What I find funny is that Marty and the Polians are at very opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. Marty is generally considered to be a nice guy (some might say "pushover") who tends to remain cool and doesn't make enemies. On the flipside, once during a particularly contentious negotiation, Bill Polian picked up a chair and threw it at an agent. Pretty sure there was also a story that Chris threw a punch at someone in the Colts stadium, a reporter if memory serves. That might also have been Bill but I think it was Chris or at the very least Chris was involved. Jerry Richardson reportedly used to write the word "CALM" in big letters on a piece of paper and flash it at Polian during meetings and negotiations at times when it looked like he was starting to lose it. The contrast in styles between Richardson's southern cool and Polian's Northeast attitude was said to be one of the reasons why they parted ways. Then Richardson hired Dave Gettleman (and ultimately parted ways with him too).

Not Bill, his son. Interesting in that Washington now not only has the Panthers former GM but also the son of their original GM. Heck, they even got a guy who was a candidate to replace Hurney at one point. All they're missing is Jerry Richardson having an ownership stake. Also this note from JP Finlay on Mayhew... If everything you know about Chris Polian is that he's Bill's son, you're on par with most people. Chris took over for his dad as Colts GM in 2009. Didn't go so well. He was fired two years later and there were several reports that he created a toxic culture.

First up, Eagles writer Jeff McLane explains where the holdup on the trade appears to be. Makes sense. Like the Lions with Stafford, they're trying to accommodate him, but they don't have to. Thus, unless the Colts up their offer, he remains in limbo, and likely a Bear. One fan asked if there was any chance of him not being traded. McLane answered he thinks "that ship has sailed". Then another asked whether the Panthers might be a potential destination. Back in, apparently indicating there was a time when we were in, but now we're out. I'm guessing we weren't offering much if anything, but it's interesting nonetheless to think that we inquired.

Exchanging medical information is like one step away from completion, so yeah it was that close. The Panthers weren't Stafford's first choice, and that's all we really know. But even if they were one of the teams he didn't want, he didn't have any leverage to stop a trade. And the Lions only agreed they would try to send him to a place he wanted to go, but only if it was also advantageous to them. Los Angeles upping their final offer made it work out. If not for that, he'd likely be on his way here now.

I don't think his contract is bad for a backup in general. It being too much for Heinicke himself is possible though, but I guess we'll see.

Heinicke? Probably not. I'd say this though: In a given offseason, I might hear myself saying "wow, they got him for cheap"...or I might not. On the flipside, the exclamation "holy sh-t, they paid that for him?'" probably gets used up to a half dozen times on an annual basis. (pretty frequently on the first day of free agency)

I'm not convinced every team in the league sees Trubisky the same way we do. Heck, even the Panthers might have a higher opinion. Hard to say. There have been rumors. Bottom Line: There's 32 teams out there and it only takes one.

Don't think his agent would accept that line of reasoning. Again though, it won't exactly hurt my feelings if that offer comes from somebody else.

For whatever you think of him (and I'm not a big Trubisky fan, for sure) it'd probably still be kinda hard to justify giving Trubisky less of a contract than Taylor Heinecke got.

You see a Patrick Mahomes in this draft class? I don't. Skill wise, maybe Wilson but his physical profile reminds me an awful lot of Teddy Bridgewater. I'm not sure he can take the pounding a pro quarterback takes.

I get that. And I can see it to a point. I'd just have to know they can develop into something more than a guy who runs around a lot and throws the ball really far. There's way more to being a successful quarterback than that.

Either, honestly. it's okay to have a guy that needs more development as your backup, but he still needs the right characteristics.

See what happens at 8 or trade down. And yes, I am willing to wait until next year to get our franchise guy if that's what it takes.

Athleticism is way down my list of priorities. Accuracy, intelligence and the ability to make quick reads are prime factors. Anything beyond that is gravy. Quarterbacks whose prime characteristic is their athleticism don't last anywhere near as long in the NFL as great passers.

That's pretty much me, and I'm not even as big a fan of Lawrence as most are. All three of the "runner up," quarterbacks have too many questions for me to be comfortable with a deal like this.

Excluding developmental guys that teams are trying to train for the future, most organizations look at the backup quarterback one of two ways: A) We want him to be as good as possible just in case our starter suffers a big injury and he needs to play several games B) If our starter gets hurt, we're screwed anyway so let's just get somebody cheap Which of these options do you prefer?

That game showed both sides of the coin. He played very well but got hurt and they thought he was gonna have to leave the game.

I've got a feeling that story's bullsh-t but I suppose it's possible. Pretty sure Easterby and Caserio share an agent, i.e. the guy who convinced McNair that we were ready to throw crazy money at Caserio if he didn't hire him immediately. That story was absolute bullsh-t.

I actually think it's possible we'll be worse this year than last year. I'm okay with that as long as we see progress in year three.

One of my uncles served under Patton. I didn't know about it until I was in college. Hated him. Said he was a glory hound. Same uncle loved Omar Bradley though. Said Bradley used to smear mud over his stars so he wouldn't be distinguishable from the enlisted men.

If Reich weren't their coach, I'm not sure the Colts would be offering anything at all.

Back with Frank Reich is probably the best place for him.

"In the hunt" isn't enough anymore. The few good seasons we've had have been "in the hunt" or at best "almost". If we're still willing to settle for that, why bother getting rid of Rivera and Hurney?

I hope we're not. The Colts are offering more than I would.
