Panthers playbook Cox and Rhea review of the game
CRA replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
No one calling the go route efficient or something BY should be doing all game. We are a low ceiling offense for a variety of reasons. Not being able to back teams up and make them pay for cheating coverage is one of them. it’s not about TMac. This inability of our offense has been steadily discussed. It’s a convo about trying to get better where you need to improve….specifically when given the opportunity in ideal spots to work. Even the broadcast crew called the opportunity in real time. We just didn’t take it. We did what we always do -

Not conflating. You literally just stated my point. opportunity existed to work on a weak aspect of ours. In an ideal scenario. Browns backups gave us the look and chance to work on it. We didn’t take that. defenses have cheated coverage for 2 seasons against us with Bryce. Because when a D presents a vulnerable coverage they still don’t worry about. Carolina under BY either can’t or doesn’t take the throw consistently. I want them to work on weakness. You want Bryce throwing underneath and to the sidelines and fixated on what he does well. All this is, is a disagreement on what this team should be working on -
LG Carter didn’t even grade out as the worst starter on the OL and was right there with Moton. For whatever that is worth. Some where acting like he was me out there playing after the game

If your starting QB can’t even throw a one on one vertical route with no S help…..you are going to need to find a new QB. It doesn’t have to be your O. But if you can’t do that, life will always be harder than it needs to be for your offense. That’s a basic throw at this level of play that basically all 32 starters should be able to pull out on occasion. One that doesn’t require Brett Favre arms and paired with Tyreek Hill WRs. It’s forever shrinking a field and allowing a D to cheat coverage with no worries. -

True elite slot WRs. I have always said since the day we drafted BY the best thing you can do for Bryce is give him a great slot WR and a rec RB. if we aren’t moving on from BY which I thought was a near certainty…..I would have advocated for Ladd over XL. -

Preseason is practice vs players that don’t know you. If you are just supposed to be working on your strengths we should have been running Hubbard at fools all night. I’m just talking about a basic one on one vertical route. You don’t need Brett Favre and Tyreek Hill. Jake Delhomme could pull it off to Moose. That opportunity last night was a single high S centerfield. He wasn’t sitting over the top of that route. I’m not talking about tossing up contested jump balls for a jump ball catcher to win. Im talking my about stressing a D vertically and having teams respect it could be thrown -
Let’s bring back Joey Slye week 1 and get in a deep kickoff!! didn’t Slye attempt one like that? I think it went horrible but the belief was there

The type that should in theory should be an XL route over TMac route IS the go route. Sorry if that wasn’t expressed clear enough. Thought that last paragraph was pretty clear on that I don’t know if TMac is a go route guy in the NFL. Not sure he can separate vertically. Which is also a question we have. And then on top of that, can BY make the throws But we don’t know who should be that guy beyond in theory. Bryce has never been great at that aspect. it doesn’t really exist in our O. Which limits us. Allows for more aggressive D play against us IMO You want strengths focused on, I want weakness focused on. O needs expanding. You don’t need a cannon arm to throw a good deep vertical. It’s more ball placement and willingness. Especially when there is no one over the top -
3-1 in our warm up games in 2015 by the way. But it’s all “recency bias”. Dating back to 2003 (which is as far back as ESPN goes)…..Panthers have never had a winning season paired with a bad preseason (losing preseason) Every winning season paired with a .500 or better preseason since 03 and I think the only winning preseason paired with losing season was 04 when 89 broke his leg week 1. maybe there is a game I missed somewhere. But that’s not recency bias. It’s just the way it has been in Carolina since 2003. Could it just be a coincidence? Sure. As I don’t really care about wins in a preseason. But it is a consistent trend in Carolina that results in a random fact

That’s not really something Bryce Young does well. Why not use preseason to improve what you don’t do well. We didn’t have that in the arsenal last year. So yeah, Panthers need to find that vertical play and it’s got to be developed IMO. Not sure our bad D is the only place things should be worked on against. Heck maybe even hitting it in a pointless game could make teams respect it more back off because they clearly don’t worry about it all IMO. we know BY can throw fades to the sideline. We and he play too much to the sideline IMO and that probably should be XL on this O in theory. Not sure TMac is that type WR but it would have been nice to see what TMac actually has in the tank for that type ball. -

