2014 CAROLINA PANTHERS MOCK OFF-SEASON

According to "OverTheCap", we should have around $10.2mil in cap space after franchising Greg Hardy and cutting both Dwill and Godfrey. With some players restructuring their contracts, Gettleman should be able to bring in at least two key free agents.

FRANCHISE:
Greg Hardy, DE
GREGHARDY_zps5fe9c3c9.jpg

I can't really see a long term deal being done with Hardy. If we are going to be a contender for next season again, we'll need this man. I think that this situation is going to come down similar to what we did with Julius Peppers. Gettleman will tag the man and let him walk after 2014 season. I was "iffy" about franchising Hardy due to not showing up in his biggest game ever (vs. SF / Playoffs). I needed him to show me one more time, and that time came last weekend in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl. "SOLD!!!".

CUT(S):
DeAngelo Williams, RB
Charles Godfrey, FS

Resign(s):
Jordan Gross, OT
Mike Mitchell, FS
Travelle Wharton, OG
Ted Ginn Jr., WR
Graham Gano, K

Free Agent(s):
Hakeem Nicks, WR

2014 NFL DRAFT

(1.28) MARQISE LEE, WR, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
MARQISELEE11_zps54476cf6.jpg

Another year, another great prospect falls right into Carolina's laps. This time Gettleman will land probably the most complete receiver in the draft in Marqise Lee. Lee falls this far in the draft due to a season battling with injuries and having bad QB play. Cam Newton would be thrilled to see the Panthers select Marqise Lee at pick 28.

Marqise Lee is truly one of the best kids that you’ll ever find, and his story is just amazing.

(2.60) LAMARCUS JOYNER, CB/S, FLORIDA STATE
LAMARCUSJOYNER_zps44a6850d.jpg

The highly talented, but "small" defensive back will fall down the draft due to his size. The kid stands at only 5'8", but plays bigger than his size due to having a tremendous vertical leap. Joyner played both corner and safety at FSU. Gettleman will select him here and plug him at "safety" right away. Smaller safeties are now starting to become the norm in the NFL. Joyner will give the Panthers' secondary the same impact of what Kenny Vaccaro and Tyrann Mathieu did for their teams in 2013.

(3) JAMES HURST, OT, NORTH CAROLINA
JAMESHURST1_zps6f6ecb88.jpg

Hurst suffered a broken leg in the bowl game vs. Cincinnati. Before then, he was looking like a late 1st to early 2nd rounder. James Hurst is an instant upgrade over Byron Bell, and will be groom to replace Jordan Gross as the blind side blocker for Cam once Gross is gone.

(4) JUSTIN ELLIS, DT, LOUISIANA TECH

The Panthers reportedly met with Ellis at the Senior Bowl. Colin Cole was a huge reason why teams were not able to run on the Panthers' defense in 2013. Cole may not be back for next season so the Panthers will have to get another big body, run stuffer in the middle. There's no better way to do so than with the mammoth (6'2" 342lbs) Justin Ellis.

(5) ANDRE HAL, CB, VANDERBILT
ANDREHAL1_zps96d1caa1.jpeg

Andre Hal's stock seems to be taking a hit lately for whatever reason. But, Hal is a solid corner with good size that has shown he can play against the tough SEC receivers. Hal came out and played a great game vs. Donte Moncrief in the 2013 season opener.

(6) KEVIN NORWOOD, WR, ALABAMA
KEVINNORWOOD1_zps7038cfab.jpg

Kevin Norwood helped his stock big time last week in Mobile, Alabama: 4 rec, 53 yards, and 1 td. Standing at 6'2", Norwood will give Newton a bigger target to look at down field.

highly touted USC receivers .....terrify me.

nonetheless good mock and offseason post

Scares me too and more so with Lee due to his history of injuries, but the kid has looked good coming back. Robert Woods succeeded this past season, so I def expect nothing less of that with Marqise Lee.

Love you resigns, FA signs, and your draft. I would love to have a depth chart like that. So you say we would be left with 10M after Hardy, I don't see how your math works. In my post you stated that the following was too low to re-sign the following:

Gross 2M

Mitchell 2M

Gano .8M

Wharton .6M

Ginn 1.5M

= 6.9M

so you are expecting to re-sign those 5 at a rate higher than what I stated, pick up Nicks and Tillman, and pay for all of the draft players with less than 3M? The cap hit for Star and Short were 2.6M alone as rookies in 2013.

Edit: Was the 10M before the restructures or after?

Love you resigns, FA signs, and your draft. I would love to have a depth chart like that. As with my mock I'm afraid about doing all of this with the cap space we have. In my post you stated that the following was to low to re-sign the following:

Gross 2M

Mitchell 2M

Gano .8M

Wharton .6M

I'll let Gettleman figure that one out. lol

But, I think that Gross, Mitchell, Gano, Wharton, and Ginn will make more than what you listed.

I think Nicks will get around (5-6mil) and Im assuming that we sign him to a 1-2 yr deal. Tilllman will probably get a 1yr/4-5 mil; 4.5 could get him here.

I also stated that current players will have to help fix their contracts in order to get this scenario done.
