Jordan Gross vs Jake Long

Yet another example of how screwed up our cap situation is. Another "big" FA signs for less, some would say significantly so, than what was anticipated and we have have more subtractions than additions because we have no money to spend.

Gross has been an issue of contention here recently because it's been reported that he was asked to restructure and has not as of yet - leaving us strapped for cash in regards to adding FAs. Some Huddlers say he has the right to hold onto as much money as possible nearing the end of his career, while others argue that he should be the "team guy" he claims to be and reduce his salary to help us build with key free agent signings.

So, how do you feel now knowing that Jake Long, the premiere name in UFA offensive tackles, at 27-years old, just signed for 4 years and $36-million dollars (max), while Gross whose production has declined over recent years is making $11.7 mil this year? Reports say Long's contract "can be worth up to" $36 million, so it can be inferred his per year base is less than $9 mil.

I know even if Gross was cut that he wouldn't have cleared enough space alone to sign Long, but those numbers are certainly worth a look.

In spite of his injuries, Long is still viewed as a solid prospect. He only missed 2 games in his career prior to last year's triceps injury. To my knowledge, he was solid before last year, and again, he still has some room for growth at 27.

It's just disappointing knowing that Gross is hardlining about his current salary (otherwise it would already be done and we would've had a chance at the first tier of FAs) considering his production doesn't justify it. AT ALL. Long was expected to sign for more than what he did, and he's STILL making less than Gross. We could've done a lot with that money and fixed the holes we currently have.

True, but maybe they just like the tackles in the draft more than Jake Long coming off a down year. Ovepaying a good, but not transcendent tackle is how we ended up sitting here bitching about Gross' cap figure. Maybe they don't want to go through that again.

So, we're taking a Tackle in the Draft?

Why not cut Gross now anyway if you know we're aiming at a Tackle in the Draft?

It's not certain, but I think it's a possibility. It's a great draft for O-line (and DT, so it's all coming up us). And you need two tackles so I would like to keep Gross and get another one as no one else on our roster has done a great job filling the RT spot.

If Bell doesn't go out and tear an ACL, MCL, or any ligament in his body, he'll still be the starting RT for thethe next two years.

I just don't see an OT in the first two rounds. It's a possibility but it probably won't happen. We have two gaping holes at DT, FS, CB, WR, and RG. We haven't address anything in FA. I just don't see Gettleman addressing an OT in the 1st or 2nd.

Eh, I haven't been crazy about Bell's play the last 2 seasons, though admittedly he could improve, but I would like us to bring in another great talent to solidify the right side of the line for now, and then he can step in for Gross in a season or two. I don't really see WR as much as a need, maybe just a nice addition if a good player is there. I agree that DT, FS, CB, and RG are all up there with tackle as our biggest needs, so I think it just depends on who they have rated highest on the board when we pick.

I would personally like Chance Warmack to fall to us, but we'll see what happens. But I think OT makes a lot of sense if the right player is there when we pick.

I think as long a drought we've been in FA, we could probably cross both OT and OG off our needed list. Gettleman will bring in at least two OL through FA before the season begins. Even if Warmack is there, I wouldn't know if he would take him at 14.

I see DT/WR going 1 and 2, and a FS in the 4th.

At least get the same figures. Gross deal is 6 years and $60M, so if you are going to compare with Longs $9M, Gross figure is $10m a year.

Long is on a decline and hurt. So I would say he is more over payed at $9M than Gross is at $10M.

We are paying a very solid LT $10M instead of the $6M pff had him graded at. But it is not like we could cut Gross and just pick any $6M guy and get the same performance. LT is a position you have to live with what is available as the next man up might very well get your QB killed.

Our main problem is that Hurney thought that applied to any position includung the one in which you can find a decent replacment in the local mall...twice....

    • Yeah, I could jump right into the unbelievable Bryce debate now that some people are trying to flip the script because Bryce Young has, at most, a handful of decent games as a pro, but that's going to work itself out. Suffice it to say that I've seen better QBs (with an s) in a Panthers uniform, and I've certainly seen better QBs be drafted while we're playing around with Bryce, one of them who beat the crap out of us already this season... Let's forget about Bryce (and his markedly underwhelming play since he's been here); I think that most sane fans will agree that drafting him was an error, but it happens. Sure, it doesn't happen to the tune of King's ransom---including your main receiver---but it happens. You bet, you lose. Speaking of receivers...and betting and losing... Oh, man, we drafted Xavier Legette. Yes, just like with Bryce, I've entered "the dark side." Some Huddlers were telling us from the beginning, and they were right. But, I'm not apologizing for waiting to see what a guy's got before making my decision on him. X was a one-year wonder at South Carolina who parlayed some really nice production that season, a great personality and thick country accent, into becoming a first round pick (but only in Carolina). For Dan Morgan and company, He was a big swing that has turned into a big whiff (and I can still feel the ill breeze from that one). Sh¡t happens, right? Well, not so fast. Ladd McConkey was the decidedly more polished receiver who was literally ready to hit the ground running as soon as stepping onto the field as a pro. Ladd was never the biggest guy (though not the smallest), but he was the guy that could run routes, always seemed to get open---no question---and had the same speed as X, but with legit quickness and nuanced shake and bake. But Dan chose the project. He chose the guy where the game speed looks more like a tractor trailer than a 5.0 mustang. Look, I've supported X (just like Bryce) many many a day, but no more. Now I'm not saying that I won't root for the guy. Just like with Bryce, he seems like a great kid. But as far as giving excuses for the kid, and, perhaps more importantly, waiting for some miraculous breakout, I'm done with that. I've seen enough. You don't draft a project for a project. And yes, Bryce had proven to be a project after his first season. In my mind, drafting a supposedly number one receiver that needs lots of development for a starting quarterback that needs immediate help to try and further his development is not going to lead to good things. Pick the surest guy. Or at least pick the one who appears to be the surest guy, because picking can be tricky... especially when you're too busy tricking yourself.
    • Winning ain't gonna make my eyes lie to me. Context matters, and it will always matter in the game of football.
    • That TD pass to Legette against Miami. Elite. The play where Bryce rolls right to buy time until Tet can reverse field.  Bryce pumps as multiple defenders close in.  He barely gets it away before he takes a big time hit.  Beautiful off platform throw and great catch by Tet.   The second TD to Tet against Dallas where Bryce dips and turns his shoulder in to evade the pass rusher.  Resets and finds Tet in the end zone. Dude embodies the Keep Pounding mantra.
