Marc-Andre Bergeron May Return To Canes

Recommended Posts

Marc-Andre Bergeron, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in July, may return to Carolina if his salary expectations are reasonable.

Canes GM Jim Rutherford, who acquired Bergeron from Tampa in March, would like to have him back. Bergeron had a calming influence on the Hurricane power play and as long as his contract demands are modest, his chances of playing in Carolina are pretty good. That said, it will be a late signing if he returns. Bergeron, along with fellow UFAs Dan Ellis and Joe Corvo are expected to test the free agent market, at least initially.

Right now the defenseman that are under contract are Justin Faulk, Joni Pitkanen, Tim Gleason, Jay Harrison, and Jamie McBain. The un-restricted free agents are Joe Corvo, Bobby Sanguinetti, and Marc-Andre Bergeron.

The ideal situation would be to let Corvo and Sanguinetti walk, trade McBain for a draft pick and a third line winger, call up Ryan Murphy, and re-sign Bergeron to be our seventh defenseman...

Imagine this line-up...

Justin Faulk - Tim Gleason
UFA (Mark Streit/Ron Hainsey) - Joni Pitkanen
Ryan Murphy - Jay Harrison
Marc-Andre Bergeron

That defense is way better than the one we were putting on the ice last year.
