Simms is right on the money re the competition

Wasn't it Al Wallace? -
The majority of people on here last preseason thought Grier outperformed Walker, even among Grier critics. We all pretty much also knew who Rhule was keeping no matter how they performed.

ESPN 8 The Ocho had Panthers coverage last weekend

Old enough to remember when the majority of ESPN was stuff like this... -
Didn't say anything about Darnold. I actually think he could find a home as a backup somewhere if someone we're paying a lot less for him than we are.
-
Wouldn't call you dumb, but I would tell you I think you're wrong. Mayfield has actually been nothing but a model citizen so far. And while it's true nobody wanted him at his prior cap figure (including us) you'd likely have seen several teams make an offer had he been outright released. (and keep in mind, I say all this as someone who was not a fan of trading for him)

Likewise, not on board with the idea that making Mayfield think he has to earn it will somehow cause him to work harder. I'm never a fan of using psycho-manipulative bullsh-t in coaching. You can't trick somebody into being good. You can lead them, you can teach them, you can coach them, but you can't trick them. Hell, if I thought somebody needed to be tricked into doing their best, I probably wouldn't want em on my team. -

Yeah...that's nothing special. Darnold could have had the playbook for a whole year before Mayfield did and still wouldn't have gained any advantage. It's the on-field reps that count. And I haven't seen anyone at any point say that Darnold looked more in command of the offense then Mayfield. But let's suppose for a moment that it did matter. Wouldn't it then make sense to give more reps to the guy who had less time to study the playbook? -
Also, guess who's still in the NFL?

Apparently Odell Beckham wants to join Von Miller in Buffalo...

He doesn't have to be. All he has to be is significantly better than Darnold. I seriously doubt anybody would argue that's not true. -

Except he's wrong on facts... Simms cites Darnold as knowing the offense better, when in truth the only advantage Darnold has is the two weeks from OTAs. That's not enough to gain any serious leverage. And while Simms may indeed be a "professional quarterback", there are plenty of other professional football people who disagree. -
No he wasn't. As for Walker, he could be on our practice squad for five years and nobody would give him a look. The only coach who thinks he's an NFL player is Matt Rhule. (who coincidentally isn't an NFL coach)
-
It's not that. It's this... Perhaps that plays well in the locker room. Assuming Mayfield eventually is named the starter, giving Darnold a fair shot should help keep his spirits high in case Mayfield is ever injured or unavailable. From a time, rhythm and offensive consistency perspective, however, it’s difficult to justify allocating half of all practice reps to an eventual backup.

Rhule has stated that the competition will continue through the second preseason game. Yeah, it's dumb, but hey...

And that was the problem...