lol. I mean it’s the same stuff every year boss. All the way down to what folks say when folks ain’t drinking the ole kool-aid. I still think worst org in ALL of pro sports still has a weak overall team. I don’t need the Panthers to be good. I have been around for all the seasons too. Probably only a super fan since 03 though. Sports fandom is a nice fun healthy hobby in a world full of bad ones. The Carolina Panthers haven’t put me in a bad mood since I had kids and now I got them in high school. Only bad play that really bothers me is my kids lol If you want a list of what I am excited about in Carolina this year? Hunter Renfrow’s comeback (fingers crossed). Coker. Hubbard. Derrick Brown. Hoping for a rookie to surprise. Don’t really care who. I like Canales. Hope he can survive long enough to actually see something get built the way he wants to play (not sure about that given Tepper). Hopefully the weak division and schedule lets us flirt with .500. And I’m still a believer in XL. Didn’t like that nonsense last night at all. -
Browns were the 19th ranked D. 27th in points allowed 30th in takeaways only thing made up, is you pretending the Browns D didn’t stink last year and that we didn’t play the backups of a bad team
-
The 3 win Browns had the #19 ranked D last year boss (27th in points) . I mean they weren’t the Panthers but our starters facing their 2nd and 3rd stringers isn’t a test of anything. I just don’t do this thing some do every single year without fail trying to manifest us into something we haven’t shown to be. I’ve called the last couple years pretty dang well going into each and every one dating all the way back to year 2 of Rhule
-
The entire Browns D was scrubs and it’s a weak to to begin with. Saying we had a backup in at one spot doesn’t make it all a wash and mean much. And the sack to me wasn’t the G being a flood gate. Browns played it well. So that’s a big fat F on series 1. second series gets a ding for XL. They get a ding in the redzone too. TMac drop and then the backups shutdown the 3rds and goal. Which means we got lucky when it broke down part to a degree. So that TD has both good and bad to it. One really bad drive and one okay one if looking at the little things and not just the TD occurring.
-
Starters got smashed their first series by backups they only had one drive after that. XL was an idiot. We got to 3rd and goal and it took a play falling apart and scrabble drill to get in after dropping at wide open TD. that doesn’t seem like an A. You can find some good in it. But overall?

It’s not the only thing that matters. YAC isn’t all that matters. Being able to get vertical annd bust an D open isn’t all that matters. But when you start adding up all the things you can’t do…..you end up with a weak pass O that doesn’t scare anyone (and that becomes your good). We couldn’t do either last year and thus far haven’t shown we can now and there is nothing elite about a driving the field once against backups and their backups on a team that won 3 games last year after getting embarrassed the drive prior….and it taking a 3rd down play breaking down to finally get it in. Carolina good, elite and electric are unique definitions to Carolina (the worst pro team in all of sports under Tepper). -

I’ve seen that throw before. BY does it all the time. He fades everything into the sideline. It’s part of why we have one of the lowest threatening Os in the league. It makes for tough catches. Almost every QB in the league can make those two redzone throws. Now they can’t all get to the ad lib scramble drill part. Lot of that is just luck because the play has gone out the window. the only really nice aspect of Bryce’s game is he does have some nice wiggle and ad lib ability. And I always say that. But he is tiny so that is sort of cursed blessing. you can lecture me for not knowing football. People do it pretty consistent this part of the year for the last several years. but yeah it was a great catch by TMac. TMac was one on one vs a backup with NO ONE over the top….it was also an opportunity to see if TMac can really get vertical in this league which is a question mark. Either the throw or playcall took that away. Maybe it was never a real go ball call. His highlights to date largely have been with dudes (backup types) all over him making really tough grabs when he gets vertical opportunity -

I’m Bill Murray and this is Groundhog’s Day at this point….. the bar in Carolina is weirdly low at this point. And Carolina good and actual good IMO are too different statements at this point. it’s like calling BY electric. Only Panther fans would call that electric IMO -
Yeah, Canales is our playcaller. He is just as green behind the ears as some of our other youngster. I didn’t like that either. And then it just ends up being an excuse of why it was a botched warmup opportunity in so many ways.
-
I think that’s just apologist gymnastics in all honesty. The helmet is smooth? Ok. when people show you they are really dumb….i just tend believe them. No matter the uniform. It being a backup scrub defender 5 plays into this season given where he is on this roster…..says a lot more about his head space and composure at this point in time than his “fire” for me. nothing is the end of the world. But anyone watching the Panthers working on things thus far off that game shouldn’t be overly impressed about what Tepper is about to give the world…..again.

That’s the new present day Panthers though. And Bryce Young. It’s not that we don’t get YAC. Even Bryce’s bigger throws are conservative. Which is why that TMac throw annoys me so much. Sitting here watching the Bills uncork one deep for a TD going into half….Bryce throwing everything to a sideline fade and always lowering the ceiling of things. Bryce isn’t making that throw. He is going to steer the WR out of bounds -
You can largely track the meaningless preseason warmups…..and our good seasons we largely had respectable warmups which lead to us winning at least half of them.
-
Not sure how one drive by our starters playing the 2nd and 3rd stringers of a team that won 3 games last year….indicates our starters are on track. And their backups 3 and outed us on 50% of our drives. fans are doing the same thing we do every year of the Tepper era. Manifesting a good team when there is no evidence yet of such IMO
-
The logic of Bryce looked terrific and then say BUT keep in mind Sanders did what he did vs backups…..is some type of logic

They shouldn’t be capped like that. 3 series could be just 1 quarter. that’s still too light for me given why we are in Carolina. That’s still Dave being too light in the preseason heading in IMO. Much better teams than us work there guys more and I think if you look at our starters last night…..you would have to like overall what the Browns 2s and 3d did slightly more against our starters than what our starters did to them
