How Carolina can / has already Improved the Passing Game
ForJimmy replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
If nothing else he will already have a solid OL, good RB with hands, reliable TE who can catch, and a HC/OC that knows what they are doing. That's already far more than Cam even had. We have brought in several WRs already so it's clear our staff knows it's an issue and plans on addressing it. -
Anderson is too close to Burns. We did that with Reddick and Burns. It’s great against the pass but not against the run. We won 5 games that year…

The problem is I think Houston is ok with Young or Stroud. Hopefully they fall in love with one of them at the Pro Days.

Good point.

Where were you on that one Fitt?

I guess to me the data doesn’t justify pushing the limits even further to what I would consider an outlier. This is simply a healthy debate that I’m sure people inside the Panthers organization are having (probably a lot more civilized and a lot more football IQ and analytics than I could ever have). You should keep posting though. The more opinions the better. Also don’t get me wrong, I will be happy if we take Young. I just prefer Stroud out of the two. Both are solid prospects.

I get where it’s coming from. Plus big QBs like Cam/Allen are more prone to attempt to run through tackles while Brees and smaller ones will simply give themselves up. That definitely goes into the equation and can lead to injuries. However when the QB in question is smaller than the “exceptions” to the standard and our HC has stated “of course” his frame is a concern then I’m going to boldly assume it’s a concern. The truth is if Young had a larger frame he would be in the Luck/Lawrence/Burrow category of QB and everyone would know he will be the top pick.

Why can’t he play RB? Too small? According to your “data” he would be the healthiest RB yet. I saw Stroud struggle under pressure and I saw him handle it well also. Most QBs do play worse when there is pressure. That’s how NYG beat Brady twice (pressure up the middle). I will say it typically made him miss his marks or throw the ball away. He wasn’t turning it over or losing the game due to it. Young is much better under pressure. To me that’s a legit reason to draft Young over Stroud. If our staff thinks Young is the next Mahomes under pressure and it’s worth the frame concerns then I get it. I just think it’s two great prospects and both have weaknesses in which one (Young’s frame) can’t be corrected by our staff, so I lean Stroud. I just think it’s irresponsible to say Young’s size isn’t a concern and actually try to say it makes him LESS prone to injury. Reich has literally said it’s a concern. He named two exceptions (who are both bigger than Young), but said “of course” it’s a concern.

It’s not very good data because it needs to be by position AND Young would be an outlier because 5’10 180 hasn’t happened long term before. If you use it like the poster is trying to then if we play a 5’2” 130 pound QB he would never get hurt and we know that’s not the case. There are limits to most data.

QBs land on their shoulders frequently. Having bigger shoulders with more muscle helps. It’s why RBs aren’t built like kickers. They are built to also absorb impact. You also bring up a good point. Running around extending plays is great, but it also leads to extra hits/wear and tear on that 180 pound frame. It’s just unchartered water when we are dealing with his height/weight. To me it’s an unnecessary risk at 1 when there is another great prospect sitting there in Stroud. If there was no Stroud in this draft then yeah I’d probably take that risk as AR and Levis have even more risks.

I get that, but you also don’t want your top pick to have the same build as Stuart from accounting (I’m an accountant so I can pick on that profession). These are the top athletes in the world, bigger and faster than ever. 5’10” 180ish has never happened long term as a NFL QB. Brees was an exception and he had 2 inches and 20 pounds on Young. Measurements exist for a reason and are reviewed by scouts and coaches. They were concerned about Pickett’s hand size last year. It’s such an issue that it’s a legit reason why Young isn’t considered as high of a producer as Luck, Lawrence, or even Burrow.
-
Yeah it’s a durability thing. People keep referencing Brees. Young is even a good bit smaller than him. The difference between Rodgers and Brees is the same as Brees and Young (about 2 inches and 15-20 pounds). Brees also got the ball out quick (played more like Stroud honestly) and took very little hits. It’s enough of a concern for me to rate Stroud about Young comfortably. Young is still a great prospect, but so is Stroud with less of a risk.

I think if Young was even 6’ 200 (playing weight) I’d lean towards him and that’s still a smaller QB. Young thrives under pressure, but I think Stroud is better in the pocket. Stroud thrives in rhythm and timing. He gets the ball out quickly which I think might translate better in the NFL. I’m just concerned that Young’s style of play leads to more hits which paired with his shall frame makes him slightly more of a risk IMO.

I have nothing against Young. Just poking fun and showing the flaw in putting intelligence over everything else. A QB has to be smart and read a defense but I think both of the top 2 have shown they can do that. I’m also not 100% all in on one player like you are. Sounds like you are a Young fan more than a Panthers fan….

You mean our GM isn’t disclosing his exact draft plan in mid March? That seems odd….

CJ seems like the best fit for Reich’s offense.
