Beach's Music Periodical: New Phantogram & Record Re-Discoveries

On the new artist end:

The new Phantogram is sick people.

"Black Out Days" performance:

You may know them for this:

*in a Patrick Bateman voice

The band has developed and has a great feel, meshing the clear and the fuzz with a well balanced formula.  With influence ranging in areas of jazz to soul to newer styles in electronic, they simplify yet magnify and overall create well thought out lead, bass and percussion layers.

On the vocal end...a lot of female vocalists nowadays have been blowing up in Lorde and in HAIM for instance but this girl has less of a sense of reservation in the way she sings.  Many female singers tend to stress the vulnerable traits of their voice and it at times can shift the energy but Sarah Barthel of Phantogram has a grunge meets soul feel to her voice that syncs incredibly well with the style the band plays.

Great stuff.  Recommend and am excited about their upcoming album this year.

New single "Black Out Days" a 9/10

On the discovered record(s) closing note:

Passed through Five Points in Columbia, SC the other day and found some gems at a local record store buried in the 5$ and under bins:

"Thick as a Brick" by Jethro Tull

"Trilogy" by ELP

"Surfin' Safari" by the Beach Boys

All great albums. Latest fixes on the table: "War Heroes" by Jimi Hendrix and the new Arctic Monkeys.
