Carolina - San Fran Comparisons

There is a lot of talk about how equal these teams are. Lets break it down by units..

QB

Kaepernick is a one read wonder. Cam is a league MVP candidate.

Winner: Carolina

OL

I don't think there is any honest person that would pick Carolina here.

Winner - San Fran

WR

While Smith/Boldin matchup is pretty close, San Fran has much better depth. Who would take Lafell over Crabtree? No one.

Winner - San Fran

TE

Greg Olsen has more receptions than Vernon Davis. Davis had more yards. Olsen, however, is more durable.

Winner - Carolina

RB

Yes, Frank Gore is legit, but I will take the triple threat of Tolbert, Williams, Stewart. All capable of being NFL starters.

Winner - Carolina

DL

Hardy, Star, Dwan, Johnson are the best front four in the league. No comparison.

Winner - Carolina

LB

Patrick WIllis is their best, and Luke bests him. Thomas Davis adds to the dominance.

Winner - Carolina

CB

I'd take Rogers and Brown over our guys. But I do like Melvin White's future.

Winner - San Fran

S

Mitchell and Mikell are a more formidable duo than Reid and Whitner

Winner - Carolina

K

Gano has missed 3. Dawson has missed 4.

Winner - Carolina

Coaching

I am assuming RIverboat Ron will show up on Sunday. If so, I think it is a push. If not, Harbaugh wins.

Winner - Push

I love my Panthers, but this is homer picks all the way.

Cam is better than Kap, I will concede that, but he is not an MVP candidate. That was wrapped up by Manning.

Olsen and Davis are a push, though Davis has certainly more capability to take over a game.

Running game is a push.

Also, the linebackers for San Fran are this: Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Navarro Bowman, and Patrick Willis. That is as stout of a core as you will find. We have Kuechly and Davis (both fantastic players in their own right), but then we have Blackburn (who is nowhere near the level of Brooks or Smith on the outside). By the way, Bowman is their best.

Kicker is not based on who has less misses. Dawson has also kicked significantly more, and is a proven kicker over time. Gano has been great this year, but it is no guarantee that he doesn't miss in a big spot. I'd say push here at best for us.

Again, I love my team. But this 49ers team is darn good, and rightfully deserve to be favored by a couple of points going into this game. It will be a toss up game in my opinion, with the winner being decided by which QB handles the consistent pressure thrown at him.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
