How dangerous is Willis as a runner? What makes him special?
ForJimmy replied to micnificent28's topic in Carolina Panthers
10-6 and got them in the playoffs in his first full season. Keep in mind he was out of the league from his dog fighting crimes for a couple years. Imagine Vick with Reid throughout his career. Now you are switching it up though. You said he couldn't pass so I showed you how he could with the right coach, then you bring it to winning (10-6 isn't terrible), but I assume you mean playoffs wins? So no he didn't get a playoff win immediately with Reid after being out of the league for several years. I'm not sure how that proves he couldn't pass the ball? -

What if we draft a defensive player? -

Take a look at what happened when Vick went to Andy Reid's Eagles. That's when he starts breaking 3000 passing yards (not great but still solid) and broke 60% completion percentage with 21 TDs and 6 INTs in 2010 (his first full season in that offense). Again these aren't crazy numbers but a huge jump from what he was doing at ATL. He had a strong arm and was a capable thrower, just needed the right coach to develop him. Had Reid drafted him we probably would be talking differently about him right now. -

This just shows you its the coaches/OC that have them running so much. Can Cam, Lamar, Vick etc throw well? Of course they they can, they were successful NFL QBs, but their teams designed offenses around them running which you could argue hurt their development. So the whole "running QBs can't win" is pointless. It should be coaches need to expand their playbook/offense if they expect to win a championship in the NFL. -

The general consensus was Lance was going to sit a year. He did and all the sudden everyone is skeptical. Let's see what happens this year before we pass any judgement on him (I know their will be "leaks" for inside the organization). "Ifs" are always going to be around for the draft because there are so many unknowns. Players get drafted based on upside and potential all the time. -
Is There Anyone Other Than a T or QB for the Panthers at #6
ForJimmy replied to Michael G's topic in Carolina Panthers
If we draft Sauce after Horn, paying Jackson, and trading for Henderson I will be frustrated. Sauce is a cool nickname though... QB/LT are the biggest needs, Edge Rushers are always valuable also. I rank the needs 1. QB, 2. LT (because BC showed some potential), 3. Edge Rusher. -

Yep. Burrow elevated the Bengals with their terrible coach/franchise. -

Willis is like Lance was. Raw as a passer but still got by on physical talent in a weaker conference. The goal will be for a team to develop him into a solid passer who can also run when needed. No team is going to want to use him to mainly run the ball and heave a few passes down the field. Teams are in love with his arm talent. He was round 63% completion in college and has the strongest arm in this class. He is a QB who can throw the ball, he just needs further developing/refining. I believe it was McShay that said he will instantly have one of the top 5 arms in the league and if they can develop his footwork in the pocket and teach him to go through progressions you could have a top 10 QB in the NFL. With that said we are not the team to do this. If he goes somewhere like the Steelers or Saints he could turn out pretty good. Cam was never given a proper OL and the refs let teams rough the passer all day against him because of his size. This is why his career ended early. Just think his rookie year he put up 4000 passing yards with a decent OL and Steve Smith. Had we continued to build a team around him he could have been basically what Josh Allen has become in Buffalo. Rivera got too caught up in our defense to realize how good our team could have been if we properly developed Cam. -

Who was Cam’s OC? Shula? -

Lol only that’s not how it works. Cam went number 1 to what was the worst team in the league and won OROTY. Lawrence went number one to the worst team and struggled. -

Cam was top tier for game winning drives during his prime. When he had talent (Smith) at WR he broke 4000 passing yards as a rookie. We also never provided him a LT. https://www.espn.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/31017/overlooked-cam-newton-as-clutch-as-brady-rodgers-and-brees?platform=amp Give Cam Hill, Kelce, and an elite line and imagine what he could have done. How did Mahomes look in his last Super Bowl with his OL was banged up giving him a below average OL? I swear people see a QB running and can’t handle it. Cam could throw it at a high level before TJ Watt destroyed his throwing shoulder. -

OROTY, League MVP is your floor? Then you are never going to draft a QB in the top 10. Guys like Lawrence and Stroud still have risks… Lawrence didn’t win OROTY and he was suppose to be a “sure thing.” -
I don’t think he makes it past the Steelers. They could be rolling out two UNC QBs next year.

A trade down and walking away with Penning and Howell/Corral would be a success to me.

I know right? We have these absolute terrible comments on here from terrible posters like this.

The OG they signed Corbett (I believe) has sustained success at OG for several years and it young so he got a multiple year deal. Bozeman was a OG who slid over to C last year with the Ravens and found success. That’s a short resume so he got a cheap one year deal. If he plays great he can get extended, if not we can move on. Woods has been a good safety for several years and got a 3 year deal. Foreman looked good filling in for Henry but was a free agent before they picked him up. One year deal makes sense. Hekker is a 3 time Pro Bowl punter so he got a multi year deal. Jackson is proven, multiple year deal. These are logical moves. Paying money for Erving because we can play LT, LG, or C decent but none well was a dumb Rhule move. Overpaying for Elf who was below average and couldn’t stay healthy was a dumb Rhule move. As a whole this year is making more logical sense for FAs, is that Rhule? I doubt it, but if it is then he is learning.
-
That’s the hope. Hopefully Rhule doesn’t get to trade for a vet and Fitt plus the scouts get to draft one or wait until next year. Hopefully Tepper steps in this time and let’s the right guy make the call for the long term good of the franchise…
-
The FAs we signed weren’t the traditional “Rhule” guys we signed in the last. OL that can play multiple spots, Temple/Baylor guys etc… We have targeted solid OL and gave them reasonable contacts. This time last year we were bitching about Elf and Erving. Either Rhule is learning or someone else is making these calls. One year contracts are not a bad thing. It gives us a chance to see if that player can be good in our system then we can negotiate an extension accordingly.

He is talking about decisions related to the Panthers. What he has done outside the organization isn’t really relevant to us here on the Panther’s board.

https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/2022/04/11/panthers-david-tepper-matt-rhule-draft-free-agency/ This particular NFL exec doesn’t see Tepper letting Rhule mortgage the franchise’s future to get his QB or try to fix the team in this offseason. Judging by the decent FA signings, I’d say Rhule has lost a portion of his power with roster control and hopefully it carries to the draft. Let’s hope Tepper is as smart as this NFL Exec thinks he is…..
