I think we do it to keep our gunners from running into the freaking ball.  Having another guy back there to direct traffic can't hurt.  You do see that formation more in college to get a redirection of the first guy to the ball.

I may not have this right, but wasn't Klein on ST before subbing for Blackburn? Or was Dockery on ST before getting hurt? The "man in the middle" I believe leaves just 2 on the outside instead of 3. Maybe they changed the formation to make up for a speedy outside player that is no longer on ST. idk

 

But, hey, if it works then continue to use it! I did notice a couple of times that Lester didn't really get any good hits on anyone before the play went past him.
