The contract was only a small part of what I was saying. What I was saying is he even offered that long of a contract is because from the start they knew they were starting a rebuild that would probably take more than 2 seasons to see the end result. If they are really bad this year and draft a qb early and they appear awful the season after that then I could see his seat getting really hot, but right now they haven't even found a qb they are fully behind that they dont think is a project. Hopefully Sam becomes that but by the investment it seems like they are taking him as a gamble. Hopefully it pays off.

Rhule wont be fired after his second season. I would pretty much bet on it. He inherited the start of a rebuild. Tepper seems impatient sometimes but he has mentioned the rebuild multiple times, the same as Rhule has. While Tepper really doesn't worry about money much most likely he didnt give Rhule such a long contract planning on firing after his second season of a rebuild.

To be fair besides maybe the quarterback part, you really shouldnt know the answers for the first couple seasons. If its instantaneous success then it could be carryover from the previous regime. Our franchise has changed literally as much as it could the past couple seasons and as far as I'm concerned it's still not finished with the complete rebuild that they started but so far things look promising to me.

Your reaction when Sam Darnold is not named a Captain...
Tr3ach replied to Basbear's topic in Carolina Panthers
To be fair Cam did get called out for some stuff early on if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure I remember Thomas Davis telling a story about jumping on him to go to the weight room with the rest of the players and some stuff like that. -
The people complaining about the captains are the same ones agreeing that Sam wouldn't be one in the other thread, so it checks out.

Sam is one for all the people saying he wouldnt be. The list of captains announced Thursday includes: Linebacker Shaq Thompson, running back Christian McCaffrey, cornerback Donte Jackson, defensive end Brian Burns, quarterback Sam Darnold, center Matt Paradis, right tackle Taylor Moton, and long snapper J.J. Jansen.

Welp, this didnt age well. Sam is a captain. -
You act like for years we didnt have a huge amount of fans that were bigger Cam fans than Panther fans.

The deep ball is definitely a cog. It is very overrated by some people. There are plenty of short and intermediate routes that definitely arent check downs. I would say the saints offense thrives off of intermediate routes much more than any deep balls.
-
For the most part I would say our offense isnt built on taking that many down the field shots. Its built on timing and getting the ball in the playmakers hands with some separation. Its much more based on yac than deep balls.

ESPN Analytics' simulation. You're not gonna like it...maybe
Tr3ach replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
That's what I was thinking. They dont have similar skillsets at all. I have thought for a year or two that Howell reminds me exactly of young drew brees, even the negatives. -
Maybe there is an "elephant" in the room or maybe the former patriots player who has been around the locker room knows more than we do about what is going on in the locker room in NE. Which is a much more complicated offense than we ran. This is why everything with Cam is so divisive. You can see negatives in a player without there having to be an "elephant" in the room. Do those "elephants" exist? Of course they do, but you can say negative things about a player or you could think it wasnt the best move to give Cam a giant contract in the shape he was in a couple years ago and not be an "f150".

While I do agree with this common thought in some ways, the main thing Rivera did is not protect Cam from himself. Cam always had a physical battering ram style that from his rookie year caused people to be worried about his career longevity. Honestly that is the main thing that made Cam so special. The problem is all of his major strengths (giant arm, not crazy fast but pretty fast for a qb but very big) were the ones that fade the fastest and his weaknesses (timing, touch, sometimes accuracy) were what you have to live on later in your career. I think it was evident from his first season on that there was a chance that he wasn't going to be potentially great for long.

I wonder how much more of an affect there is to home field advantage early in the season. So much bigger crowds and noise compared to what they are used to. With all the restrictions last year this is a lot of the players first times experiencing a crowd like this.

I'm not sure how much of any of this is on Howell so far...

Sean Ryan on key Darnold improvement (P-Wire's Rizzuti) & my $0.02
Tr3ach replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
Maybe not but I wouldnt say its impossible. I feel like decision making is a trait that's a lot different than the others you mentioned. I feel like decision making can be helped by scheme and even just the way the quarterback makes their roads. Starting by simplifying the decisions you're asking the qb to make and building from there. -

Some qbs definitely improve at the pro level. -
I would take that every off season.
-
Exactly, I understand the worry about the idea of a qb controversy but Rhule could have stomped that out pretty quick by firmly stating that Darnold is the qb. Minshew would have been a much better option over PJ or Grier.
-
If Darnold turns out to be a good young qb then it was great value. You cant tell value immediately.
-
It's crazy they got him for a conditional 6th. He would have been a good backup option.
-
Yea in the first clip Brown is 4 yards closer to the LoS than the next closest olineman by the end of the 3 second clip.
-
The sad part of that clip is the rest of the oline collapsed so much they weren't even in the frame anymore.
-
Good feels, but we see the elephant in the room
Tr3ach replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yea I was expecting a lot more of the trouble to come from the edge, not straight up the middle in Darnold's face. -
All the people saying he just needs more practice, I'm not sure. I feel like he regressed over the 3 games with the third being way more cringey and awkward. Maybe he can though. I'm just not so sure this "tell it like it is" style is as great as some seem to. I'm all for being honest about the play that is ran but sometimes his takes were just wrong and he would just continue with making things personal.
