Week 18 Game Thread: Cats vs Birds
Navy_football replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Anyone mention how well the receivers played yesterday? Even got a little YAC. Nothing crazy, but at least they weren't falling down or running out of bounds after the catch. XL, JT Sanders, Coker, and of course AT. Still need a big YAC guy, but if the young guys can continue to develop I'm not sure a high draft pick is needed. -
Agree. The offense wasn't good scheme wise, at least for a rookie. That week 3 game was definitely a benching. Should have kept him on the bench a couple more weeks when it was obvious he wasn't ready. I honestly believe Tepper wouldn't allow it last season. So I give Tepper some credit for stepping back and allowing Canales to run the team.

With a healthy Jaycee Horn covering whoever came to his side of the field. Bad. Just bad.
-
Rivera is not that aggressive. He relies on the front four applying pressure to the QB. That wouldn't work here now. Plus his defense is bend but don't break either. Now if the Panthers could draft a Luke, Thomas Davis, Charles Johnson, Greg Hardy and Josh Norman this year, then it just might work.

up to 84 now. Maybe should lose privileges or something.

Makes perfect sense. I just think that goes without saying. EVERY position needs to have that kind of competition. Every one. Right down to the place kicker. Heck, even the backups at some positions should have strong competition. Definitely don't think they should bring in a low end QB just to save Bryce's feelings or something. That would NOT be productive. But whoever that guy is should not impact their ability to bring in playmakers at the WR, DE, FS, ILB, DT positions. Those are infinitely more important needs.

Hahaha!!! Hallucinations, an increase in body temperature and heart rate, heavy sweating, muscle weakness, nausea and vomiting, and lack of coordination... are in fact not the way. ain't nobody got time for that.
-
Roger that. Maybe I misunderstood the intent of your post. Would just kinda seem unneccessary to mention that they'd have a backup QB next season. They'll have backups on the roster at every single position, except maybe some specialists. I interpreted your original post as bringing in real competition for the starting QB position as motivation for BY to continue to improve. Agree they should bring in a guy that could win a few games in case of injury. But BY has EARNED the starting QB position. It's his to lose at this point. That's what happened after the benching. Starting QBs don't have to Re-earn their position every year. That's not productive for anyone. I think Bill Parcells said, if you have 2 QBs you don't have any. I agree with that.

Not sure if I completely agree. Use FA to focus on a proven WR or Edge. If Bryce sucks like the first 2 games this year, then you let him drive us to the #1 pick and his replacement. But you'll never know what we have in him if this receiving corps isn't improved. We need a guy. At least one.

I love your enthusiasm sir!!! you may need to take a break from the peyote. but I love your spunk!

Which part was a strawman argument - in your opinion? To bring in a backup that would compete with BY would take significant draft capital or salary cap that can be better appropriated to improve positions of weakness. If you're thinking a 5th round draft pick, then I'm all for it. But they wouldn't really be pushing BY for the start.

That's a fair point. But the margin between wins and losses in the NFL is usually very small. Like one or two plays small. They really do have to figure that part out at some point in order to be successful, no matter how much talent they bring in. -
No. That's something you made up in your head. Nobody thinks that's an actual thing but you. This team needs a #1 WR, and an entire defense. Not a backup QB to puch Bryce Young.

That's 100% logical - in a vacuum. But you don't think it's more important for the team to learn how to win, than picking a couple of draft picks earlier? Still top 10. Can get great players and develop the team's culture/mindset. This team, particularly the offense, is very young. -
Agree with OP. Evero is stubborn and refuses to change his way/scheme for the team. In no world should you allow Evans, Cee Dee Lamb, Drake London to dictate the kind of coverage they get. Horn wasn't in this game, but he was against Dallas and early Tampa. If a guy is torching you, you assign your best guy on him. That's like 101 stuff. The OC shouldn't be able to hide him in the slot or the other side of the field.

Right, I agree. But now that we have our franchise QB, what are we losing games for to move up and get now? A WR? A DT? A DE? Not sure Panthers need to be that high to improve any of those positions in this draft. QB is the only position that would garner that kind of a haul. -
Hold up. Let me get this straight, cause maybe I'm trippin. So the Panthers need 2 more WRs (one to start at the X), a backup RB that'll get 10+ touches a game, at least one starting edge rusher, a starting ILB, a starting FS, and a new DC because they were the worst defense in the history of the NFL. But they should use high draft capital or salary cap for a backup QB that hopefully will never see the field. All because Bryce Young needs competition to push him to improve. Boy if you don't stop...

I kinda agree with you on this one. It took the #1 pick in the 2023 draft to find our franchise QB after numerous failed attempts. -
... so hard!
-
This game should show us how bad our receiving group really is. Thielen has been great for us, but he wouldn't be much for either of these teams. 3rd option at best. By far the #1 option in Carolina. We need playmakers.
-
I think Bryce didn't know the offense well enough to start the season. He seems to understand what's being asked of him a lot better now from play to play. He knows his protection, escape routes and checks at the snap. Sometimes it's harder to learn when you're in the fire. Also think he didn't trust the oline or his receivers. Watching Dalton for a month helped him see that things were very different from last season. Finally, he found his swag. Maybe stopped putting so much pressure on himself and started playing to make plays rather than playing to not make mistakes. Canales benching him allowed all of that to happen.

So Ickey is only 24! He's been starting for 4 years at LT in the NFL and he's only 24 years old. And his birthday is October 31st, so he turned 24 halfway through his 4th season. Why didn't I know that? Perspective here. He will get better. He's not even in his physical prime yet! Like 2 or 3 years away! And he's been pretty healthy - knock on wood. Go with the 5th year option and get him locked in long term! He's gonna be an all pro one day. This is crazy.
