  1. Is that just the Panthers or league wide?
  2. Most of you are probably saying ...who is that? Well, as some people put it...before there was Michael Jordan there was Henry Logan. He paved the way. If you are old enough and lived in western NC...you know who he was. He played high school basketball at Stephens-Lee High School in Asheville, North Carolina.[1][2] After high school Logan became the first African-American collegiate basketball player in the history of North Carolina and perhaps at any predominantly white institution in the southeastern United States when he enrolled at and played basketball for Western Carolina University.[3][4] The Western Carolina University Board of Trustees wrote that Logan was “the first African-American basketball player to be recruited by and play for a predominantly white institution in the Southeast".[3] At WCU Logan scored 60 points in a game against Atlantic Christian in 1967, and he holds the record for most points in a season (1,049), a career (3,290) and highest career points average (30.7).[3] Logan led the nation in scoring for the 1967–68 season, when he averaged 36.2 points a game.[4] Logan helped the United States take the gold medal in the 1967 Pan American Games.[3] In 2000, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame inducted Logan as member of its 37th class. Others in his induction class included Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson.[3][4] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Logan_(basketball) Another good read: https://carolinassportshub.com/55-years-ago-this-season-henry-logan-became-a-pioneer-at-western-carolina-in-the-old-carolinas-conference/ Not only was Logan the first African-American to play college basketball in an previously all-white conference in the South, but his playing style foreshadowed some of the greatest players in the history of the sport he played. And Logan’s impact continues to be felt. Not only did every league in the South integrate their athletic teams within 10 years of Logan’s historic freshman year of 1964-65 but longtime basketball observers consider Logan’s high-jumping playing style the direct line to future in-state basketball greats like Boiling Springs’ David Thompson and Wilmington’s Michael Jordan. “He was absolutely stunning as a player,” Dave Odom told The Gaston Gazette in 2004. “You know, people talk about Thompson and Jordan and all these great players. And they were all great players. But none were better than Henry Logan. None.” Before Logan left Western Carolina after four seasons starring for the Catamounts as a four-time all-conference player and one time league player of the year, Logan held records that will almost certainly never be broken. As happened too frequently back in those days...a good athlete could just skip academics. Henry was in college for 4 years...went to the NBA...and he could not read. He also developed addiction problems. He conquered both illiteracy and addiction and became a leader in his community (Asheville) after basketball. He was honored a few months ago: https://www.citizen-times.com/story/sports/2023/03/16/henry-logan-basketball-asheville-north-carolina-black-segregation-wcu-aba-injury-alcoholism/70004553007/ He died today unexpectedly....probably from heart problems. I know this because his sister is a very good friend of mine and she called me a short while. He was a sports legend but I honor him for the man he became.
  3. My take is that the Panthers have a lot of team guys. Burns is 1 example...negotiating a contract but had no thought of not coming to camp. I am sure that is no accident. Reich and company seem to be looking for a certain type....physically talented, smart,...did I mention smart?, and good people. Building he team the right way. The free agent additions are a great fit(t) and seem to like being here. I like the start, like the philosophy, and maybe...we finally are on the road to success. Going to believe. Why the hell not?
  4. @Jackie Lee...greatly appreciate your posts.
