Horncats interested in Al Jefferson

If they offer him 4yrs/12mil he's going to Dallas... He didn't accept a $60 million dollar contract from us... it's clear that he doesn't want to be in Charlotte.

He's wanting the same deal from Dallas as well from the reports, he didn't turn the deal down and didn't hate the idea of playing in Charlotte. Counting no income tax, the deal would have to be around 13.5 million a season to be around the Bobcats offer. He's got to the 10th before a deal would be able to get approved.

Edit: Oh and the meeting went really well, he's just waiting on D12 to make his move.

I guarantee you that he will accept a lesser deal to be on a better team. Jefferson has never been to the playoffs in his career and he might want that to change. Don't get your hopes up Kitten fans, and I know he has til the 10th... I'm the one that has told everyone that, it still doesn't mean a deal can't be agreed upon.

I couldn't care less, I don't want the team to sign him. That being said everything I'm reading is that the meeting went really well and he was in Charlotte for 2 days meeting with the Bobcats. It's also being reported that he doesn't want to take a paycut so he wants his 15 million a season. The report I read was saying that he was waiting on D12 and the Mavs to see if he went there, if not he wants to see if the Mavs offer him the same amount of money as Charlotte.

I'd love to know where you are hearing that the meeting went well... It can't possibly be from that sports whispers twitter account that has less than 1,800 followers.

Not at all, for one he was in Charlotte for 48 hours. Most of that meeting with the Bobcats.

You don't waste 48 hours of your time for something your not seriously considering.

As well, no one knows if the Mavericks are even interested in Jefferson or if they are willing to offer similar money for him.

It's down to the Bobcats and Mavericks for Jefferson.

I'll buy his plane ticket to Dallas if he crosses them.

It's basically down to this.

The Bobcats have signed Al Jefferson pending a Dallas Mavericks offer that is similar. No one knows if they are interested in signing Jefferson or not.  "Now the Mavs do have a little bit of leeway in the money department because of not having an income tax."

I noted yesterday that I believed Jefferson would be asking for a deal around $60-65mil over 4-5 years, and unfortunately, it appears as if I may have been correct.

Jefferson definitely makes Charlotte a better team immediately — probably somewhere in the 5-10 win range better, but this is a lot of money to a player who basically only plays on one end of the floor. Look, the guy isn’t incompetent defensively, but the effort isn’t there consistently and he’s not quick moving laterally, forcing him to get burned on PnR situations.

So, it sounds like the Bobcats made an offer to Al Jefferson today + he’s not completely turned off to the idea of playing in Charlotte. That being said, if Jefferson can play somewhere like Dallas and win now, while also making same $ Charlotte is offering (whatever that is) then he’ll clearly take that route.

See, I don't think that is necessarily true. Al Jefferson has all the leverage because the Bobcats offered him a 4yr/60m contract, which is exactly what he wants...

If the Mavericks don't land Howard, Jefferson can go to Cuban and say look MJ is offering me a 4yr/60m contract; if you don't come close to that or match it... I'll sign with Charlotte.

So Cuban gives Jefferson a 4yr/12.8m contract and since Jefferson wants to win, he signs with Dallas.

It's a very simple concept that many money driven players use.

I agree with both of you guys. I think there is a real possibility that he signs here. But I also agree that his agent is going to be shopping our deal to at least the Mavs and maybe Houston.

The question is two fold. Are those teams even interested and will they pay the same or close to what we are offering?

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
