Keenan Allen game tape thread

He looks like he has good hands, but is not particularly fast, nor is he the most effective deep threat. I only watched two of the above videos, but it looks like he was primarily used as a short yardage guy.

I think I would rather have Austin if I am getting a WR that is most effective in underneath stuff and not a great deep threat.

keenan "underneath" allen

thats his new name after watching his videos. needs to work on balance and hold the ball better to prevent fumbles. also sometimes jump for no reason to catch easy passes. not much of a deep threat and really doesnt make alot of open field plays, or make other guys miss.

could be decent in the nfl, but just does not look like the "clear cut number 1 superstar wideout" that hes made out to be, when i watch him on tape.

^^lol i like him its just that i thought he would be a different guy when i heard about him being the best wr from several scouts.

ummm, i thought i would be seeing an aj green type of guy. i seen most his snaps come from the slot not on the outside too....

i know his qb is bad but patton does not have a top rated qb either and he still went deep more than keenan allen and made just as many open field plays.

in august/september patton avg 16.4 yards per catch.......in that same period allen only avg 11.2....matter of fact in no period during the year did he avg more than 12 yards per catch.

so i can understand why some call him a possession receiver.

personally i would not take any wr in this draft at 14.

25th and down in the 1st round would be the time to target a wr to me.

^ of course and the panthers need someone who can run deep routes.........allen does not fit that BASED ON HIS STATS.

patton also goes over the middle plenty of times.

hey im not knocking slots.....chris carter was great.

dck since you say keenan allen compares to dez bryant and jordy nelson ill check how his stats compare against those guys while in college..........

he can run deep routes, but just wasnt asked to a lot at Cal.and when he did the throw was not accurate enough for him to catch the ball. they wanted him to have the ball in his hands asap.

okay, still the bad qb excuse...but okay...ill rest that.

so now on the comparison to nelson and bryant. they had better avg per catch stats. nelson had 14.9 while bryant had about a 17.0 avg.

on tape both of those guys played faster(game speed) than allen and dez jumped for balls ways more...but they were deep balls.

really cant say much else since you keep saying his play was limited from his qb. he does however lhave the same body type as bryant though....

also i dont know his measureables since he didnt participate in the combine, so i cant compare that either.

like i said im not saying hes gonna be a bust, he just does not excite me. patterson is exciting but he needs a lot of coaching.

one thing i do like about allen is that he is a sure handed receiver and out of all his tape i like the one against stanford the most.lol

Hey dck have you heard anything about his pcl injury? Dont wanna draft a guy that ends up hurt all the time. Just wanna know how serious it is.....

I've gotta back DCK up. Cals QB was awful last year. The only reason he was even on scholarship was because it was the only way to get Allen to Berkeley. Not saying I think Allen is going to be a star because there are flaws in his game, but Maynard (his half brother) really didn't help him out at all....

    • Bryce has improved each season, fwiw, statistically.  His slope is rising.  (Not to say I am high on him--I am not, but I have not given up on him--nor have I given up on XL, but damn he pisses me off)  CJ's slope is descending.   I was never a Penix fan.  Never, I say!
    • That is definitely the down side of all this--on paper, I would offer up a second rounder for him if he passed my interviews.  He has already gone through (seriously?) a treatment program for gambling addiction.  I just see him as a first round talent that we could get with a second rounder.  If I liked Bryce and felt good about paying him $50m per, I would not touch Sorsby.  If Bryce regresses or stays the same--he is going to expect to be paid.  Sorsby, in my view, has a better long-term future as an NFL QB.  He is big, mobile, has good arm strength, and makes wise decisions (on the field) with the football.  He is a great dual threat, RPO QB.   I think he is a perfect solution for the backup qb position and insurance for Bryce should he get injured or suck.  Pickett?  King?  yikes.
    • Hard to say--they are very unpredictable--this article came out last night---after our comments:  (ESPN)   How has the NFL approached NCAA players with gambling violations in the past? David Purdum, sports betting reporter: Quarterback Hunter Dekkers and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte were found to have committed gambling violations while playing college football, and both were allowed to pursue NFL careers. Dekkers was the projected starting quarterback at Iowa State but was ruled ineligible ahead of the 2023 season after an investigation found he had bet on at least one game involving the Cyclones (among other wagers that violated NCAA bylaws). The bet was just $15 on Iowa State to beat Oklahoma State in a 2021 game in which he did not play, but it led to the end of his Division I career. He played one season at Iowa Western Community College in 2024 before signing with the Saints as an undrafted free agent, and he spent last season on the practice squad. Boutte was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in January 2024 on charges of underage betting while at LSU. The arrest came roughly eight months after he had been drafted in Round 6 by the Patriots, and the charges were ultimately dropped. According to police, Boutte placed more than 8,900 wagers from April 2022 to May 2023, including betting on at least 17 college football games -- at least six of which involved LSU during that span. The NFL did not discipline Boutte.
