Future Cap Space? Keeping our Core

Even if Gettis puts up those numbers, he wont get a large contract with one good year. Even if LaFell has a big year, he wont demand a large contract. And most of the people you mentioned are gone after this season anyhow.

So we should be good then.

If he stays healthy all season and puts up those numbers, some team is gonna take a chance and offer him a good chunk of money.  Just look at the Kruger and Ellerbe deals: a pretty big payday for essentially just one year of production.  Not to mention QBs with just a few GAMES of production in the past like Flynn and Kolb who got paid in FA.  Gettis' injury concerns might turn some teams away, but there'll be a desperate team with a lot of cap space who would try to sign him for good money after a solid season.

This is all a big IF...but if Gettis blows up this season that would really annoy me if we have to let him walk in FA after wasting his talents for 2 years on the IR.

Agreed.

Not so sure Hurney thought beyond the current year with regard to cap management. Maybe he tried to, but just wasn't very good at it.

I had a theory on that, and honestly while he did overspend, he gave '11-13 as a "window" of sorts, and then '14 is when you make all the decisions. Not that it's right, or wrong, but for the most part, I can understand treading water at certain positions this year to see what can be done next year.

If Rivera's here, he can build his secondary of what worked this year.  if someone else is here, they start over.  Same at WR.  Same at most positions, really - LB, RB.

From here on, it's somewhat more merit based...you pick who is out there for building blocks that are already being paid, and you dump the rest.

I think Hardy's odd nature hasn't endeared him to JR the way others have gotten a bump for his opinion - from visiting Deshaun Foster in the hospital to promptly paying most of the people who were at the early '09 mountain retreat (excluding Peppers), to the spending spree of '11.  I think Gettleman's more rational, and without JR insisting for Hardy to be paid at all costs, it'll hopefully lead to a good, equitable contract.  FWIW, I don't mind paying him up to $10 mil a year. I think he's a fantastic talent, and no, I don't find it weird to spend on two DEs anymore than drafting two DT.  I'm OK with both, personally.

    • I wanted someone to hire him so we got the picks, but I'm also not upset that he'll now be back. I genuinely don't understand why so many fans on here dislike him so much.  No, he's not perfect and made some mistakes this year, especially at the end of the playoff game and going so soft in coverage on the final drive. But considering this place torched him all offseason for us having the "worst defense in NFL history" last year.  Said in the whole pre-draft process how we had to go defense in round 1 because of it and then complained the rest of the offseason that we didn't do enough to improve the defensive roster. How do people say all that about the defense and then complain when he turned that same unit into a pretty respectable defense this year.  They were really the only reason we were in a lot of games for most of the season, as the middle part of the season they really stepped up and were playing like one of the better defenses in the league. I don't see any reason we can't improve even more next year if we spend another offseason focusing on adding pieces on that side of the ball, which we should be able to do with our draft picks and cap space.
    • And they are perfect during the month of February! The fact they're 11th in the league now, but best in the league since Dec 6 tells you everything you need to know.
