  1. This is why PJ has struggled to stay in the NFL. The accuracy just isn't there. This is a very winnable game. If he keeps throwing the football like this we're going to struggle to put points on the board all day long and he'll probably start balls to the guys in black. Too bad, because he really does have a love arm.
  2. This is how I feel. I don't see a QB in this draft worth "tanking" for. INone of them jump off the screen as elite prospects. I think there are 3 or 4 who could go in the first round and be successful if the environment is right: 1) Solid HC and OC 2) Solid O-line 3) Playmakers at skill positions 4) Offense puts the QB in position to maximize his talents and minimize his weaknesses. In terms of the Panthers 1) We have no idea what to expect in 2023. We could be better or worse depending on the Tepper's decision about the HC. The team looked good yesterday. 2) Our line is solid and is getting better. We won't get a young QB killed next season unless he just holds onto the ball too long. 3) I could see Hubbard and Freeman getting the job done for the next couple of years if the run blocking holds up. We have DJ. TMJ showed flashes yesterday. Even Tommy Tremble had a TD. Still, it would be nice to have a solid #2 and pass catching threat at TE. We may have answers on the roster...maybe not. 4) All depends on who the HC hires (or retains) as OC. If we can accomplish all 4 by the start of 2023, it doesn't matter which of the top 4 or 5 we take. I think they'd be coming into a situation that would help them quickly transition into the NFL.
  3. Actually, you’re incorrect with that first statement. John Elway was drafted #1 overall in 1983. He won 2 SB’s with Denver (although he wasn’t able to do so until the last 2 years of his career 1997-1998) Eli Manning went #1 in his draft class. He was drafted by the Chargers, but he never played a down with them because he was moved to the Giants in a trade on draft day that involved Philip Rivers. So, technically he didn’t win a SB with the team that drafted him, but NY Giants were the only team he ever played for in the NFL and he won 2 Super Bowl for the franchise.
  4. I brought this up last week. Matt Stafford was drafted #1 overall by the Lions. He failed to win a playoff game in Detroit. He had to go to a stacked Rams team in order to win a Super Bowl. Stafford's biggest division rival prior to the trade was Aaron Rodgers, who was the 24th pick in his draft class. That same year Alex Smith went #1 overall. We all know who turned to be the better QB.
  5. Cam was fun to watch. I loved seeing him win MVP and still wonder what could have been had he stayed healthy. That said, we had 3 winning seasons with Cam and a fourth playoff season with a 7-8-1 record. Picking #1 or #2 doesn't mean you're getting the best QB in that years draft class, or even a good QB. Two QBs went ahead of Josh Allen in his draft class...and we have them both on our roster (Baker and Sam). Five QBs went ahead of Lamar Jackson the same years. Allen is the only one who has distinguished himself and I'm not even sure if one of them, Josh Rosen, is even still in the league. A young/rookie QB needs a good coaching a sound O-line, good skill players, and a scheme tailored to what he does best. If a rookie gets all the above, then his chances of success will be pretty good, no matter where he ends up or what spot he's selected in the draft.
  6. The great Jim Brown retired after the 1965 season after winning MVP and leading the league in rushing for the 8th time in 9 seasons. He was replaced by Leroy Kelly who put up 3 All-Pro caliber seasons from 1966-1968 before injuries began to affect him. The Browns were a title threat every year for the rest of decade with Kelly as the feature back although they never made it to the Super Bowl. You just can't replace a great RB with a scrubb. But, a good running back behind good/great offensive run blocking will usually keep the offense running smoothly (no pun intended)
  7. I said this last week. We know Baker and PJ won't be back in 2023. I wouldn't mind seeing what Sam could do with the improved O-line this season, but now with Robbie and Christian gone he probably needs to move on as well. As you pointed out, Eison could possibly develop into a viable back up/spot starter until a rookie develops. Eleven games is enough time gain experience and prove himself to coaching staff and personnel guys around the league.
