Which came first. The commercial or the Music?

Has anyone noticed this?  Commercials using new music?

Used to be commercials used "oldies" or had their own jingle.

Barry Manilow was the "King of Jingles" before turning to music.

State Farm Insurance (Like A Good Neighbor)

Stuck On Me (Band-Aid Brand)

Stridex

Feelin' Free (Pepsi-Cola)

The Most Original Soft Drink Ever (Dr. Pepper)

McDonald's (You Deserve A Break Today)

And there were more.

Now it seems that commercials are using current songs.  Which leads me to ask.  which came first.  The hit song or the commercial?

We have:

We are Young-Fun (Chevy Sonic)

Can't Hold Us - Macklemore (Office formerly Hotmail)

Radioactive - Image Dragons (USA TV show Graceland)

I know they're others out there, I just don't know the song.  Yet.

[That would be a job I could enjoy.  Listening to music all day and trying to pair it up with a commercial/product!]

Of course, this seems to be a throwback when an Ad exec paired a unknown song by an unknown group back in the early 70's.  He figured that instead of teaching the 'World to Sing', why not 'But it a Coke?'  The ad is generally considered the greatest commercial in advertising.  (And launched a group called "The Hillside Singers" into the 'One Hit Wonders' category, after the song went "viral".)

Is the song popular because of the commercial?  Or is the commercial popular due to the song?

Good obvservation. I think the trend for new music came from those Ipod commercials.

Funny you bring this up because I have a peculiar ear when it comes to music. In 2002 I heard a song for an Acura commerical. It was a couple driving thru Palm Springs and the song and the imagery just took me there. Very much a chill song.

I searched and searched and finally found the cd. Which I still have. It had all kinds of bossa nova and samba type songs.

Fast forward many years and Pandora became my vehicle to "new" music. I hear that song from that Acura commerical and I became a huge fan of the artist, Nicola Conte.

I had a cousin who passed a couple of years ago and that was his job. To write jingles. I was like 23 or so and it was the one time I can remember meeting him as an adult and I told him it would be cool to get into advertising. He just gave me an emphatic please do not go into that world. Interesting guy.

Good topic.

I noticed that too, that commercials are making songs these days.

For example, Fun was nothing before commercials started using their stuff.

I wouldn't say nothing. That song was well played out by the time it was on the Super Bowl commercial.

How could I forget the Mitsubishi commercial with Dirty Vegas! (Days go by)  I bought their CD because of that and I don't even like techno.

All I remember about that commercial is the Dave Chappelle version.

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
