he scrambles, and has a howitzer for an arm.

      Damn Logan Jones had a good day too. Was high on him coming in as he anchored that top Iowa line and is a fire plug inside. He's gonna be 25 to start the season so maybe he slips into the 4th but I doubt it, even if C isn't a premium position. His play on the field was top notch and the combine boosted it again. Arm length is about the only knock. But guy is plug and play at C.   This is a loaded class at C. Need to grab one.

      Bryce will be permanently replaced by a draft pick. There's not another Sam Darnold out there to save us. Tepper is going to see this throw because he dumped Mayfield and Darnold too soon. He's going to give it 1 more year before he will sign off on dumping another 1st round pick qb. Thats the cold hard truth of it. It doesn't mean we can't get younger and much better at the backup position.

      Maybe I should have used a different word and saved that for me. I want someone that has something impressive about them.  Someone that has potential to supplant a guy who is producing 25th best type of numbers. 22nd, 27th all that bottom third neighborhood.  I don’t know where that will come from it just can’t be from even a 4th round pick this year IMO. Unless FA is crazy productive.    I’ll give Bryce a better than bottom rating for his playoff game. Well above low twenties. But at least half of his games were bottom third level. Probably 2/3 to 3/4 of them were.