  8. If Chuba could produce a couple of seasons on the ground in the NFL like he did at Oklahoma State in 2019, he probably would fill some seats at Bank of America Stadium. 28 carries, 2094 yards, 6.4 yards per carry, 21 TD's.
  9. Matt Patricia went to Detroit from the Patriots with the reputation of being a solid defensive coordinator. If a defensive coordinator gets shut out 20-0 by a PJ Walker-helmed team with Matt Stafford as his quarterback, does he really deserve a head coaching job?
  10. Good point. Unfortunately, too many QB's coming out of college and picked in the first round are not true "franchise quarterbacks". They just happen to be the best of the group coming out in a particular year. The bust rate for first round QB's is quite high. Same thing with defensive players. Some guys are solid, but are not so dominant that they make everyone around them better. Shaq Thompson, Derrick Brown, and Vernon Butler were all first round picks. Derrick is showing signs of improvement this season, but so far none of those guy have significantly elevated the play of others when they are on the field.
  11. The front office! I telling you, with the exception of picking a QB in the 1st round (always a contentious subject), I think half of the people on this board would do a better job using those picks to fill in the roster for 2023. We'd take the best player at a position of need on the board when we're on the clock. We wouldn't "trade back for value" and leave a starting prospect on the board for a lower rated player or select a players in later rounds just for the sake of having extra picks.
  12. I had forgot about those two. Thanks guys. Those were both Gettleman selections I believe. He took over in 2013 I think. That's 5 good players players between 2013-2021 in the 2nd and 3rd rounds(jury is still out on 2022 class). Did we miss anyone else? I don't think so.
  13. Have we changed the GM or scouting department? From what we have seen (so far) it appears we'll have the same FO people next year. If Fitts gets full control that new coach will be working for him and "may" have little to say in who gets selected. As I stated earlier if we get an HC/GM coach that click together, this could actually work. But if they clash, of Fitts feels like he needs total control to keep his job and downplays the HC's input, things could go turn sour in a hurry.
  14. How many of them have picked? I've posted this twice but received no reply. Outside of James Bradberry (2016 and no longer with the team), Jeremy Chinn (2020), Brady Christensen (2021), How many of our 2nd and 3rd round picks have actually become above average and made a significant impact on the team since the SB season of 2015?
  15. I wonder what type of numbers Eckler would average per game (and how many games the team would win overall) if he played behind that atrocious line Carolina had last year with a wounded Cam, Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold, or Baker Mayfield running Joe Brady and Bob McAdoo offense schemes instead of Justin Herbert.
  16. The above statement is true. But the crowd that wanted him moved repeatedly say "We weren't winning with him", like our effort to feed him the ball is the reason we lost these games. One poster even posted the win totals for the past 3 games for our wins with Christian 5,5,1. How many games did we win without him? How many of those wins would have been losses if he hadn't played? But, as soon as we get 3 top tier starters/playmakers in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th with those extra picks in 2023 ;and another one in the 5th round in 2024; we will be well on our way to dominating the NFC...sarcasm intended.
  17. At some point we need to acknowledge our poor QB play is the main reason for those losses. Kyle Allen, 6-7 won loss record, has more QB wins than anyone in Carolina since the 2018 season. That's more than Cam, Teddy, Sam, and Baker who were all 1st round picks! Why do all of the pro-trade people focus on the record with Christian on the field but they never say a word about the mediocre QB play in Carolina since the 2017 season? If we don't get a good QB in 2023, the record won't be any better with those extra picks.
