should goddamn be the next word we ban then

someone get the competition committee on the line

GD is a bad word, I try not to say it. I feel remorseful after I say it. I was changing the oil in my car once and my hand slipped on the filter and some of the oil got on my hand. I said it then. But it also isn't a word founded on a baseless hate of someone's ethnicity. I don't understand how it's any different when a white person says it compared to a black person. It's really a testament to parenting and the type of environment the person grew up in when they throw that word around.

words have context and meaning that shifts between cultures

it's ok that you "don't understand how it's any different when a white person says it compared to a black person." you're free to not understand anything that you choose. but just because you have trouble understanding doesn't mean you're in the right when you judge everyone who uses it. you have a natural aversion to the word and that's great because you're a white guy and why would you ever want to use that word? but you're obviously not a part of the culture that has reappropriated the word

anyway here's a long list of words that have been reappropriated in much the same way that for some reason never get threads dedicated to them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reappropriation#Words_that_could_be_considered_reclaimed

It's a bad word. Period. It's socially unacceptable to say it. If you want to toss it around with your "homeboys" at your house then so be it but saying the word in a civilized, social setting is wrong. I also hope they included the homophobic F word in the penalty.

tbh ppl should say whatever they want to say. it would make it a lot easier to spot the racists. the riley coopers of the world shouldn't fear a 15 yard penalty every time they threaten to fight "every ****** here." then how would we know that they're actual pieces of poo?

A black person who says it has racist tendencies, too.

oh wow acknowledging that other cultures exist and words mean different things in different contexts sure is a culture in and of itself that i'm forcing upon you. wow you really got me there

you said for me to "stop forcing my culture on people" yet you have no problem with YOUR culture using the vulgar, insensitive, inappropriate, hateful word whenever and wherever YOU deem fit.

really that wiki is fascinating and for some reason i feel like you only pitch a fit about the n word

poo i bet you're a tar heel FAN. imo those words have no place in civilized society

there's plenty of words and language I don't use and certainly would never use in public. I stated earlier that I'd like to see the NFL include the homophobic F word in the penalty as well. Doubt they will though.

Also, comparing a prestigious and highly successful college basketball team to a racially charged word linked to slavery really speaks to the profound level of your ignorance. Are you an adult?  #COMEONMAN

do you think that unc invented "tar heel" for its basketball team? and do you really speak in hashtags?

read up, champ http://alumni.unc.edu/article.aspx?sid=3516

tar heel was a derogatory term for years. this is indisputable and unc is proud of it. uncivilized pieces of poo, imo

There's nothing in the word that's insensitive or racially charged. I'm very proud to be called a Tarheel by my brothers and sisters of all colors. Are you proud to be called the N-word when an african-american says it to you?

why is it that you're totally ok with north carolinians reclaiming "tar heel" but you're not ok with black people reclaiming the n word? why is it that "tar heel" is "prestigious" but the n word is "uncivilized"? you're revealing quite a bit about yourself

Your scope on society is extraordinary. You feel that the only hateful, inappropriate, insensitive word in the world is the N word. How many times did you call that 15 year old on XBOX live the homophobic F word yesterday? You probably think it's funny when New Zealanders are called racial epithets. Why? because it doesn't apply to you and the only culture that matters is YOUR OWN.

Well, majority of the users of the word weren't the ones who created it. It was forced onto them. Now the originators of that word is trying to force is outta their mouth. Pretty ironic. Can't be that easy.

The way you get rid of that word is thru education. And of course that would be too expensive thus the NFL is trying to find a shortcut that cost them nothing. Interesting how everything about this word is centered around 'nothing'. A word created on the notion that people would be enslaved to work for 'nothing', now they're trying to eliminate that same word but trying to spend 'nothing'. Life is a revolving door, I guess?

this is a good post.I don't agree with all of but I do agree that people who toss around the N-word (or any other racially/hatefully charged word) are uneducated, immature, and ignorant.

Most Americans don't know our true history.  The origins of the word and slavery and civil rights movement aren't taught in school.

We have hip-hop that's extremely popular with all different groups, teaching kids and everyone else that it's okay to use the word, and it's used so often that it can't be that much worse than other vulgar language.

Then, we have a generation of people whose parents didn't teach them history, and only taught them that it was a racist word, and that white people can't use it.  The kids don't know why, they just take it as is.

People who don't know history, and the "race baiter" crowd rebel at the notion that these "hypocrites" have the audacity to tell them what to do or what they can't because that isn't fair, so they use it at home and then moan and groan that they can't use it either, knowing damn well they use it all the time, and not in the "brotherly" manner.

Now we have come to a point where the uneducated younger generation, which I'm a part of have lost all sense of vocabulary and use the word as if it's the only word they know, and it's becoming more popular by the second when you have ignorant rappers making a mockery of everything that some have fought their entire lives for.

Now, you have people who are educated and know history who are offended, and try to get people to stop using the word, and it's an uphill battle.  The word has become pervasive into everyday life, and in too many different areas of society, high and low.  You have both sides, the "race baiters" and the "hip hop generation" who all feel entitled to use the word, and may never realize how stupid it makes everyone look.  And in order for people to stop using it, things like this have to happen.

solid post. Do the people defending the word actually think that when John Carlos sees Eric Holder walking down the street; John would walk up to Mr. Holder and say "what's up my ------?" lol

    • okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.
    • Jackie, any more reps tomorrow, or is that it for this session?  thanks for the work
    • How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
