Why is Newton so good on 1st down and so bad on 2nd and 3rd ?

Cam Newton passing completion percentage by down:

1st 71.1%

2nd 53.7%

3rd 43.6%...this stat is not sortable, but I have looked at all the bad quarterbacks who have played this season and Newton is by far the worst on 3rd down. Worse than Wilson, Cassell, Weedon, Tannehill, Even Blaine Gabbert is hands down better on 3rd down than Newton.

And, of course, as a result, the Panthers rank dead last in the entire NFL in 3rd down conversions.

Now I know the legions of Cam Newton worshippers will call me an idiot and say that these numbers are Ron Rivera's fault...or Chud's fault...or the defense's fault...LOL...but that assertion just does not stand up to scrutiny. Actually they tell a very different story.

When Chud can open his playbook on 1st down Newton can be very good. When it becomes an obvious passing situation Newton suddenly becomes very bad.

I know, I know. Newton is bad on 3rd downs because he is put in long yardage situations because of Chud and Rivera's stupid read option and otherwise terrible play calling.

Here is the problem, though: Newton's completion percentage on 3rd down and 3-7 yards to go is 38.5%. Sorry, sports fans, those ares very manageable distance. And that completion % stinks. It stinks really badly. And there is only one person you can hang it on: His name is Cameron Newton.

Here is an item for your suggestion box, Cam: play better on 3rd down. Play lots better on 3rd down. Because right now you are the worst QB in the league in obvious passing situations.

Here's an idea for you...get off NFL.com searching for new ways to keep pushing the same agenda. Go back and watch the game again instead. Make some notes about situational football. Point out the exact situations to support your argument.

Then maybe we'll listen to you. Until then, you're just another troll with an agenda.

    • People say the NIL ot transfer portal is killing college football, which is demonstrably false. This is the poo that has effectively killed ALL college sports. The TV contract whoring that has caused the complete destruction of regional conferences.
    • Easily so. 1 "National Championship", 11 conference titles. UNC can boast 0 and 7. Maryland is less so since they have left the ACC and will likely remain depressed for the remainder of their existence before the Big Ten collapses.  I agree about the ACC and its football history but truthfully, it is becoming harder for the ACC to compete in the super conference era with the extreme amounts of money it takes to just stay competitive, much less excel.  UNC is very odd case. On the surface, plenty of money to spend to attempt to become a relevant football program but then you spend it on....Bill Belichick??? That's....stupid.
    • Yeah, the recent interview in front of his locker…. if you listen, Hunter regurgitates what Canales said and does it from Canales’ perspective.  Coach said,  coach thought, Coach wanted.  Every year I explain my position that coaches are not truthful people when it comes to explaining decisions and what is going on….they aren’t in the business of letting us know what is going on behind the scenes.   Nothing ever supported what Dave was selling.  He saw something apparently no one covering the team every single day saw.  He kept his boy and had to have a reason to explain it at the end of the day….and saying Moore was better would not sell Hunter never had said he believed such is what I am saying.  That was Dave BSing his roster decisions.  What coaches do.  Hunter doesn’t play OL.  Odds are with his select slot work and his role….he is better prepared than our lineman for week 1.
