What do you all think about the umps overturning the call last night?  I know it was the right call - that's not the question I'm asking.  Seems like an odd time for them to meet to overturn a call - in the World Series?!?  There have been so many bad calls over the years and MLB fans have been taught to live with the "human element", why change that now before any proper protocol is formally introduced?

Because MLB wants Boston to win the series, it's the perfect story with that and the Boston marathon thing.  They were already running segments before the game on it, and in the field is "B Strong".   Just like when the Saints were hand-held to the Super Bowl that year for Katrina, etc.

 

Conspiracy theories totally, but it wouldn't surprise me lol.

While I agree that MLB probably does want Boston to win (more fans=more revenue for them), there is a 0% possibility that affected the call. You have to think professional umpires don't like being criticized by the media already more than they are. If that ump missed the call, and Boston lost that game, and lost the series because of it, he would be receiving death threats, which no umpire would want, so it makes sense for them to try and get it right for even personal reasons.

 

In terms of reversing the call, we have started to see that over the years from MLB. Instant replay has changed the game a bit, and umpires have changed calls before after they reviewed with each other. It's not like it was a first time thing that only happened in the World Series. It was a bad call, and it got changed. Anybody complaining about that shouldn't watch sports if they don't want the right call to happen.

In case you didn't read my OP - we get that it was the right call.  I, however, can't remember very many occasions where a call was overturned in that kind of situation especially with that significance.  

 

Why wasn't Jim Joyce's call when he ruined that perfect game for the Tiger's pitcher overturned if it happens so frequently.

Or the blown infield fly call last year during the Braves game.  It was one of the worst calls I've ever seen and no one cared about fixing it.  That was in a one and done game too.   

 

 

Agreed.....bad calls are a part of MLB - which is why they're going to instant replay next year.  Which makes this call even more odd...

I think the big reason that they didn't overturn Joyce's call is because it was a split second decision, even if it was wrong. If you remember, the baserunner was obviously out, but the ball didn't pop out or anything along those lines. Because it didn't, you give the ump the benefit of the doubt. 

 

In this case, it was APPARENT to all the umps around that the ball was never in the glove, and you could even hear the crew chief say that the other 5 umps who saw it were 100% sure that it wasn't caught.

 

If you need examples of overturned calls in the past, you can look on youtube. just a quick search revealed 5 different times where umps overturned different calls

      Pretty sure that a QB contract payday is all the competition any QB in this league needs, I don't think a competent backup is going to make them play any harder when the current situation wouldn't warrant the contract extension yet anyways. Your opening point in this post is also the problem, "Bryce has shown signs of improving", but that's still all he's shown, and he's only showing that because of just how bad he was to start his career. If he played like last season from the beginning and never improved one bit, then I actually think more fans would be ready to move on from him, which is what's weird.  It's like going from one of the biggest draft busts of all time into the 25th best QB in the league over 3 years means he deserves a long term $40+ million a year contract extension. Improvement shouldn't be the goal when the result of said improvement is still bottom of the league levels.

      Yeah, but we've seen him do it. Just not often. I think that's the reason for the taller WRs. Would likely be a problem finding someone like Jimmy Horn in the mess.

      And the Rams, Seattle, Patriots, Green Bay, Jaguars and the Bills who all made the playoffs and in case you forgot, Seattle and the Patriots played in the SB. By any measure, that's pretty brutal.
