That was where they are ranked. Backups get drafted in the 3rd/later, starters (especially QBs) go in the first.

Next Man Up!...Are the Answers Already on the Roster?
ForJimmy replied to Michael G's topic in Carolina Panthers
I’m a bit of an optimist, but I think Wilks is going to have Henderson and Horn playing well by the end of the year. Horn was already showing he is the real deal before he got hurt, and Henderson needs a coach to light his fire and I think Wilks is the man for the job. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts Robinson at FS. I kind of want Franklin/Burris at SS and Chinn to slide up to LB with Shaq. I also think year 3 is going to be good for Brown/YGM. They regressed a little last year and hopefully they took that personally this offseason. YGM has a chance to start this year with Reddick gone. The defense can be pretty solid even without adding too many new pieces and losing Gilmore, Jackson, Reddick. On offense McAdoo saw something in Thomas and wanted to extend him. Hopefully we run some 2 TE sets to help our OL and utilize Tremble/Thomas in McAdoo’s offense. Finally I hope our new OL coach can further develop BC and get some great play out if him rather it’s LT or he slides to LG if we draft Cross at 6. -
Yeah Grier wasn’t the prospect Pickett is. Pickett is accurate with enough arm strength to make all the throws and the speed to extend plays while throwing off the run. The only negative to Pickett is his hands are .5 inches smaller than Burrow’s and he doesn’t have a Rodgers arm. His arm is still plenty good enough for the NFL and he is a first round talent. I think top 10 is a bit of an overreach but QBs get over-drafted every year. Grier aired it out in the Big 12 like every QB that plays in that conference. He had some tools but seemed to lack pocket awareness and had trouble reading defenses on the next level. He also isn’t very mobile.

They have a top defense that kept them in games without Brees. They have one of the better offensive lines with weapons in MT, Kamara. They were 9-8 with Semien (spell check) playing QB and were a constant playoff team before the QB injuries last year. Throw a talent like Watson on a constant playoff team with a top OL and you have a good shot. We are shopping every player not named Moton or Burns. That tells me we are still in the beginning of a rebuild (which is fine, but you don’t trade away a bunch of assets for the “final piece” when you gave several holes still). Say Watson adds 3/4 wins by himself. That makes them 12-5 or 13-4. We go from what 5-12 to 8-9 or 9-8. To answer your question, I doubt they trade star players (maybe MT). It would be Watson’s decision to go to a contender vs bottom tier team that would make the difference. Only team dumb enough to offer the next 2-3 drafts plus 2 star players is probably us…

That’s why it makes sense for them to trade away a ton of draft capital to acquire one. We on the other hand need a lot more… Watson maybe gets us in the playoffs and that’s because the NFC is getting weaker. Then we have limited ways to get better as his contract would be huge next year and we would have no picks.

Talking Offensive Line - Is this an improvement?

It’s the same OL, with BC having a little experience which should upgrade the LT spot, the FA should dramatically upgrade the LG, Elf and Moton are the same and Brown can’t possibly be worse that what we had at RG last year. Should be a big upgrade IMO. BC will be the biggest X Factor and give us a solid OL if he is capable. We could probably draft another OG on the 4th/5th to compete with Brown and provide a little depth. -
The Panthers have a lot of leaks coming from our staff

Drafting a QB usually gets the fan base excited too and it’s cost way less and makes perfect sense for the state of our franchise… -
Shhh. I’m trying to pretend like that’s that happening. I’m over here in denial and you are trying to ruin it for me! Watson will be a Seahawk….

It’s not like Pickett’s year was a fluke. He was on the NFL’s scouts radar before this season. Got healthy, went to Manning’s school where he got some one on one with Peyton himself and put together one of the best ACC seasons we have seen by a QB. He broke Marino’s Pitt records and Watson’s ACC records. It wasn’t just a game or two where he played great, it was the whole season (ACC championship included). Then he goes to the Senior Bowl and plays a perfect game. Then he interviews, throws, and runs well at the combine. He really isn’t a bad QB prospect at all. His hands are .5 inches shorter than Burrow/Lamar etc with a double jointed thumb that points outward. The only negative I really see is I never really saw him play under a lot of pressure. I’m sure there is tape out there on it, just the games I watch he either had a nice pocket or had quick passes (which isn’t a bad thing).

I’d be happy with Howell, but I think we can get him later. I would prefer a trade down (not likely in this draft) or if we could trade CMC for Buffalo’s first (anything else is bonus) and use it for Howell. We could walk out with Cross and Howell in the first.
-
He was about to get released. It’s basically what we did with Gilmore.

Any solid OL. If we trade CMC, I wouldn’t be against Fournette either to share the backfield with Chuba.
