It all depends on the contract he wants or may ask for. The team can't afford to sink top tier LT money into Icky because he's not that guy. After signing 2 guards to big contracts, Moton's contract, a possible BC contract this off season, there's only so much left to pay him. If was all pro caliber like a Sewell or Slater, you don't hesitate. But he's not and it becomes a valid question. If the Jets or Jags came calling offering a 2nd rounder for Icky, do you take it? I'd say he's more suited to slide inside where his power would be better suited to hide his lateral mobility, but again, we already spent on 2 guards and you can't pay him tackle money to play inside. Ultimately, I think it comes down to how we can best allocate $$$ and put players in the best position to be successful.

I'm not giving him a pass per se, but it's hard to run an effective 3-4 without a legit NT. We've never had the personnel to run that scheme effectively, but it is his defense and he's responsible partly for how they have played and his schemes. Can't blame him for injuries or lack of the right players to fit the 3-4, but that soft, prevent D is all his to own.

It's not a knock on Icky. It's just recognizing what he does and doesn't do well vs potential costs to keep him. Icky is best driving forward pushing guys. He has a strong anchor and the power to shove guys out of the way. His lateral movement and quickness aren't nearly as strong. To pass block, you have to have quick feet and balance and that isn't Icky, at least right now.

Prime Cam Newton vs Current Josh Allen
SmokinwithWilly replied to Panther8989's topic in Carolina Panthers
Dave was determined to get him receivers with long arms because Cam tended to throw high. Disregard the fact his line couldn't block the hallway at a nursing home and give him time to pass without having to jail break out of the pocket. Such a sad waste of talent. -
We've never had the personnel to run a 3-4. That was Tepper's brain child when he bought the team. Ron had run 4-3 his entire tenure and all of a sudden on the coaching hot seat he completely switches defensive schemes and we stick with it once he's gone? That call came from up above.

At least it's something to discuss other than another embarrassing season. -

It's true but Cam had a much bigger and likeable persona. -
But we didn't trade 2 1sts, 2 2nds and DJ Moore for anyone else on the rest of the team.

Icky was a typical Panthers draft pick. We passed on the guy who was already ahead of the game in pass pro but needed to develop run blocking instead of the other eay around. Pass blocking is a lot harder than run blocking. Icky will at best be a solid LT that excels at run blocking but he's never going to be a pro bowl pass blocking LT. We can't afford to pay him like one. It's kind of like the Burns situation again. If he wants top 5 money, you gotta let him walk.

Has this game changed feelings about Young?
SmokinwithWilly replied to Jmac's topic in Carolina Panthers
Nope. I've been saying he's making progress but I wasn't crowning him the franchise. QB is still an issue as it has been. We need consistency. -
Most of the "haters" have been saying calm down, let's see if he can sustain his level of play. This game has been ugly to this point. The fumbles are killers.

Playing against Lamb this week in 2 leagues PPR. I'm going to get killed if this poo keeps up.

For a 2-15 team, the first 3 picks should be day 1 starters or at least the 1st 2 with rotational 3rd. Certain positions are routinely found in particular rounds more frequently. It's like we draft without this in mind and gamble on raw prospects instead of filling positions of need with likely starters. I just don't get it.

Frazier made more sense than Brooks. We were going to have a starting C that was switching from guard on the last year of his contract. Taking a RB with a busted wheel for a 2-15 team isn't really a luxury you can afford.

Not necessarily a max contract stipulation, but rather a realization that devoting so much to a single, albeit extremely important, position can seriously hinder the teams ability to compete. I would lean more towards and offense and defensive cap, say a 40-60% dedication of resources one way or the other.
