Jarvis Jones OLB, UGA

I believe Jarvis Jones OLB, UGA deserves his own thread on here. I have talked to 1-2 person on here this week and it seems like I'm not that crazy about the possibility of us drafting this kid next year. I have thought about this kid for a couple months now, but like many many of the huddlers on here it just sounded crazy to even think about drafting another lb after how we just took Kuechly at no.9 this year. The thing is a lot of us saw that our LB position was our strongest strength on the team. Well that was before the season started. Funny how things can change so quick now going into week 7.

Many of us hasn't even care about wondering who Jarvis Jones is bc we think that we have a log jam a lb. We should care. Why? Heres why:

(1) Beason hasnt been the same ol' Beason we used to know. Missing a lot of tackles and getting beat in coverage.

(2) Anderson has been a productive lb for us for a couple of years now, but hes not special. He lacks the ability to drop back in coverage and rushing the qb. He makes a lot of tackles but he doesnt make enough plays down hill (TFL).

(3) Thomas Davis is playing from his 3rd ACL in three years and every Sunday I'm just crossing my fingers and toes that he doesnt pop his 4th. And TD is looking more like a liability now.

(4) I have been strict on Kuechly's plays from the OLB spot, but the kid is a beast in the middle. We have our Mike for the next 8 years. Kuechly is the only secure player at the LB position.

(5) We dont wanna see Phillips or Senn getting any possible playing time at any lb spot but on ST. Anyone who thinks any of those two guys can step in and make plays for us, I wanna know what you're smoking bc I need some too.

I brought up Jarvis Jones' name bc like I have mentioned it to other people, somehow if we land a top 5 pick and Jones is still on that board, man all of a sudden the plan going into the draft dramatically changes. OLB is not a need, but "pass rusher" is, and that's exactly who Jones is; a pass rusher and a real good one. Even if one of the two DTs (Star or Hankins; people think DTs is a harder position to groom) is still on the board, I cant see why we could pass up on Jones. Jones is possibly and imo the best pure pass rusher in this draft. Hes in the same mold as Von Miller and many scouts believe he can be a legit 43 OLB. "Far from just a pass rusher, Jones proved capable of playing the run as well as dropping back into coverage, demonstrating the combination of instincts, passion and physicality to catch the attention of scouts despite the fact that 2011 was his first season as a starter." (CBS) He already have an amazing 5.5 sacks in 5 games and 13.5 sacks a season ago.

I know its a lot of stuffs, but here's how I think drafting Jones can come in play:

We can go after a DT (Alan Branch, Sopoaga, Henry Melton, Randy Starks, Glen Dorsey, Jason Jones) and possibly a CB (Cason or Sean Smith; affordable) in Free Agency which leaves us with FS and WR as our other biggest needs through the draft. Maybe we can find someone to take either Beason or Anderson off our hands (Cap) and with moving Wharton's cap to next year I really think we should have enough money to spend on both a DT and CB in FA to where taking a BPA in Jones is a huge possiblity in the first round next year.

A lot of BLAH BLAH BLAH but something to think about.

I like him but I don't at the same time. The gamecocks with a very touchy offensive line to say the least completely shut him down in columbia. I know everyone can have a bad game but lord it was awful. I can't wait to see him at the combine though if he shows out that'd be pretty cool especially after what he went through at Southern Cal.

I havent seen the game vs USC, but it was probably just a bad day. Im sure he will get back on track. The kid is special and talented. Its only his 2nd year as a starter.

He's an older kid, he transferred from USC after our doctors wouldn't clear him for contact...

I don't know about him...if were in a position to take him then well have to have a plan on how to use him like Denver did with Von Miller

Jones is pretty much a Von Miller 2.0 whose forte is rushing the QB but has the athleticism to drop back in coverage and is a solid tackler. if we take him we're going to use him the same way as Denver with Miller.

Jones is a lot better than Bruce Irvin. If Irvin can thrive in Seattle 43 as a pass rusher only, Jones will have a bigger impact up to Miller's level.

I guess he would fit the BPA mold if he's available....I'd like the FO for once to address some needs with free agency so we don't have to completely build through the draft....like people you mentioned in other threads....Sean smith, Randy Starks, Alan branch, Henry Melton....dont know any safeties available

Yeah I think players like Melton, Branch, Starks (DT) and Sean Smith, Antoine Cason (CB) should be affordable who wouldn't brake the bank.

The top 2 Safties going into FA are Golshon and Kenny Phillips (SS) who I think could be a FS or maybe we could move Godfrey back to FS. Only thing is we may not be able to afford them. Who we could possibly afford is Patrick Chung, but gah damn do Chung suck. He's one of the main reason why Pats D sucks so bad.

I hated the idea of trading Beason but now if we could find someone to just give us a 3rd and save us some caps, it'd be awesome. It'll leave us with a lot of room to work with in FA.

What I hate, is how cheap we've been in FA in the past few years. Passed up on players like Carlos Rogers in two straight years and Red Bryant this year. I'd like for us to even look at the possibility of bringing in Freeney next year.

If we switch to the 3-4 full time, then it's a solid pick. I am not sure he'd be best utilized if we are sticking with a 4-3 base.

Like is mentioned above if Miller and Bruce Irvin can thrive in a 43, Jones has a legit shot at being an impact player in a 43 also.

Cleveland is a 43 D team that a lot of people sees having a real shot at taking Jones.

    • Okay so he and we are acknowledging that Bryce is still making mistakes and not recognizing basic coverages in his third season. So what does he do to prepare? Remember before the draft the entire hype around him revolved around not only his ability to improvise when the play breaks down on the field but his dedication to preparation off the field in the film room. So if all of this is happening and his footwork is still anywhere between mediocre and horrific in any given play what is he doing in the offseason and in between games? This and his elite processing was supposed to be his key selling point. Then leadership was the sprinkle on top and let's be honest that's lacking at best too. So what is it that Bryce Young excels at in any phase of the game right now?....
    • Ironically enough what I think will ultimately do Bryce in/will be why he won’t make it in the league won’t be his size concerns, but his mental makeup.   He is a historical outlier in size and due to that has smaller and stricter windows, but he *has* shown he can play, but only when it doesn’t matter. The best football we’ve seen from Bryce was that preseason Buffalo drive and then down the stretch last year after we were already eliminated   Remember the look on JJs face last night after that TD pass to Jones towards the end of the game? Dude looked like a straight killer. That’s the face of a dude that’s locked the fug in, completely ignoring any and all noise. Reminded me of prime Cams infamous nod prior to orchestrating a game winning drive right after seeing the Saints take the lead.  Probably hyperbolic but that shot convinced me JJ will be a dude for the Vikings. Yes they have a great staff but that kind of mentality isn’t something that’s taught.    to succeed as a young QB in this league you need some level of that coldness/killer mentality in you to push through the adversity that will inevitably come when you have a bad game, throw a pick 6, or your line gets blown up.    i don’t see any of that in Bryce. I want to be wrong, and hope someone can quote this post with a “wow that aged like milk!” someday, but I don’t think it’s happening.     if Bryce had that mentality in him, I honestly think he could play and work through it, but I just don’t think he does
