Business as usual in the NFL. There's a reason why ERFAs never sign big long-term contracts. It's because there's no pressing need. The team controls their rights for the next two seasons as long as they tender them. Don't commit long-term until you have to. It sucks for the player but it's just rhe business of the NFL. Even if you're totally sold on the player anyone can suffer a career ending or altering injury at any time so until you have to commit long-term you're better off not.

Back to XL, I am not there to know how dense he is when it comes to coaching and the lessons offered and how long it takes for him to absorb that. I suspect he needs more time for that stuff. Than the next guy. And whether it would help or not I think he would have a better chance with more attention than I think he gets. You wanna say he should hire his own coach? It’s not really hardball. Teams do the same with the fifth year. If Coker is invaluable and a solid WR, we’ll give him an extension with a signing bonus (for the immediate money) but the extension usually starts after/includes the RFA year.

There isn’t even negotiating. The tender amounts from ERFA and RFA are present, like the 5th year option or franchise tag. This discussion is kind of pointless right now.

I don’t know. I don’t feel like they should play hardball with him unless they don’t want to pay him later. He could get alienated given what he just did in the playoffs. There is no 3 for 30 this year. Sitting out could ruin his career. If he plays lights out this year, the agent might be able to get 4 for 60 next year.

I again disagree but this literally has nothing to do with XL. He was just as bad in snap one as his last snap of the season. If anything, he kept getting worse. That's not a practice issue. That's an issue with motivation and ability.

He won’t get a new contract this year. It will likely be before his 4th year. Panthers can use the RFA for a cheap year in 2027 and then give him a 3-4 year extension for 2028-2030/2031. All assuming he has a solid year in 2026 and we want to extend him. There’s just 0 reason for Panthers to do anything different as worst case is you get him for 2 more cheap years or for 1 more cheap year and a 1st round pick.

I look at it like a quarter of the season is lower quality football. The veteran teams will likely fare better because they have a lot of experience together to fall back on. A team like us with a bunch of new people, it hurts us.

I definitely hear you there. I think that also had a lot to do with the drop off in QB play across the league. It has gotten worse and worse due to college coaches not really preparing kids to play at the next level anymore. They are just doing what they need to do to get wins. Who would've thought Matt Stafford would have this resurgence? Teams are holding on to old QBs now . They would've been a playoff team in the Cam year if so many players hadn't foregone the season and Cam didn't get covid. Then they made the playoffs in Mackorkle's first year. Then the great fall off began and that was due to his GM resume. Belichick definitely didn't have the greatest track record as a GM.

Yeah, that probably matters for 2-3 games of the season. If that is the difference between anything significant happening in your season or not, perhaps your team just wasn't very good? I don't think we will agree on this subject. I just generally view this as fairly insignificant.

It’s clear. If you sit out and don’t accrue you go into the next season at the same level almost like the sit out year never happened. There’s no loophole to UFA after two accrued seasons.

Yeah a returner with 74 catches, 1207 receiving yards and 7 TD's in his career at the point he was named a Pro Bowler. But since you don't think that matters, he was also a first team All Pro that season, as well. You can dig this hole as deep as you want but I have no idea what the point of this is for you.