  5. National expectations are low of course, but it sounds like a lot of players...vets....are not throwing in the towel. No one making lofty predictions but I love Brown's quote. Sounds like they are ready to get down to work. They have been praising the new staff and everyone seems on board and impressed with Bryce. I like starting the season as underdogs and barring bad luck with injuries, expect this team to surprise some people. https://theathletic.com/4719768/2023/07/25/carolina-panthers-training-camp-bryce-young-2/?source=dailyemail&campaign=601983 Even with the arrival of the draft’s No. 1 pick, head coach Frank Reich with a new coaching staff and some well-thought-of free agents, no one outside of the Carolinas is expecting much from the Panthers. Sports books give the Panthers the third-lowest odds to win the division, behind New Orleans and Atlanta and ahead of only the Tom Brady-less Buccaneers. “I don’t think very many people give us a chance at the beginning of the year to do much of anything,” fourth-year defensive tackle Derrick Brown said. “Going out here and proving folks wrong, I think that’s the only message that the team’s got right now.” But Brown added a more colorful message about the Panthers lying in wait in the NFC South: “Like they say about a snake, man, it won’t bite you ’til you see it.” The Panthers’ recent track record provides little reason for optimism. It’s been six years since their last winning season (ouch)and playoff berth — a wild-card appearance in 2017. Julius Peppers had 11 sacks that year at 37 in his return to Carolina, Cam Newton started 16 games. Eight quarterbacks have started at least one game in the five years since, only two of whom (Newton and Will Grier) were Panthers’ draft picks. The Panthers are one of only seven teams that still hold training camp away from home, and Hurst was planning a Target run to pick up a box fan for the dorm. Young referenced Spartanburg’s humidity and said the Panthers would need to push through the tough days and practices ahead. Brown looked forward to getting away from his devices and focusing solely on football. “We get nice compensation for what we do. We all live different lives and have all these different things going on 24/7. When you come here, it’s a chance to truly shut down everything else and just worry about ball,” he said. “Because no matter where you turn there’s either a coach or another guy who plays right beside you. … It’s football 24/7 down here.” It’s a huge opportunity for us to win a division and make some noise but these are days that matter,” said Horn, who’s been cleared to practice after being sidelined for part of OTAs and minicamp with a foot injury. “No matter what we’ve got on paper — the No. 1 pick, all these defensive acquisitions — it don’t matter if you don’t put in the work,” Young impressed teammates and coaches during the spring by quickly processing an offense that has merged Reich’s scheme with some elements from Sean McVay’s system that offensive coordinator Thomas Brown brought from L.A. Young also demonstrated a knack for knowing when and where to slide in the pocket to find passing lanes and make off-platform throws. But what stood out most to many of the veteran players was how Young announced his arrival to the NFL — in silent mode. He’s going to go about his business a certain way, kind of like last year when I was with Joe,” Hurst said. “He’s not in your face. He’s not screaming. He’s in there watching film every day. It makes you want to be on top of your game, because you don’t want to let guys like that down. “Because you know they’re gonna come to practice every single day — Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, day six of camp — it doesn’t matter. They’re gonna be on top of their stuff, so you better be on top of yours as well.”
  6. Just listened to Fitt's presser. He thinks Sanders will be catching passes...said it several times. Sounds like one of the reasons they wanted him. We'll just have to see how it plays out.
  7. But, but....how will they know what to do????
  8. Hopefully he is just trying to take a little pressure off Bryce.
  9. Saints going "all in" to win the South. lol
  10. Sanders is now the exception here. Hurst and Thielen may not light up the game but they can be reliable pass catchers. I am sure they expect teams to come after the rookie QB and will be ready for that.
  11. Bryce has the advantage of having very good coaches and good support (Dalton). I am sure the coaches are going to be smart and will not game plan for him to throw 400 yds a game to get a win. The offense was designed to take a lot of pressure off of him. There is a running game and some vet receivers. There is not a diva demanding the ball. That's one reason this team is different from most of the teams that a #1 draft pick QB lands on. Young does not have the pressure of putting the team on his back. He can play the game that he is ready for and each week that will get a little more complex. He will make mistakes but he is not likely to repeat the same mistakes. I am also expecting that we have a coaching staff that is capable of making adjustments. So no, I do not think we are putting too much on him. This team was designed so that he does not have to be a hero. We can start with a goal of decent, smart play from our rookie QB and then go from there.
  12. Looks like best rank was last year at #10. Worst was 2021 at #43 2022 2021 2020 2019 https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/advanced-stats-rb.php?year=2019
  13. Yep. 2022 rushing attempt leaders Sanders career NFL carries:
  14. I was thinking that is ws not too bad for Spartanburg.....lol
  15. https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/quarterback-season-two-ordered-by-netflix-according-to-peyton-manning/ “Season two has been greenlit by Netflix.
  16. If that happens, every Panther fan and every coach will hold their breath while screaming GET OUT OF BOUNDS!! That would be much too stressful on us...lol. But..for certain he will not be taking carries/yards away from Sanders like Hurts did.
  17. You need to remember Philly also has a QB that contributes quite a bit to the run game. Bryce is not going to ba a runner. Also, for some reason, whatever reason, when Jalen Hurts became the starter in Philly in 2020, they stopped throwing the ball to their backs. Having a reliable pass catcher out of the backfield is going to be crucial for BY. If teams sell out on the pass rush a dump off to Sanders will make them pay. With the contracts that Hurney gave to running backs over the years, it seems a bit odd to complain about this one. We have a proven multifaceted vet for our rookie QB at a price that does not hurt the team.