  18. I don't know if you're being serious or sarcastic . I will say that I do believe a lot of us on at the Huddle could do a better job with those picks than the guys in the FO. None of us would have ever drafted Vernon Butler in the 1st round. We wouldn't have drafted Derrick Brown as the 6th overall in 2020. We wouldn't have traded down from a mid 30's pick to 58 and pass on 5 offensive tackles, 2 starting guards, and a center in Creed Humphrey an center who'll likely be a Pro Bowler/All-Pro for the rest of the decade to draft TMJ, a WR that never impacts the play on the field. We wouldn't have traded a 3rd round pick for CJ Henderson or a 2nd round pick for Sam Darnold. Yet, all of the above (and plenty of other misses in rounds 3-7) have happened since 2016 due to decisions in the front office, which doesn't appear likely to change this off-season. Why should we think we're going to strike gold with 3 extra 49er draft picks in 2023 (pun intended)?
  19. But he's played well and hasn't missed a game this season. He is literally the only player on offense who has had a positive impact on the team other than Shenault for two plays in the New Orleans game. I can't imagine how bad this team is going be on offense for the rest of the year. We are clearly tanking for the the first round pick. When franchises do things like this it doesn't seem to go as planned. I have no faith in an organization that has handled our player personnel and drafts so poorly the past 3 years. No team that has traded 1 RB should be hapless/inept on offense. Yet, we just lost 80% of our offensive production. And, we're suppose to think the people who built this roster are going to rebuild this team with solid draft choices at the end or middle of rounds 2-4. Have you guys actually studie/analyzed the results of the players we tend to get in these rounds? I'll believe it when I see it. If we get a great offensive minded HC who is perfectly in sync with our GM (whoever that may be in 2023), then this could work. But, if our draft class follows the trend of our past 10 years or so we'll going to wind up with 3 or 4 Jags who could never start on another contending team in the NFL and continue or history of "sustained mediocrity."
  20. Since we drafted Christian, he only had one season in which he played with a healthy and top end QB (2017). After Cam's injury things have never been good the Carolinas in terms of QB. Someone had a post on here this week about QB records here the past few years. The guy at the top of the list was Kyle Allen with a 6-7 record. The is almost unbelievable when you actually brake time to think about it. Yet, Christian seems to be the one is the scapegoat because we didn't win with him. We've been bad since 2018 because of bad QB, not because of an overly expensive RB contract.
  21. The Austin Eckeler comparison isnt quite fair. This is a QB driven league and Eckler plays with one of the best young QBs in the game, Justin Herbert. He has one of the strongest arms in the league and has nos trouble pushing the ball down field. San Diego also has better receivers than we do. Teams play the Chargers and go in with the mindset we have to stop Herbert; Eckeler is the leaser concern which opens things up for him. Since Cam's injuries we haven't had a real threat at the QB position. Every team realizes our QBs are not a threat so they can focus on McCaffrey. If Cmac we're healthy and on that Charger team his numbers would be equal to or better than Ecklers.
  22. "If" is the operative word. Outside of Cam Newton, and possibly Kerry Collins, has this team ever drafted a viable NFL starter? This QB class isn't stellar. I don't see a sure thing in the class of 2023. And, even if we happen to get a decent prospect the kid is going to struggle early. We don't have a legit #1/#2 on this squad who could start on another team other than DJ Moore. No passing threat at TE. RB looks iffy. Are we expecting a rookie QB to come here and carry the team with only 1 playmaker. Some are going to say "we have extra draft picks now". True but what are going to do with them? Since 1995 e have drafted 2 great wideouts, (Moose and Smitty); no difference makers at TE (Wesley Walls and Greg Olsen) came here as veterans. 3 good RB's (D.Williams, J. Stewart, C.McCaffrey). Things can change, but I just don't think the draft haul is going to live up to expectations. I have little faith in the decision making of the front office.
  23. Outside of Jeremy Chinn (2020 round 2) and Brady Christensen (2021 round 3), tell me a what players currently on our roster chosen in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, have given us a "good value" in terms of a significant impact on the playing field since we drafted James Bradberry in round 2 of the 2016 draft. On paper the extra picks sound good, but I just don't see us nailing each pick in 2023. If we end up with 3 or 4 JAGs then this trade will be a massive failure outside if clearing cap space. And, what good is cap space if the players you pick don't make the team significantly better?
